BMC council meet after 3 months, but civic issues nowhere on agenda

Bhopal: The forthcoming Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) council meeting continues to sidestep pressing public concerns like deteriorating roads and monsoon drainage problems. According to sources, the agenda centres on new immersion ghats, Amrut 2.0 initiatives, and location naming matters. The corporation has distributed the meeting agenda to all councillors for the July 24 session. As part of the upcoming council agenda, there's a proposal to rename Old Ashoka Garden to Ram Bagh, and to designate the junction near Vivekanand Park as Vivekanand Chowk. The meeting at ISBT, commencing on July 24, will begin by acknowledging sanitation workers and residents for Bhopal's achievement of second position nationally amongst cities. Seasonal greetings for Sawan and upcoming festivities will follow. A 60-minute question session precedes the primary agenda discussion. The administration has already issued the formal agenda. The council convenes after a three-month and 21-day interval, with the previous meeting held on April 3, despite bi-monthly meeting requirements. The MIC holds authority to postpone council meetings up to one year. The opposition Congress party continues submitting appeals to the divisional commissioner for regular council sessions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo BMC chairman Kishan Suryavanshi requested BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan via correspondence to address waterlogging, road conditions, drainage maintenance and ward-level sewage concerns for residents' monsoon convenience. The agenda includes establishing immersion facilities at four city locations, recently approved by the Mayor-in-Council. New sites are planned at Barkatullah University campus, Neelbadh, Sanjeev Nagar, Malipura and Prempura, requiring Rs 25.08 crore. Additional items include Amrut 2.0 tenders and renaming Old Ashoka Garden to Ram Bagh and Parihar Chauraha to Vivekanand Chowk. The opposition seeks discussion regarding the public toilet fee increase from Rs 6 to Rs 10 across 25 facilities, suggesting improper implementation benefiting Sulabh International.

Amid Swachh success, most sanitation workers work without raincoats

Bhopal: In Bhopal, the jubilation of achieving second place nationally in the Swachh Survekshan 2025 has been dampened by concerns over inadequate provision of essential equipment to sanitation workers. The celebration amongst officials stands in stark contrast to the situation of the city's 8,000 sanitation workers, most of whom continue to work through heavy rains without proper protection. Despite the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) placing an order worth Rs 50 lakh for raincoats in July 2024, the implementation remains incomplete after a year. "I haven't received a raincoat in over a year," said Kalla, who works in Ward 47. In Ward 43, Gullu Soni shared that his raincoat quickly became unusable from grime and daily wear. Fellow worker Rakesh, also in Ward 43, reported that raincoats had reached the zone office, but were still "awaiting distribution." Meanwhile, Rahul from Ward 69 took pride in Bhopal's national honour but admitted he was still working without a raincoat. This situation highlights a significant disparity: while Bhopal achieves recognition for its sanitation standards, the essential workers responsible for this achievement lack basic protective equipment. In the areas that contributed to the city's high ranking, the reality of workers performing their duties without proper gear contradicts the celebratory atmosphere. Despite Bhopal's improved standing in official assessments, sanitation workers persist in their duties of maintaining drains and streets with limited resources. When contacted BMC officials were in Delhi and unreachable.

From City of Lakes to Clean City: Bhopal Ranked Second in Swachh Survey

Bhopal: India's fresh batch of clean cities has made its mark, with a new lineup emerging as top contenders in the 'Swachh Shehar' charts. The rankings this year was shaped by a key structural change—previous champions like Indore were shifted into a separate League, allowing other cities a chance to rise. Among these, Bhopal climbed to second place nationally, missing the top spot by just 12 points. Indore has held that position for seven straight years, the tag of India's cleanest city. Bhopal's performance this year proves it's not far behind. "This achievement is a result of the cooperation and awareness of the dedicated employees of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Safai Mitras, officials, and above all, the people of Bhopal," said Bhopal mayor Malti Rai. Out of maximum 12,500 score, Bhopal got 12067. Indore scored 12,080 points out of 12,500 in Swachh Survekshan 2025. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission , Bhopal has attained recognition as India's second cleanest city amongst municipalities with populations exceeding 10 lakh in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The award ceremony took place on Thursday at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the honour to MP Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai, and BMC commissioner Harendra Narayan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Bhopal secured a 7-Star ranking in the "Garbage-Free City" category while maintaining its status as India's cleanest state capital and Water+ city status. This performance positioned Bhopal as second nationally and first in the state for cities exceeding 10 lakh population. City may leap to cleaner image in Swachh ranking as new league levels playing field

Bhopal: As the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 results await announcement in New Delhi on Thursday, Bhopal stands poised to advance in the national cleanliness standings. The introduction of the Super Swachh League for 2024 establishes an exclusive category for consistently high-performing cities. This new league comprises 12 distinguished cities that achieved top-three positions in at least two years between 2021 and 2023. The separation of cities like Indore, Surat and Navi Mumbai into the elite league presents fresh opportunities for other urban centres to improve their positions. Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials acknowledge previous winners of cleanest city, outside the Super Swachh League, offering a tangible path to national acknowledgement for Bhopal. Eight cities from Madhya Pradesh—Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, Dewas, Budni, and Shahganj—were nominated for national recognition under the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, India's annual urban cleanliness survey conducted by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs. Throughout the previous year, Bhopal enhanced its sanitation initiatives and beautification activities, particularly during the Global Investors Summit (GIS) period, which aligned with survey assessments. The city's infrastructure development includes functional bio-CNG and charcoal facilities, systematic waste management processes, and distributed recycling centres. The achievement of Water Plus and ODF certifications demonstrates compliance with mission standards, while initiatives such as RRR on Wheels and Swachhta Samadhan Kendras have encouraged public engagement. Under this revised competitive structure, BMC anticipates that its implementations will result in an enhanced national position and fresh recognition within the Swachh Bharat Mission framework.
