AUT wants unified admission panel for self-financing and aided streams in colleges in T.N.
The Association of University Teachers has appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to ensure a single admission committee for self-financing and aided streams in aided colleges across the State. The members want the government to make sure that aided stream students in colleges are levied only the government-prescribed fees during admission. The association appealed to the government to constitute an admission committee for the year 2025-26 by co-opting Scheduled Caste (SC) members in it. The council has resolved to implement the Prohibition of Capitation Fee (Educational Institutions) Act 1992 to prevent managements of aided colleges from fleecing students from lower socioeconomic background. The members wanted the government to appoint a bureaucrat as the registrar of Periyar University, Salem, to streamline the administrative irregularities found in the varsity in the last four years. The council has also proposed to appeal to the government to constitute an inquiry into the nomination of the head of Tamil department as the in-charge Vice-Chancellor by the then V-C R. Jaganathan, and the omissions and commissions by the in-charge V-C. An impartial inquiry into excess fee collection in the name of condonation fee for Tiruvalluvar University during 2024-25 must be constituted, the members said. They have also sought the implementation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations, 2023, by universities that call for nomination of only senior-most faculties to the academic council/governing board of autonomous colleges. K. Raja, general secretary of the AUT, said the Higher Education department should initiate immediate steps to release the long-pending salary since April 2024 due to teachers and staffers of erstwhile constituent colleges of Bharathidasan University and withdraw the case filed at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. The council also resolved to urge Bharathidasan University to absorb the 34 regular teachers against existing vacancy in university departments in consonance with the resolution passed by the syndicate in November 2019. The AUT resolved that the Higher Education department should intervene and impress upon the interim administrator to conduct the elections to the Pachiayappa's Trust Board to enable the constitutions of the college committees at the earliest. On Sunday (May 25, 2025), the AUT elected new office-bearers. R. Saravanan, K. Raja, and K. Syed Ahamed Kabeer were sworn in as president, general secretary, and treasurer, respectively, for the period 2025-2027.

Institutions in Tiruchi rely on software tools to detect, prevent plagiarism in academic work
Educational institutions in Tiruchi are increasingly relying on software tools to curb plagiarism and eoncourage academic integrity among faculty and students. 'Anti-plagiarism software has gained importance in the past few years because international universities, journal publishers, as well as leading government agencies in India require all research submissions to have passed through their detection tests first. Though the fees for the commercial software is high, institutions have to integrate it into their system in order to maintain the quality of their academic work,' S. Srinivasaragavan, senior professor and founder head, Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University (BDU), told The Hindu. BDU receives close to 1,000 document submissions for verification through software tools in an academic year. 'Image recognition and mathematical formulae, which are public domain information, can be problematic when they are put through plagiarism detectors, but there are ways to work around these issues. The biggest advantage of software tools is that they allow scholars to avoid repetition of research topics. Faculty and students can improve their writing skills through revisions,' said R. Balasubramani, coordinator, BDU Research Ethics and Plagiarism and professor, Department of Library and Information Science. 'Before the software tools were introduced, it was not possible to check 'copy-paste' material in research papers easily. People could hack into submissions from other universities and pass off copied text as their own. Now, under the rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), text with less than 10% similarity (with the original or cited material) alone will be approved. Once checked by the software, the librarian certifies the final document. So students and faculty members have to be careful about originality,' said R. Parameswaran, librarian, Chozha Central Library at the Central University of Tamil Nadu in Tiruvarur. At Bishop Heber College, up to 4,000 documents were vetted by software this year. 'The process has been opened up to include undergraduate and postgraduate projects, besides Ph.D and faculty articles. We will be incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) tools next year, to detect and restrict the use of text generated through ChatGPT,' said college librarian J. Gnana Prasad.

'To fulfil the ever-growing demands of higher education from diverse sections of the society and also to fulfil the aspirations of the youth, especially in the delta region, from disadvantaged background to enter higher education institutions and also to increase the gross enrolment ratio in the said region, the establishment of Kalaignar University is essentially required,' the bill explained. Make CM chancellor of all state varsities: Teachers' association CHENNAI: The Association of University Teachers (AUT) on Monday urged the state government to bring further amendments to the State Universities Act to make chief minister the chancellor of state universities. In a memorandum to the higher education minister, the association said the recent amendments to the Acts governing 10 state universities, facilitating the appointment of vice-chancellors by the state government, were appreciable. However, further changes were necessary to remove the governor's role as chancellor in 19 of the 21 universities. The AUT said the move will ensure autonomy of universities and strengthen the federal structure of governance. 'If the governor continues to have powers to interfere in the affairs of state universities, it will affect their functioning. The state government should bring further amendments to take complete control of the universities,' said AUT president MS Bala Murugan.

Students upset as Bharathidasan University delays revaluation results
TIRUCHY: Students from colleges affiliated with Bharathidasan University are upset as results of revaluation for the December semester, have not been released yet for the past two months Many students who were not happy with their score or failed had applied for revaluation in February, paying revaluation charges of Rs 750 per paper and Rs 400 for a copy of the evaluated answer scripts. Shamsher Ahmed, state president of the Students Federation of India said around 1,000 students had applied for revaluation. Sources in the University said they received around 800 revaluation requests. With the results not announced yet, students say they will have to sit for the arrear exam by paying Rs 75 per paper. "I might be writing an exam I've already passed, but I won't know it until the revaluation results are released," said Rahul (name changed) a student. Another student, Abbas (name changed), said the university officials had assured them that the best of the two scores would be considered once both results are available. A senior university official, speaking on condition of anonymity, attributed the delay to logistical challenges. "The revaluation process involves sorting of generally over 2,000 answer scripts by subject codes and assigning them to available evaluators. Delays occur due to faculty unavailability. Each script is stored carefully and reviewed thoroughly," said the official. The revaluation process should have been completed within three weeks to a month, "We are working to speed up the process and results will be announced in the coming days" another official added. Despite several attempts, Jeya Prakash, controller of examinations ( incharge) was not available for comment. The SFI has pasted posters around the BDU campus condemning the delay and warning of protests if results are not declared at the earliest.
