Malnutrition shadow on WCD minister Nirmala Bhuria's backyard Malwa-Nimar
Bhopal: Fresh data from the Centre has placed three districts from the state's Malwa-Nimar belt, home turf of state women and child development minister Nirmala Bhuria, among the 10 worst-affected in the country for child malnutrition. Figures tabled in the Lok Sabha on July 25 show that 42.54% of children attending anganwadis in Dhar are underweight, ranking it third in the country. Khargone (formerly West Nimar) follows with 36.19%, and Barwani with 36.04%. The findings underscore a grim irony: the state's WCD minister hails from this very region. Bhuria, who is from Petlawad in Jhabua district, leads the state's nutrition drive while the crisis remains most acute in her own political backyard. Nationally, Nandurbar in Maharashtra tops the list with 48.26% underweight children, followed by West Singhbhum in Jharkhand (44.80%). Dhar ranks third, with Khargone and Barwani also in the top 10. The data highlights Madhya Pradesh's disproportionate share of the national malnutrition burden. In the same reply to a question by Bihar MP Sudama Prasad, Union minister of state for WCD Savitri Thakur detailed funds released under Mission Poshan 2.0. Madhya Pradesh received Rs 4,364.69 crore between 2021-22 and 2024-25. When contacted, Bhuria said: "We are regularly monitoring the data and initiating several innovative interventions. As a pilot in Jhabua district, we launched a drive named 'Motihai' (Badi Maa in the local language). At every anganwadi, a woman was deployed to massage the kids and provide traditional nutrition. We prepared files for each child who needed care, and even children migrating with their parents are being tracked. This innovation has given very good results in Jhabua. We will be initiating such initiatives in other districts like Dhar, Khargone, Barwani, and wherever such interventions are required." Rs 40 for cows, Rs 12 for children: Madhya Pradesh's nutrition budget under fire
The Madhya Pradesh government's spending on nutrition for malnourished children has come under fire from the Opposition, after official figures tabled in the state assembly revealed that only Rs 8 and Rs 12 per day are being allocated for malnourished and severely malnourished children, response to a question raised by Congress MLA Vikrant Bhuria, the Women and Child Development Department disclosed the daily allowance figures in the assembly. The Congress party has slammed the budget as inadequate and questioned how malnutrition could be eradicated with such low to government data, 1.36 lakh children across the state are currently malnourished. Of these, 29,830 are classified as severely malnourished and 1.06 lakh as moderately malnourished. The state's malnutrition rate stands at 7.79 per cent, significantly above the national average of 5.40 per cent. 'The government is spending Rs 8 to Rs 12 per day on malnourished children, but Rs 40 has been allocated for cow feed per day,' Bhuria said in the assembly. 'Milk costs Rs 70 per litre, and officials spend thousands on snacks and dry fruits in a single meeting, but only Rs 12 is available to feed children whose skin is stuck to their bones.'The situation in tribal-dominated districts such as Sheopur, Dhar, Khargone, Barwani, Chhindwara, and Balaghat is particularly alarming. In several districts, reports suggest that one in every four children is severely Kartik from Sheopur, brought by his grandmother to a Nutrition Rehabilitation Center (NRC), is among those severely affected. His frail condition, with bones visible beneath the skin, highlights the gravity of the crisis. Similarly, six-month-old twins Gaurav and Saurav from Bhikhapur village have also been admitted to an NRC due to severe the shortfall, Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Development Minister Nirmala Bhuria admitted that the current provision is inadequate. 'We have requested additional funds from the central government,' she said. 'Other states have also sought an increase in the nutrition allowance.'- EndsTune InMust Watch

Middlemen demanding money for Anganwadi workers job, says MP minister
Jhabua, Jul 26 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Nagar Singh Chouhan on Saturday alleged that middlemen were demanding money for securing the job of `Anganwadi' worker, an allegation refuted by his cabinet colleague Nirmala Bhuria. Women and Child Development (WCD) department headed by Bhuria has launched an online recruitment drive for 17,477 posts of Anganwadi workers and 2,077 posts of assistants since May 23. Anaganwadis are state-run pre-primary schools, mostly located in tribal areas. In a video, Chouhan claimed that middlemen were demanding money from tribal candidates for securing jobs, and officials of the WCD department might be complicit in this racket. The four-time MLA from Alirajpur constituency — reserved for Scheduled Tribes — appealed to tribal candidates not to pay anyone. When contacted, WCD minister Bhuria told PTI that the recruitment process was fully online and transparent. Madhya Pradesh was the first state in the country to implement an online system for recruiting Anganwadi workers, she said. 'Our department's online recruitment model is being studied by other states. If Chouhan has received any complaints, he can submit them on the appropriate platform. I have not received any such complaint," she added. PTI COR LAL KRK First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. M.P. turning into ‘rape capital': Congress asks PM Modi to get State a ‘full time' Home Minister before May 31 visit
A day after a 45-year-old tribal woman died after she was allegedly brutally gang raped in Madhya Pradesh's Khandwa, the Congress on Monday (May 26, 2025) launched a scathing attack at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that the State was turning into India's 'rape capital'. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Vikrant Bhuria, Adivasi Congress president, termed the incident as 'Adivasi Nirbhaya case', linking it with the infamous Nirbhaya case in 2012 in the national capital. Mr. Bhuria, an MLA from M.P.'s Jhabua, also targeted M.P. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also holds the Home portfolio, saying that the law and order in the State has gone 'completely out of control'. 'Ever since, the Chief Minister has been handling the Home Department, the State has seen an 18% in rape cases. This figure was given in response to a question in the State Assembly,' Mr. Bhuria said, claiming that 26 percent victims of the total reported rape cases are from the tribal community. According to the police, the incident took place on May 23 night in Khandwa's Eitwa village under Roshni police outpost area after the victim attended a wedding in her neighbourhood and that two men, both neighbours of the victim, have been arrested in the matter. Superintendent of Police, Khandwa, Manoj Kumar Rai told The Hindu that after the wedding, the victim and the accused were returning together and one of the accused, Hari Palvi, took them to his house where the two raped her brutally. The other accused has been identified as Sunil Korku. Mr. Rai said that the accused were so brutal in the act that parts of the woman's small intestine had come out of her body and she was bleeding excessively. He, however, said that it was not yet confirmed what they had inserted in her private parts. Additional SP Raghuvanshi said that Hari's mother had first seen the woman on May 24 morning lying injured after which she informed the victim's family. 'The family took the victim home but police were only informed after her death around 2.30 p.m.,' he said. Mr. Bhuria took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled May 31 visit to Bhopal to attend a women's conference and asked Mr. Modi to ensure that the State gets a 'full time' home minister. 'The CM is not able to handle the Home Department,' he said. 'Look at the irony... in the state where the maximum crimes against women are taking place - rapes are happening, a 'Maha Mahila Sammelan' is being organised for women,' he said, asking Mr. Modi to ensure women's safety in M.P. Mr. Bhuria also took a dig at the BJP government over its decision to close liquor shops in prominent religious places while alleging that it has 'no control over the liquor mafia'. 'The drama of sharab bandi (liquor ban) is done but the BJP government of the State has no control over liquor mafias and criminals. Madhya Pradesh is becoming a rape capital and liquor capital,' he said. Mr. Bhruia said that the doctors who performed a post mortem on the victim's body were also shocked to see her condition. 'When the victim's 16-year-old daughter had fainted after seeing her mother. Imagine the condition of the girl,' he said. Mr. Rai also said that he has issued orders for a paced up probe and special monitoring of the case. Earlier in April, three minor girls and a woman of the tribal community were allegedly gang raped by seven men when they were returning from a wedding in Balaghat district.

Drive to disperse seed balls via drones launched in Jhabua
Indore: A drive of dispersing seed balls via hexacopter drones was inaugurated in the tribal-dominated Jhabua district to increase green cover over its hilly terrains under the 'Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan' — a water conservation campaign. The drive was launched by the cabinet minister for women and child development, Nirmala Bhuria, and collector Neha Meena. The guests witnessed the drone technology as seeds of tamarind and custard apple were dispersed. Subsequently, 'Didis' (sisters) from the Livelihood Mission, who meticulously prepared seed balls to fit the drone's outlets, oversaw its wide-scale dispersal. Bhuria expressed her optimism, stating that last year's seed ball dispersal under the 'Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan' yielded positive results. "This year, the seed ball spraying will be carried out on a much larger scale, and I extend my best wishes and congratulations for this endeavour," she said. The minister highlighted the advantage of drones, which can reach remote areas and dense forests for effective seed dispersal. Bhuria also appealed to everyone to participate in tree plantation and ensure their protection until maturity, emphasising its necessity in view of climate change. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed!
