Bexley schools to transport back in time with themed decade outfits to mark 60 years
Two schools in Bexley are preparing to celebrate 60 years of being open with a community-wide celebration of music, memories and decades of education. Set to take place on Friday, June 20 from 2.30pm, the event will see pupils from Joydens Wood Infant and Junior Schools, from Reception to Year 6, transported back in time through themed outfits and performances representing each decade since the schools opened in the 1960s. Deputy Head Mrs Emma Blake, who has been part of the Joydens Wood community for the past eight years, said the celebration would be a vibrant showcase of everything the schools stand for - creativity, togetherness, and joy. She told the News Shopper: 'The children will each be given a decade and dress in clothes inspired by that era. 'The staff are going to arrange activities linked to their decade. 'Then everyone will gather on the field for the main celebration.' The event will take place on June 20 (Image: Joydens Wood Infant and Junior Schools) The schools - located on Park Way in Bexley - pride themselves on offering more than just academics. The infant school, with its vision of being 'a happy and safe place to learn and grow,' fosters a purposeful environment where every child is supported to thrive. Its close-knit relationship with families and the wider community is mirrored by the junior school's focus on fun, challenge, and high expectations, helping children become confident, independent learners. To reflect the inclusive and festive nature of the event, families will be invited to collect their children an hour early and join them on the school field. Parents are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, with activities, decorations and performances awaiting them. Mrs Blake added: 'We're going to decorate the field with bunting. 'The children are making decorations themselves, and our head teacher will give a speech. 'Each class will perform a song from their decade.' The schools have invited the Mayor of Dartford and the local MP, who will help call a raffle during the event. There are also plans for a specially made cake, thanks to the catering team, which will be included in the raffle draw. The celebrations will bring together past and present, staff and students, families and local leaders - a fitting tribute to six decades of learning, laughter and growth in the heart of Bexley.

McClure's ton leads Bexley to victory over St Lawrence
Ken McClure scored his first Kent League Premier Division century to help Bexley beat St Lawrence and Highland Court at home. Having won the toss, the visitors may have had the weather in mind when they asked Bexley to bat first. Although the hosts were missing a potential three of their first four in the batting order, they made light of the absentees. Ellis Daly went early but overseas professional McClure joined Calum Basey and they took the score on to 71 before Basey fell four short of his half century in the seventeenth over. Accurate bowling by former Kent all-rounder Darren Stevens, Thomas Copestake and John Grewar then strangled Bexley's middle order and at 124 for 4 from from 37 overs, they had work to do. However, McClure was still there and was joined by George Haley and they scored 74 from the next ten overs before the latter fell for 35 from 32 balls. McClure went on to complete his hundred before falling for 101 in the penultimate over. Twelve runs off the final over took the Bexley score to 236 for 7. Grewar ended with figures of 3 for 26 and Siddarthsinh Parmar 2 for 59. It was then the turn of Harry Dowling and Fraser McWhinnie to put pressure on the St Lawrence top order. The former bowled a superb tight spell forcing the openers to take risks against the latter and the club's leading wicket taker this season claimed the scalps of Dan Stickels, Shineyu Anand and Will Hilton. After Syan Bulathinsatha had struggled initially, he started to look dangerous only to be run out by a Matt Stiddard direct hit for 29. Stevens was stumped brilliantly down the leg-side by Ben Aldred off the bowling of Oliver Smith before Ellis Daly wrapped up the lower order, leaving Grewar stranded on 25 not out. McWhinnie ended with 3 for 27 and Daly 3 for 23. Although Dowling finished wicket-less, his seven overs only yielded nine runs as the visitors were bowled out for 123, 113 runs shy of their target. Victory took Bexley up to third place in the early season table, one point behind Tunbridge Wells, and twelve behind Hayes, the only team to have won all three of their league matches so far.

Are fireworks allowed in Columbus, central Ohio for Memorial Day? What to know
While you may be gearing up to celebrate Memorial Day, think twice before setting off any fireworks in certain areas in central Ohio. Since 2022, Ohio law has allowed residents to detonate consumer-grade fireworks only on certain holidays at specific times. However, the law also allows local municipalities to ban fireworks launches. In other words, just because they're legal statewide doesn't mean it's legal where you live. Fireworks are allowed on the following holidays unless your specific community bans them. Memorial Day weekend from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Juneteenth from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 3, 4, and 5, and the weekends immediately before and after from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Labor Day weekend from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Diwali from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. New Year's Eve from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. New Year's Day from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Chinese New Year from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Cinco de Mayo from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Obetz residents can launch them on the same days as the state law provides, but on New Year's Day they can only be fired until 12:30 a.m. Residents of Powell can launch fireworks on the days the state law listed, but they can't buy them in the city. Reynoldsburg only allows fireworks on the 4th of July from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Upper Arlington fireworks can only be launched with a written permit from the fire chief. Fireworks are banned in these municipalities unless you're looking to be fined and hit with a criminal charge. Licensed fireworks exhibitors can still put on shows if they get approval from local authorities.
