New cases hit a century in biggest single-day spike in current wave

Kolkata: Bengal on Thursday logged the highest single-day spike in Covid cases during the current wave, with the state reporting 106 positive cases in the past 24 hours. The total active cases in the state now stand at 538, even as the figure is way down from Kerala, which has the highest case load in the country with 1,487 cases. In May beginning, the city had only a single Covid-positive case. By the end of the third week of May, 12 more individuals tested positive. Health officials said the rapid spike began at the end of May when the active case load piled up to 205. From June 1, the state logged daily positive cases in double digits until it scaled up to three digits on Thursday. "There still is an uptick in states like Kerala, Delhi, and Maharashtra, and hence we are likely to see an upward Covid graph in our state for now. Even as we are still getting very few samples, most of these samples are coming positive," said microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri of Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the present case load is unlikely to be the true picture of the infection in the community, as many are not coming forward to test. While the infection is mild in almost all cases, they said detecting the infection was important to protect the vulnerable. While the good aspect is that most infections are mild, if the numbers keep surging, there will be a few patients who will be vulnerable to severe infection," said infectious diseases specialist Sayan Chakraborty of Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria. Apart from Bengal, three other states reported daily cases in three digits on Thursday: Kerala (114), Karnataka (112) and Delhi (105). "While the disease is causing only flu-like symptoms, the surge in numbers is a concern as the infection can be more aggressive on the geriatric population and the immunocompromised," said infectious disease control specialist Debkishore Gupta. While the state has reported only one Covid-19 related death so far, doctors said that if the number of cases continues to rise, there can be more mortality. Some hospitals have a few patients admitted to the ICU. "Among the seven admitted to our hospital, three senior citizens with comorbidities are requiring oxygen, while the rest are being treated in the ward," said Doli Biswas, chief nursing officer at Fortis Hospital Anandapur. Fifteen Covid-positive patients are under care at Ruby General Hospital. Sources said none has a severe infection. "While none of the four patients under our care has a severe infection, they are in hospital care due to their comorbidities," said Charnock Hospital general manager Ipsita Kundu. Most hospitals across the city currently have Covid positive patients, including the govt facilities. "We currently have three patients, including an infant and the mother. None of them is requiring intensive care so far," said Sudipta Mitra, CEO of Peerless Hospital.

7-month-old among 60 fresh Covid-positive patients in state

1 2 Kolkata: A seven-month-old baby was among the 60 fresh Covid-positive cases reported in Bengal on Wednesday. The infant, possibly the youngest to get the infection in the state during this current spike, is admitted to Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the child is doing well and does not need intensive care. Since the mother also had mild symptoms, her swab samples were tested and she tested positive as well. With the 60 fresh cases, the total active Covid load in the state has crossed 400. According to sources, the infant was symptomatic with a high-grade fever, sneezing, runny nose, and cough. As she was refusing any kind of feed, including breast milk, and had become increasingly irritable, the parents brought her to the hospital on Monday. "The infant showed noticeable symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. As she refused feed for over eight hours before being brought to the hospital, dehydration set in, and there was decreased urine output," said paediatrician Sanjukta De, who is treating the infant. The upper respiratory samples were sent for confirmation of the type of viral infection via the virus panel test, which can detect 15 odd viruses, including adeno, parainfluenza, RSV, and influenza. The hospital said that the parents of the child, who are residents of south Kolkata, do not have a travel history. However, during the history-taking process, it was noted that the domestic help had a high-grade fever a few days ago, after which the baby's mother developed a mild cough and fever. The child is now recovering with a nebuliser, IV fluid, and other supportive care. "In the past few days, I have come across a good number of children below one year of age with upper respiratory symptoms. But most parents did not want tests to be done. It is alright if the symptoms are mild and simple paracetamol works. But parents should avoid over-the-counter drugs in case the symptoms linger. Instead, they should consult doctors," added De. Doctors said even if Covid-19 largely spared younger children during the pandemic only with mild symptoms, they are seeing some children needing hospitalisation during this current uptick. In fact, there have been reports of at least three other cases of children requiring hospital care in the past two weeks, including a 15-year-old boy in Peerless, a nine-month-old child at Medical College Hospital (MCH), and a two-year-old child at Malda Medical College. While all three have been discharged from the hospital, sources in the health department said a child currently admitted at MCH has also tested positive for Covid-19. Sources in the health department said the child, however, has various health issues, and Covid was an incidental finding. The child is recovering well.

Season's 1st Covid death in state is 43-yr-old with comorbidities

1 2 Kolkata: Bengal saw its first Covid-related death this year, after a 43-year-old woman passed away at a south Kolkata hospital on Tuesday. The deceased had heart and kidney ailments, said sources. This was among the five Covid deaths reported across the country on Tuesday. While the current spike is causing mostly mild infections, individuals with comorbidities need to remain cautious as they were vulnerable to severe infections, said health experts. The state reported 41 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total active caseload to 372, most of which are concentrated in Kolkata. At present, almost all major hospitals across the city have patients admitted for Covid treatment. The 43-year-old woman was admitted to CMRI Hospital on May 28 with complaints of a two-week-long bout of fever and respiratory distress. Suspected of an infection, her respiratory samples were sent for a viral panel test and she tested positive for Covid-19. While she apparently had no existing health conditions, tests revealed her heart ejection fraction was as low as 20%. Her urine output kept declining, due to which she was given dialysis. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Initially under BiPAP support, doctors had to put her on ventilation as she kept sinking. "On finding sepsis indications, our medical team put up their best. But the decline in her condition, including the organ damage, was very swift. Some adjuvant health conditions were probably the cause of such a fast decline," said the unit medical head of the hospital. The death report cites acute coronary syndrome, acute kidney injury and septic shock in a case of Covid-19. Of the eight Covid-19 positive patients admitted at the hospital, the 43-year-old was the only one under intensive care. Reacting to this, Peerless Hospital chief microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri said: "Whenever there is an outbreak of any infection like influenza, adenovirus, or Covid-19, there would be a few mortalities. That is the reason why the vulnerable need to remain protected." Peerless's lab detected three positive cases on Tuesday, including that of a child, who is admitted at the hospital. Critical care and ECMO specialist Arpan Chakraborty of Apollo Multispecialty Hospital said that a section of patients with comorbidities was likely to need intensive care if they tested positive for Covid. Among the seven Covid positive patients admitted at the hospital was an 80-year-old man who had heart issues. "Timely detection and close monitoring in hospital are required for patients," said infectious diseases specialist Sayan Chakraborty of Manipal Hospital Dhakuria. "We have three Covid patients, including one in the ICU, while we discharged two recently," said Doli Biswas, chief nursing officer of Fortis Hospital Anandapur. RN Tagore Hospital has two Covid-19 positive patients.

1 2 3 Kolkata: Though there is no indication of any spike in Covid-19 cases in Bengal, multiple cases of the virus has surfaced after a lull. A 15-year-old boy was admitted to a hospital off EM Bypass in the latest case. Sources said another patient admitted to a nursing home in Kankurgachhi had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. There were also reports of two other cases from Mograhat in Diamond Harbour. This takes the active case count to four in Bengal at present. Until about a week ago, there was only a single active case. The teenager from Rishra was brought to Peerless Hospital's OPD on Saturday morning with complaints of high-grade fever, cough, loose stool, vomiting, and severe dehydration. The respiratory panel test detected SARS-CoV-2, negating the other 14 viruses that the biofire test can detect. "The boy did not have any respiratory distress, but his fever, cough, and other gastrointestinal complaints were not resolving despite being treated by a local doctor. He came in a bad shape due to severe dehydration. The abdominal issues were more prominent than the respiratory issues," said paediatric critical care specialist Saheli Dasgupta, under whom the boy is admitted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Currently, the teenager is being treated in a single isolated cabin following the protocol. "This is the first SARS-CoV-2 detected in our lab since Sept 2024," said microbiology head Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri at Peerless. Sources in the health department said a 20-year-old woman and a child from the same family in Mograhat tested positive for the virus on May 21. While both are fine and did not need hospital treatment, district health officials are closely monitoring the locality for anyone suffering from ILI (influenza-like illness), and the surveillance will continue for at least two more days. Their samples had been collected as part of a pan-India surveillance. Another positive woman from Kolkata was treated and discharged from Woodlands Hospital in the second week of May. "This patient did not have any comorbidity and did not require oxygen support. While there is no reason to panic as this virus has become mostly self-limiting to healthy individuals, it could cause severe infection in patients with comorbidities, particularly COPD," said critical care specialist Soutik Panda of Woodlands Hospital.
