Independence Day celebrated with great fervour in Hubballi Dharwad
The 79th Independence Day celebrations saw enthusiastic participation from people from all walks of life in the twin cities of Hubballi Dharwad on Friday.
In the morning the tricolour was hoisted at various government office premises, banks, schools and colleges, and other venues, including residential localities and commercial establishments. Various cultural programmes were held in the evening as part of the celebrations.
The tricolour was seen fluttering atop various offices and houses and in balconies of residential complexes across the twin cities. People, especially youngsters, were seen taking selfies holding the tricolour and going around the city on their two wheelers, waving the national flag in both Hubballi and Dharwad. Several four-wheelers and autorickshaws too had flags mounted on them, and most of the junctions were draped in the tricolour.
At the controversial Idgah Maidan, Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali hoisted the national flag with MLA Mahesh Tenginakai and several senior councillors in the presence. As Independence Day coincides with the birth anniversary of Sangolli Rayanna, a strongman of Kittur queen Rani Chennamma who fought against the British, several leaders and organisations lined up before the statue near Idgah Maidan in Hubballi to pay floral tributes.
In the taluk level Independence Day celebrations held at Nehru Maidan in Hubballi, Tahsildar Mahesh Gasti hoisted the tricolour in the presence of MLAs Mahesh Tenginakai, MLC Pradeep Shettar, and others. The dignitaries called on the people to understand the significance of freedom and actively contribute towards nation-building. Students from various schools enthralled the audience with lively cultural programmes and skits on the occasion.
'Tiranga Yatra'
Processions by various organisations were also held as part of the celebrations. In the event organised by Uday Bharat Yuvak Mandal, Hirepet Sri Ganesh Utsav Mandali and other organisations MLA Mahesh Tenginakai flagged off the 'Tiranga Yatra' at Moorusavir Mutt premises.
A 2000 ft. long and 10 ft. wide tricolour was carried in a procession by students of schools and colleges and members of various organisations on the thoroughfares of the city. Chandrashekhar Gokak and others coordinated the event.
In another event, a motorcycle rally organised by Bhagat Singh Seva Sangha was again flagged off by MLA Mahesh Tenginakai and Managing Director of Swarnaa Group V.S.V Prasad, who both subsequently took part in it.
As part of the Independence day celebrations, several commercial establishments, hotels and restaurants were illuminated in the tricolour and special independence day offers were also extended to the customers.
