KZN rivals clash at familiar turf as Arrows and Bay hunt first win

Both sides lost their league openers, leaving them already under pressure to put early points on the board. Arrows were beaten by newly promoted Siwelele FC, while Richards Bay fell to Marumo Gallants. The urgency is shared — neither camp wants to risk an extended winless run this early in the season. For Arrows, the 2025/26 has begun as a season of transition. Head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has assembled a squad brimming with fresh-faced youngsters signed in the off-season. While the energy and enthusiasm are clear, the chemistry is still developing, particularly in attack where their youthful frontline has yet to click. Richards Bay's start has been more bruising. Co-coaches Ronnie Gabriel and Papi Zothwane have overseen back-to-back league defeats, with the 4-0 loss to champions Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago leaving wounds that still need healing.

'Difficult for Kaizer Chiefs to focus because of Nedbank Cup final'
Kaizer Chiefs defender Dillan Solomons admitted that the Nedbank Cup final has been on the minds of many Amakhosi players. The Glamour Boys reached the final by beating favourites Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 earlier this month. Having gone 10 years without silverware, Chiefs have a chance to change that, but it won't be easy as they face their archrivals Orlando Pirates, in the final. 'It's difficult [to fully focus on other games before the Nedbank final], obviously, you're naturally focused on the final. Any human being would be excited for that moment, but it's just how you prepare mentally for every game,' Solomons said. 'The way I see it, we can use those games [against Gallants and Pirates in the league] as a momentum builder going into the final. It's not easy games obviously; Marumo are not an easy team, people always think they're an easy team, but they are not an easy team. And then we've got the league derby before the big one, it's a game we need to go out there and show confidence if you want to go to the final and win it.' Solomons said Kaizer Chiefs have to forget about the Nedbank Cup final and focus on their next Betway Premeirship. People expected us to be better than last season and it didn't happen. As players, we have to take responsibility and we have to say that inconsistency is on us. We can't blame other people. We have to show that we can do it in these last few games, show people what we are about,' he said.
