Expected Derby 25 field as 20 horses on target for £1.5 million Epsom Classic
Aidan O'Brien trains four of the candidates for the Betfred-sponsored race, which has also attracted 2,000 Guineas winner Ruling Court, including big race favourite Delacroix There could be a maximum field for the £1.5 million Betfred Derby after 20 horses were confirmed on Monday. Ante-post favourite Delacroix was the headline colt among the 20 names on track for the famous Classic to be run at Epsom on Saturday. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Delacroix propelled himself to the head of the Classic betting with conclusive victories in two spring Derby trials, adding to his narrow defeat in last year's Futurity Trophy at Doncaster. He is one of four contenders from Ballydoyle, with The Lion In Winter another key name despite his odds-on defeat in the Dante, while Lambourn and Puppet Master won trials at Chester and Lingfield respectively. The Charlie Appleby-trained Ruling Court bids to add another Classic to his CV, with the 2,000 Guineas winner one of two for Godolphin along with the Newmarket fourth Tornado Alert for Saeed bin Suroor. Dante winner Pride Of Arras is one of two possibles for Ralph Beckett who could also run Stanhope Gardens while John and Thady Gosden have confirmed both York second Damysus and the Juddmonte-owned fifth Nightwalker. Juddmonte have added a second string to their bow though, as French raider New Ground has been supplemented at a cost of £75,000 after finishing third in each of his two starts for trainer Henri-Francois Devin this season. The son of New Bay was beaten just a length by French Derby runner-up Cualificar in April and Juddmonte's European racing manager Barry Mahon is confident he will thrive for stepping up in trip. The Francis Graffard-trained Midak has also been added to the race and he will carry the colours of the Aga Khan Studs, with the race run in honour of the Aga Khan IV, who died in February. Charlie Johnston could be double-handed via Lazy Griff and Green Storm, with Al Wasl Storm, Nightime Dancer, Rogue Impact, Sea Scout, Tennessee Stud and Tuscan Hills round out the potential field. Shoemark was much maligned for no reason, but showed his class as a man and jockey when eventually grabbing his Group 1 thanks to Friendly Soul, who proved just that, in the Prix de l'Opera on Arc weekend. This term, Shoemark and the Gosdens have been in cracking form, banging in the Nell Gwyn with Zanzoun, the Craven with Field of Gold and the Queen Anne trial at Ascot on Wednesday thanks to Sardinian Warrior. After the Craven, I was convinced Field Of Gold would be a short price for the Guineas, but he was still 6-1. It was hard to understand, as the giant grey was useful as a juvenile and had just powered to a clear success. Maybe people just don't like the Craven anymore. After all, Haafhd was the last horse to do the Guineas double way back in 2004. Incidentally, you have to go back to 1991 and Mystiko the last grey to bang in a Guineas. Today, Field of Gold a strong favourite and will surely take all the beating for Juddmonte. I hope he absolutely romps home. Field of Gold is likely to be held up, but if there is a flaw in him that could be it, as it's hard to see a confirmed front-runner in the line-up. The obvious candidate is Tornado Alert, who is owned by Godolphin, a team which has better fancied runners in Ruling Court, chosen by William Buick, and champion two-year-old Shadow Of Light in a first-time tongue strap. Shadow of Light banged in the Middle Mark (6f) and the Dewhurst (7f) last term but stamina for this mile is open to question. Of the others, Expanded needs to improve for Ballydoyle to give Aidan O'Brien a 11th 2,000 Guineas while Jessie Harrington's Green Impact is a relative unknown. I love Lake Victoria, and she was outrageously good in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf at Del Mar. But something has to give and, for me, Desert Flower could yet be one of the best 1,000 Guineas winners for a long time. There's a bit of Oh So Sharp about Desert Flower, who powered clear in the 2024 Group 1 Fillies' Mile. In every one of here starts she's got better and better and her stamina might be the key asset in the closing stages. Let's hope she's ready to bloom after a week of sunshine.
