First flood warning in force in Bhadrachalam; Godavari inching close to second flood warning level at the temple town in Telangana

A flood alert has been sounded for people living in the riverside villages in Bhadrachalam Agency as the swollen Godavari river rose to 47 feet, just one feet below the second flood warning level at Telangana's temple town of Bhadrachalam late on Wednesday evening. The first flood warning was issued by Bhadradri Kothagudem collector Jitesh V. Patil at 8.15 a.m. on Wednesday after the river touched 43 feet mark. The water level in the river hovered around 47 feet and the flood discharge in the river crossed 10.98 lakh cusecs at 7 p.m. Several streams were in spate in Dummugudem and Charla mandals in Bhadrachalam division following heavy rainfall over the past few days. Swollen streams flooded causeways and low-lying stretches of various roads in Bhadrachalam Agency snapping road link to a couple of remote villages along the Bhadradri Kothagudem-Mulugu inter-district border. A flood control room has been set up at the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) headquarters in Bhadrachalam to constantly monitor the situation in the riverside villages and flood prone areas in Bhadrachalam Agency. The control room can be reached at 7995268352. Another control room (08743-232444 and 7981219425) has been activated at the sub-collector's office in Bhadrachalam to tackle any potential flood event. According to official sources, flood duty officers have been positioned in Bhadrachalam division as per the flood contingency plan. The water level in the Godavari at Kaleshwaram in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district inched closer to the danger level of 13.460 metres after crossing the warning level of 12.210 metres. The water level is expected to rise further due to heavy inflows from the projects in the upstream. The bathing ghats near Triveni Sangamam, the confluence-point of the Godavari, the Pranahitha and the subterranean Saraswati rivers, were partially submerged by floodwaters in Kaleshwaram, sources added. At the Lakshmi (Medigadda) barrage, both the inflow and outflow were recorded at 9.02 lakh cusecs as all the 85 crest gates of the barrage were kept open in free flow condition on Wednesday. All the upstream projects on the Godavari, including the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP), Kaddam Narayan Reddy and Sripada Yellampally, continued to receive heavy inflows from the catchment areas of the Godavari and its tributaries in Maharashtra.
