Leadership in 6G key to securing India's technological sovereignty: Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani
NEW DELHI: Minister of State (MoS) for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani on Monday reviewed the ongoing initiatives under the Bharat 6G Mission , with a focus on government-funded research, progress in global standard-setting, and challenges affecting the ecosystem. 'Chaired a review meeting on Bharat 6G Mission to ensure that our efforts are truly outcome-oriented,' Pemmasani tweeted on the social media platform X. 'Discussed India's role in global 6G standard-setting, progress of over 100 funded R&D proposals, and examined how far we've moved towards our objectives. Also sought to understand the challenges faced by innovators and the ecosystem,' he added. Pemmasani said the government of India is committed to making India a global hub for the next generation of telecom innovation , adding that leadership in the 6G technology will be vital to securing 'our technological sovereignty and digital prosperity'. The minister and the stakeholders discussed the significance of the sixth-generation (6G) technology for India, which is expected to provide intelligent, secure and ultra-reliable applications in remote healthcare, smart agriculture, precision manufacturing and other verticals. 6G will also enable more innovative applications, including real-time sensing, AI-driven networks , and terabit-category speeds. The sixth-generation networks are expected to be commercialised from 2030, with multinational gear makers Nokia, Ericsson, and others, already working on relevant research and development (R&D) activities. India aims to be among the countries shaping 6G networks. The Bharat 6G Vision, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 23, 2023, has envisaged an ambitious path for India to design, develop, and deploy 6G technologies by 2030. The document has envisioned that India will have 10% of global IPRs in 6G, development of indigenous products, and deployment of affordable solutions. Notably, the Bharat 6G Alliance, a collaborative platform of the industry, academia, startups, and others, has global partnerships with Japan, Singapore, and Finland in 6G. Besides, India is actively working on terahertz communication and AI-native networks. During the meeting, Pemmasani reviewed R&D proposals funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) through the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) and other mechanisms. The funds were released in this fiscal year, but the minister stressed on evaluating the actual progress, an industry executive told ETTelecom. Pemmasani directed that routine detailed reviews be conducted of the top funded projects, and suggested that regular interactions be held with beneficiaries to assess achievements and obstacles. The meeting also examined India's participation in global standard-setting bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

India among top six patent-filing nations in 6G technology: MoS Pemmasani
India is among the top six countries in terms of filing patents for 6G technologies, Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said at the Bharat 6G International Conference on Thursday (May 15, 2025). Dr. Pemmasani's remarks come as the Indian government seeks to pull ahead in developing standards for the next generation of telecom technology, after a rapid deployment of 5G base stations by telecom operators in India over the last couple years. '6G will enable speeds in terabits per second,' Dr. Pemmasani said, adding that the technology enables 'sub-millisecond latency, intelligent self-healing networks, and volumetric connectivity — from underwater to aerospace.' 'Bharat's 6G Vision aims to position India as a global 6G leader by 2030 through the Bharat 6G Alliance, 111+ funded research projects worth over ₹300 crore, global partnerships with Japan, Singapore, and Finland, and breakthroughs in terahertz communication and AI-native networks,' Dr. Pemmasani said.

Bharat 6G a national mission: Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani to industry
NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani on Wednesday urged stakeholders to view ' Bharat 6G ' as a national mission, and stressed that India aims to resolutely lead the development of sixth-generation (6G) technologies. At an industry event, Pemmasani highlighted the country's transformation from a technology adopter to a standard-setter and urged all stakeholders to treat Bharat 6G not merely as a technical pursuit but as a national mission, the Central government said in an official statement. He termed 6G as a transformative opportunity that can redefine connectivity for the future generations, and outlined its potential to revolutionise sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and smart cities. Pemmasani said the Bharat 6G Vision document has envisioned an ambitious path for India to design, develop, and deploy 6G technologies by 2030. He stated that Bharat's 6G Vision aims to position India as a global 6G leader by 2030 through the Bharat 6G Alliance , over 111 funded research projects, global partnerships with Japan, Singapore, and Finland, and breakthroughs in terahertz communication and AI-native networks, as per the statement. Bharat 6G Vision is based on principles of affordability, sustainability and ubiquity. The Department of Telecommunications has facilitated the setting up of 'Bharat 6G Alliance', an industry grouping of domestic industry, academia, national research institutions and standards organisations to develop an action plan as outlined in the document. '6G presents not merely an incremental improvement, but a fundamental transformation… enabling terahertz frequency bands, 1 terabit per second speeds, sub-millisecond latency, intelligent self-healing networks, and volumetric connectivity — from underwater to aerospace,' Pemmasani said, as per the statement. He noted that India's approach is to develop technology, shape global standards, and lead digital transformation for the benefit of humanity. He added that India has the 'necessary scale, innovation capacity, and political will to lead the global 6G journey'.
