Scholarship ‘scam': 40 schools under scanner for fraud of 58L

Bhopal: A scholarship scam has come to light, where 40 educational institutions (schools) are under investigation for allegedly defrauding the govt of nearly Rs 58 lakh by enrolling ineligible students under the minority scholarship scheme for the academic year 2021–2022. After investigations, Bhopal Crime Branch registered a case in the matter. It was revealed that the schools, although officially recognised only up to Class 10, fraudulently submitted scholarship applications for students in Classes 11 and 12, thereby siphoning off the allocated funds. Additional DCP (Crime Branch) Shailendra Singh Chouhan said that the assistant director, backward classes and minority welfare department, Bhopal, submitted a formal complaint to the police commissioner on June 17. The complaint referenced a detailed letter from the office of the district collector, minority welfare, highlighting fraudulent practices in institutions availing benefits under the central govt's minority scholarship scheme. Based on the initial complaint and documents submitted, the matter was registered as a complaint. Following preliminary inquiries, it was found that the listed 40 institutions—along with their directors, nodal officers, and heads—fraudulently registered 972 ineligible students on the scholarship portal and received Rs 57,78,300 from the govt. Subsequently, an FIR on charges of fraud under relevant sections of IPC was registered. Investigations revealed that the accused institutions knowingly caused financial loss to the govt by submitting forged documents and enrolling ghost students to claim scholarship funds. The investigation is currently underway to determine whether the fraud was limited to illegal fund acquisition or also involved fabricating the identities of the students themselves. Police and officials/authorities concerned are scrutinising the roles played by these institutions in the fraudulent activity.
