Neighbour assaults elderly woman, held

T'puram: A 78-year-old retired teacher, Sarasamma, was grievously injured after being brutally beaten by her 70-year-old neighbour at Kottarakara in Kollam on Monday. Kottarakara police arrested the accused, Sasidharan, in connection with the incident. According to police, the shocking assault occurred around 2.15pm when Sasidharan barged into her home and assaulted her. He first grabbed a stick she attempted to defend herself with, then dragged and thrashed her mercilessly. Police were alerted by other neighbours and Sasidharan was taken into custody soon. The authorities confirmed that a longstanding dispute between the two neighbours over property is believed to have triggered the violent incident. Residents say clashes between them were frequent, but this was by far the most severe episode. Sarasamma was admitted to a nearby hospital with multiple injuries. Medical staff reported that her condition is stable and that she is under close observation. Further details about the exact nature of her injuries have not been disclosed.
