Out bird hunting at night, Chhattisgarh man caught in ‘shootout between Maoists, security forces'
A 21-year-old tribal man, who had gone bird hunting on the night of August 14, suffered a bullet injury in his leg after purportedly getting caught in the crossfire during a shootout between security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, officials said. The district had been declared Naxal-free by the Centre earlier this year. Abhay Netam and three of his friends had gone to hunt birds in the Nelajhar jungle, under the jurisdiction of Keshkal police station, on August 14 night. The group was carrying an airgun to shoot the birds. 'We left around 9-10 pm on a bike to hunt birds in a jungle area near our gram panchayat. We were going into the jungle, but it started raining and we decided to return. The (security) forces suddenly came and asked us to stop. But we got scared and began to hide. My group left. After one round was fired, I told the police not to fire, but they still fired at me. They then took me to hospital,' Netam told reporters. The Kondagaon police issued a press note regarding the incident, saying the security forces, comprising District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bastar Fighters, had left on an anti-Naxal operation around 10.30 pm after getting information about the presence of Maoists in the Nelajhar jungle. The Maoists opened fire at the forces, after which the forces fired back at the Maoists, forcing them to retreat, the police said. During search operations, they found two Bharmar guns, Naxal uniforms and other items. At some distance from the encounter spot, they spotted an injured Netam and rushed him to the hospital, saving his life, the police claimed. Doctors treating Netam said he is now out of danger. 'He was brought to the district hospital at around 1 am after getting primary treatment at a Community Health Centre. When he was brought here, he was in shock and had lost a lot of blood. At around 2 am, a surgery was performed and he is now in a stable condition. The bullet pierced his pelvis and exited from the front. His pelvic bone is fractured and shattered,' Dr S Nagulan from the Kondagaon district hospital told the media.

Three top maoists killed by security forces in Andhra Pradesh
Alluri (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 18 (ANI): Three senior Maoist leaders, including AOBSZC Secretary Uday and East Division Secretary Aruna, were killed by security forces in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, as per the information from Alluri Sitharama Raju District SP. The police confirmed the operation took place in the area of the Andhra-Odisha Border. As per the statement from the Alluri Sitharama Raju District SP, 'In Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB), Maoists' AOBSZC (Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee) Secretary Uday and East Division Secretary Aruna, along with another cadre, killed by the security forces in Alluri Sitharama Raju district.' Recently, four hardcore Maoists were neutralised in an intense exchange of fire with Gadchiroli Police and CRPF personnel near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border on Friday morning, following a targeted anti-Naxal operation launched based on credible intelligence. According to the release, the operation, led by Additional SP Ramesh, involved 12 C60 commando teams, comprising around 300 personnel, and a CRPF unit. The operation was initiated on Thursday at noon from Kawande and Nelgunda, moving towards the Indravati riverbank near the recently opened Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kawande, despite heavy rainfall in the area. While laying a cordon and searching the riverbank, Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on the C60 commandos, prompting effective retaliation. The heavy exchange of fire lasted nearly two hours. A subsequent area search led to the recovery of four Maoist bodies, one automatic Self Loading Rifle, two .303 rifles, and a Bharmar. Additionally, walkie-talkies, camping materials, and Naxal literature were seized from the spot. Anti-Naxal operations and area searches are ongoing to locate remaining Maoists. Meanwhile, in a major blow to the Maoist insurgency, security forces in Chhattisgarh killed 27 Naxals, including CPI-Maoist General Secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, during a massive joint operation in the Abujmarh forests of Narayanpur district. Two wanted Maoists killed in Sukma encounter; weapons, explosives seized
Sukma: In a major breakthrough in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh, security forces recovered the bodies of two senior Maoists following an intense encounter in the forested terrain of Dunampara Pusgunna within Kukanar police station in the Sukma district, officials said on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Muchaki Baman, a commander of the Katekalyan Area Committee carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh, and senior Maoist cadre Anita Avalam, both considered key operatives in the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist outfit. Baman was a resident of Chikpal under Katekalyan police limits in Dantewada district, while Avalam hailed from the Bijapur region, the officials said. The joint team, comprising personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local police, launched the operation based on intelligence inputs indicating Maoist presence in the hilly jungles linked to the Katekalyan Area Committee. According to the Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan, the exchange of fire began at around 2 p.m. and lasted for several hours, officials added. In addition to the two bodies, security forces recovered an INSAS rifle, a Bharmar firearm, and a significant cache of explosives as well as Maoist materials from the site. The seized items include four gelatin sticks, 10 detonators, 17 rounds of INSAS ammunition, five cartridges of 12-bore ammunition, a soap bomb, a tiffin bomb, wire coils, safety fuses, and other incriminating materials. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range), Sundarraj P, said that the latest operation is part of a sustained campaign against Maoist extremism in the region. He noted that between January 2024 and June 2025, security forces under the Bastar division have recovered the bodies of 411 Maoists through coordinated action. He said that security forces such as the DRG, Special Task Force, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Central Armed Police Forces, and the Bastar Fighters are working with determination under the banner of "Sankalp: Naxal Mukt Bastar Mission". IGP Sundarraj highlighted that the Maoist movement, once emblematic of fear and disruption in Bastar, has reached a stage of fading into oblivion. He added that the region is now witnessing the early promise of peace and development, with operations continuing to dismantle the insurgency's remaining strongholds.

4 Maoists neutralised in Maha's Gadchiroli
Bhopal: Four Maoists were neutralised during an encounter with security forces along the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border in Gadchiroli district on Friday, officials said. The operation was set in motion on Thursday afternoon, following solid intelligence indicating the presence of Maoist groups near the newly established Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kawande. Acting on this information, 12 C-60 teams, consisting of 300 commandos, along with a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit, embarked on the mission from Kawande and Nelgunda, advancing toward the Indravati river despite relentless rain. As dawn broke on Friday, security forces were systematically securing the area and searching the riverbanks when they came under sudden and indiscriminate gunfire from Maoists, the officials said. The C-60 commandos promptly responded, triggering an intense exchange of fire that lasted close to two hours. Once the battle subsided, a thorough sweep of the area resulted in the discovery of four Maoist bodies, said the officials. The search also yielded a range of weapons and supplies, including an automatic self-loading rifle, two .303 rifles, a Bharmar gun, walkie-talkies, camping gear, and Maoist literature. This encounter comes on the heels of a significant crackdown in adjoining Chhattisgarh just two days earlier, where security forces decisively eliminated 27 Maoists, including their top commander, Basavaraju. However, a brave soldier lost his life in the fierce gun battle. On Friday, a Maoist was killed in an encounter in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh. The back-to-back operations highlight the ongoing battle against insurgency in the region and underscore the determination of security forces to maintain stability in affected areas. Authorities received intelligence suggesting the presence of a large number of Maoists in the dense forests of Kistaram. Acting upon the information, a joint task force comprising the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force, and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action was deployed for a search operation. As security personnel arrived at the location, the Maoists opened fire, prompting an immediate retaliation.

Bloody gunfight in Indravati river, 300 C60 commandos lay siege to island, wipe out oldest ‘dalam'
Nagpur: In one of the fiercest encounters that erupted in a river, not in the booby-trapped jungles, Maharashtra's 300 C-60 commandos waded through the Indravati and gunned down the Bhamragarh dalam commander and three other guerrillas, including two women rebels on Friday. The gunfight continued for three hours with commandos in waist-deep water moving fast to lay siege to a dry island patch in the middle of the river, which separates Maharashtra from Chhattisgarh. Besides engaging guerrillas in a bloody riverine battle, the daring operation wiped out one of the oldest armed formations of People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) in Gadchiroli district, which had dug in heels for almost four decades. The operation led by 12 rain-drenched teams of commandos, who were mobilised from Maharashtra's frontier police post of Kawande. While bodies of the dalam commander and three cadres, including two women, were recovered from the site, two other rebels are still missing. Security forces, under additional SP M Ramesh, waited in ambush for 36 hours in pounding rain at night, before surrounding the island in the riverbed where the Bhamragarh dalam guerrillas were camping. A team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was also present to assist the C-60 commandos. This siege triggered intermittent firing before bodies of the Maoists were spotted on the ground. "We had intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoists near Kawande, where we opened our last post. We launched the operation despite inclement weather at daybreak. It was a strategic success of our team," said SP Gadchiroli, Neelotpal, adding he's still probing the whereabouts of two missing cadres. A self-loading rifle, two .303 rifles, one Bharmar rifle, and more than 100 rounds of ammunition were seized from the encounter site. With the Bhamragarh dalam wrapped up by security forces in the latest face-off, Maharashtra is now left with around seven members of the Gatta dalam, three of Aheri, and about 15 members of last standing formation of the battle-hardened Company No. 10 in Maharashtra, which is based deep inside Abujmarh. Commandos are now pushing to decimate Company No. 10. The action came shortly after Maoist general secretary, Basavaraju, was gunned down along with 26 others in their stronghold. The decimation of the Bhamragarh dalam dealt a deadly blow to the Maoist movement in Maharashtra, with the rebel base in Gadchiroli totally cut off from their guerrilla headquarters of Abujmarh. Police sources stated the Bhamragarh dalam members had narrowly escaped a week ago at a location inside Abujmarh from where they abandoned their weapons and fled. Commander Sonnu Masa Pungati, known for his expertise in improvised explosive device (IED), was among those killed, along with Ashok Wadde, who had 17 cases against him, including five murders. Pungati and Wadde were residents of Kawande hamlet, which was once part of the Maoist's liberated corridor. Woman guerrilla Binjyo Hoyami, a Chhattisgarh native, who had five murder cases against her was neutralised along with her comrade Karuna Pandu, alias Mamita, resident of Gadchiroli. "We repeatedly appealed to Maoists to give up arms and return to the mainstream. With the loss of public support and military prowess, only 40 cadres are currently left in Maharashtra," said Neelotpal, adding Maharashtra would meet the March 2026 deadline set by the Union home minister. The operation was also monitored by DIG(Naxal range) Ankit Goyal. IG, State Anti-Naxal Operation Cell, Sandip Patil, stated the opening of the last post at Kawande led to the recent success. "Kawande was their last bastion on the side of Bhamragarh on the banks of Indravati. We dismantled their stone memorials and removed IEDs from the area, and ousted the 'janatana sarkar' to usher peace and development," said IG Patil.
