Committee favours cancellation of kidney transplant licences of two hospitals

The committee formed to inquire into the illegal kidney sale racket, involving the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur and Cethar Hospital in Tiruchi, has recommended that the kidney transplant licences of these hospitals be cancelled and action initiated against brokers Anandan and Stanley Mohan under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha. A detailed report submitted to the authorisation committee by S. Vineeth, Project Director, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, said the inquiry found that the documents submitted to the committee were prepared to facilitate illegal kidney transplant with the consent of the hospitals. Some of the documents were fraudulently prepared by the transplant coordinator to facilitate illegal kidney transplant, said a release from the Health Department. Action must also be initiated against the staff and officials of district-level committees that submitted fake documents to the authorisation committee under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME&R), which is responsible for approving living donor organ transplants, the panel said. 'Reconstitute panels' The committee suggested reconstitution of district-level and State-level organ transplantation authorisation committees. It also suggested that the DME develop a Standard Operation Procedure for transplants involving live donors. The effects of organ donation must be explained to the live donors. In future, if organ recipients are unable to be present before the district-level committee, they should be interviewed online. Since documents pertaining to organ transplants are considered medico-legal, they should be kept for 10 years. The forms may be printed in Tamil and English. If applications for transplants are submitted from a particular village or taluk repeatedly, such applications should be given special attention and decisions taken accordingly. The Collectors should be apprised of such instances. More awareness must be created by the Collectors of live donor organ donation. Hospitals and doctors, too, should be educated regularly, the committee said.

Former Andhra Pradesh CM Jagan Mohan Reddy's quash petition posted by High Court for hearing on June 27

Justice Y. Lakshmana Rao of the Andhra Pradesh High Court posted the quash petition filed by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in the case of death of an elderly man Singaiah, during the former's recent visit to Rentapalla village in Palnadu district, to June 27, 2025. Singaiah has allegedly been crushed under the vehicle in which the former CM was going in a rally, for which he was arrayed as A-2 under Section 105 read with 49 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha, 2023. During the hearing of the petition on Thursday (June 26, 2025), Justice Lakshmana Rao agreed to take it up among fresh matters on Friday (June 27) as Mr. Mohan Reddy's lawyers pressed for urgent orders for interim protection amidst insistence by the counsels for the State that the matter be put off to July 1. The judge observed that perhaps no coercive steps would be taken against the petitioner (Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy) in the meantime. Jagan Mohan Reddy blames convoy death on lack of Z-plus security cover In his plea, Mr. Mohan Reddy submitted that he was innocent and the narration of the facts of the case indicate that the satisfaction of the Nallapadu Station House Officer to register a cognizable offence was not entirely objective. He alleged that the sequence of events leading to the registration of the FIR and further alterations thereof showed that the charges were tailored to implicate him with political vendetta and political malice.

Former driver and his friend held in elderly couple's murder at home in Hyderabad

Days after an elderly couple were found murdered inside their apartment, the police in Telangana's Cyberabad police Tuesday arrested two people, including the former driver of the deceased, in connection with the crime. Shaik Abdullah Abdul Hamid, a retired assistant general manager of the State Bank of India, and Ummatur Rafai Rizwana, a former lecturer, were found brutally murdered in their apartment in Rajedranagar's Upperpally on June 5. The arrested men have been identified as Mohammed Shakeel Salman, 33, a former driver of the deceased, and his friend Mohammed Mujeebuddin, 25, a driver from Medak town. The police said they also seized one knife, two cell phones, and other items related to the case. The case has been registered under sections 103(1), 332, and 302(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS). According to preliminary investigations, Salman harboured a grudge against the deceased couple. He had worked as their driver for approximately two years but was terminated eight months ago due to dissatisfaction with his performance. Feeling insulted and jobless, Salman allegedly decided to take revenge, said the police. The police said Salman owed money to Mujeebuddin, and sought his assistance in collecting the money from the deceased. The meticulously planned crime unfolded over two days. On June 4, the two men visited the deceased's former residence in Red Hills, Hyderabad, and learned of their new address at Arbiz Residency. That same night, they visited Arbiz Residency to confirm the couple's presence, said the police. According to the investigators, at around 5 pm on June 5, Salman and Mujeebuddin allegedly returned to the apartment building. Salman, disguised in a burqa, and Mujeebuddin, wearing a mask, approached the watchman, Rajesh Thapa, claiming to be Ali, a former watchman, and said they had come to meet the couple. Gaining entry under this pretext, they proceeded to the flat. After entering the flat, Salman allegedly locked the door from inside, and retrieved a knife from his backpack. He then attacked Hamid, inflicting severe injuries. When Rizwana attempted to intervene, Salman stabbed her as well. Mujeebuddin reportedly fled the scene during the attack. Both victims sustained multiple stab injuries and died on the spot. Before fleeing, Salman allegedly stole Rs. 600 from the deceased's pocket.

According to the police, the teen boy later confided to his parents that a woman in the neighborhood had sexually assaulted him on numerous occasions. 'When the parents found out, they lodged a complaint. It's a Pocso case, technically. Whether there is consent or not, it is an offence and action shall be taken as per the law,' a senior officer from West Zone told The boy and the woman work and the boy's parents too work in the same sector. 'They (boy and the woman) know each other well and work together at home,' the officer said. Apart from Pocso sections, the police have also incorporated relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhitha (BNS) in the First Information Report and launched an investigation. Under the Pocso Act, a comprehensive legal framework is provided to protect children under the age of 18 from sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and pornography. According to the Hyderabad City Police's last year's annual report, the number of Pocso cases registered in the city has gone up to 449 compared to 371 registered in 2023.
