MPT seeks UNESCO World Heritage tag for five MP forts

Bhopal: The MPT Board has sent a proposal to ASI for including five historically significant heritage sites from the state in UNESCO's tentative list. The selected historical monuments under consideration are Asirgarh, Devgarh, Raisen Fort, Bagh Caves, and Ginnaurgarh Fort. Madhya Pradesh already has 18 heritage sites declared by UNESCO, out of which 3 are in the permanent list and 15 in the tentative list. MPT officials said that the inclusion of five new heritage sites from Madhya Pradesh in UNESCO's tentative list will mark a significant step towards preserving the state's rich cultural heritage. "These historical monuments showcase unique architectural styles and cultural significance spanning several centuries," said Additional Managing Director, MPT Board, Bidisha Mukherjee. She added, "We have started working on 12 sites for inclusion in the tentative list of UNESCO, out of which 5 have been sent to ASI. Their inclusion will give us international recognition, increased tourist inflow, and enhancement of our brand value." Asirgarh, a formidable hill fortress, demonstrates medieval military architecture and strategic importance. The fort's impressive defensive structures and water management systems reflect the advanced engineering capabilities of its time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Devgarh, known for its remarkable temples and archaeological remains, represents the artistic excellence of ancient Indian craftsmen. The site contains valuable inscriptions and sculptures that provide insights into historical religious practices. Raisen Fort, perched atop a hill, exemplifies the blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural elements. Its massive walls, bastions, and palatial structures stand as a testament to the region's architectural evolution. The Bagh Caves, comprising Buddhist rock-cut monuments, feature elaborate paintings and sculptures. These caves serve as important evidence of Buddhist artistic traditions and monastic life during the ancient period. Ginnaurgarh Fort, with its distinctive defensive architecture, represents the military prowess of medieval kingdoms. The fort's location and construction techniques highlight period-specific fortification methods. The process of inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage list involves thorough documentation and assessment of each site's outstanding universal value. The state govt undertook several conservation measures and infrastructure development at these locations. Local communities near these sites are being trained in heritage conservation and tourism management. The govt is also developing sustainable tourism plans to balance preservation with visitor access. These additions would strengthen Madhya Pradesh's position as a significant cultural heritage destination.
