Bank Holidays 2025: Why are banks closed today, May 26, in THIS state?
Bank Holidays 2025: On Monday, May 26, banks in Tripura (capital: Agartala) will be closed to mark Kazi Nazrul Islam's birth anniversary, a well-known figure in Bengali literature and India's freedom movement. However, this closure is not observed nationwide, and banks in the remaining states will continue to open as usual. Bank holidays in India are outlined by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), including the Negotiable Instruments Act, RTGS holidays, and other regional and national holidays, in addition to the mandatory weekly off on the second Saturday and Sunday of every month. Kazi Nazrul Islam was a recognised Bengali poet, lyricist, journalist, and musician, renowned for his revolutionary spirit, and his writings which emphasised themes such as social justice, human rights, resistance against oppression, spiritual devotion, and equality. Also known as the 'Bidrohi Kobi' or 'Rebel Poet', Kazi Nazrul was a major force behind the cultural and political awakening that happened during India's fight for independence. It's important to note that despite the physical closure of bank branches in Tripura, essential banking services will continue to be available through digital and self-service platforms: Customers are encouraged to plan any in-branch visits around the holiday and make use of online options for uninterrupted banking.
