Updates and highlights from Jacksonville Jaguars' latest OTA practice

Updates and highlights from Jacksonville Jaguars' latest OTA practice Stay up to date with highlights and insights from the Jacksonville Jaguars' latest OTA practice. The Jacksonville Jaguars are back on the practice field on Monday for their seventh OTA practice of Phase III. Below we have highlights and updates from the media members who are in attendance. As the Jaguars implement a new system on offense, as Liam Coen said following the first practice, Jacksonville is still in the "learning phase" as they build towards September. Right now, the emphasis is on fundamentals, technique, and communication as the playbook gets installed. From Week 1 to Week 2 of practices--the Jaguars are currently in Week 3--Coen saw noticeable progress. 'I thought (the day went) better than probably expected, that way in terms of bodies on the ground and practicing cleaner," Coen said after last Tuesday's practice, via Big Cat Country. "It was much cleaner than day one, let's just say. When you're just trying to come in and get it going again after a few days off, I thought it was definitely cleaner. Was it perfect? No, but I thought it was better than the previous Monday, if you will.' The defense is undergoing its own change under new coordinator Anthony Campanile. Like any play caller, Campanile has his core principles that he will build this defense around, but this is also going to be a malleable scheme that adjusts quickly to what the opponent is doing and is built to maximize the skill sets on the roster. Of course, scheme matters, but equally as important to Campanile is that his players have the right play style as well. "The most important thing when you talk about defense is your play-style," said Campanile earlier this offseason. "My vision for us defensively, we want to be a tough, fast, physical, violent at the point of attack team. "What does that mean? That means that you got guys who take pride in not getting blocked. Everybody talks about running to the ball, I don't think there's another person in the world who believes in running to the ball more than I do. But you can't run to the ball if you don't get off blocks, and that is something that's going to be celebrated in our room." Please note that this article will be updated as practice unfolds. Jacksonville Jaguars showing progress in new-look offense

Jacksonville Jaguars showing progress in new-look offense The Jacksonville Jaguars' offense is showing progress in the new-look system under Liam Coen. The Jacksonville Jaguars were back on the practice field on Tuesday for their fourth practice of OTAs, the second of which was open to the media. As one would expect, as the offense gets more live reps in the new system, the practices are becoming cleaner. 'I thought (the day went) better than probably expected, that way in terms of bodies on the ground and practicing cleaner," Coen said after practice, via Big Cat Country. "It was much cleaner than day one, let's just say. When you're just trying to come in and get it going again after a few days off, I thought it was definitely cleaner. Was it perfect? No, but I thought it was better than the previous Monday, if you will.' As Coen would describe following the Jaguars' first OTA practice last Monday, which included a few interceptions and the ball being put on the ground multiple times, the offense is still in the "learning phase," and "working towards playing in September." Of course, Coen wants to see the players compete and wants every play executed cleanly, but more so right now, he's evaluating mental errors, communication, formations, alignments, assignments, and technique because if the basics can't be executed properly, then the play is all but doomed. As Trevor Lawrence mentioned after last week's practice, he really likes Coen's offense, specifically that it has all the answers. However, he also mentioned that it puts a lot on the players' plates, and with that, can come a steep learning curve. "I really like it," Lawrence said. "It has a lot of answers. It's great. It puts a lot on the players, you have to know your stuff, but it gives you all the answers." It's one thing to learn the playbook on paper and know what to do correctly in the meeting rooms. It's entirely different, however, to be able to replicate all of that on the field when everything is moving incredibly fast and the defense is presenting the offense with different looks. Like anything that is new, the more reps the Jaguars' offense gets, the more productive they'll be.

How UDFA QB Seth Henigan ended up on the Jacksonville Jaguars' radar

How UDFA QB Seth Henigan ended up on the Jacksonville Jaguars' radar UDFA QB Seth Henigan wasn't initially on Liam Coen's radar. So how did he end up with the Jacksonville Jaguars? Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan, who the Jacksonville Jaguars signed as an undrafted rookie, wasn't initially on Liam Coen's radar. However, a text from former NFL head coach and media personality with Barstool Sports, Jon Gruden, changed that. 'I'll be honest, hadn't watched a ton of his tape before we ended up bringing him in," Coen said after Saturday's practice via Big Cat Country. "Once we did, I got to talk to him. Jon Gruden actually hit me up about him. Shot me a text, I think they spent some time together during the offseason." Henigan was featured on 'Gruden's QB Class' earlier this offseason. Henigan is an experienced quarterback, with over 2,000 dropbacks during his four seasons at Memphis. For his career, he has completed 64% of his passes at 7.9 yards per attempt with 104 touchdowns to 31 interceptions. In 2024 specifically, Henigan has the 12th-lowest turnover-worthy play rate among quarterbacks, according to PFF, and he had the sixth-highest big-time throw rate as well. You can definitely see the coach's kid mentality," Coen added. "He did a great job of calling the plays and having the command. We weren't just out there calling one play. We were canning plays, two play calls, he was handling all that stuff well. So, time will tell, but definitely a good guy to start off with.' Henigan will be competing with John Wolford for the third quarterback role on the Jaguars' depth chart, whether that comes on the 53-man or the practice squad, depending on how many quarterbacks Coen wants to keep on the active roster.

Jaguars' HC Liam Coen explains how Dyami Brown pairs with Brian Thomas Jr. at WR

Jaguars' HC Liam Coen explains how Dyami Brown pairs with Brian Thomas Jr. at WR Jaguars' head coach Liam Coen recently explained how Dyami Brown will pair with Brian Thomas Jr. and the rest of the offense. How does the addition of Dyami Brown to the Jacksonville Jaguars' offense pair with Brian Thomas Jr. and the rest of that unit? Head coach Liam Coen recently highlighted at the NFL's annual league meeting how the addition of Brown can help Thomas expand his role within the offense--something that is a priority for Coen this season. In short, having Brown on the team, who adds another vertical presence to the offense, gives the Jaguars an additional player who can be that downfield threat. This, in turn, then allows Thomas, who Coen wants the offense to run through, to handle other responsibilities and more frequently attack other parts of the field. 'I think it's just another ball in hand athlete who can also take the top off the defense," Coen said of Brown on Action Sports Jax via Big Cat Country. "We can't have it so that BT is always running vertical down the field or we're not going to be able to target him quite as much. "You start to get further and further down the field, sometimes that percentage goes lower and lower. So, okay, we added a piece that helps get somebody else down the field where BT doesn't have to be that." If Thomas isn't going to be stretching the field as often this season, that presence within the offense is still needed. When a defense respects an offense's ability to push the ball, it forces them to spread out and protect against the downfield throw, and that can then open up opportunities underneath and over the middle of the field. With that said, Brown isn't only a deep threat. As Coen says, he has the ability to make defenders miss in space. So the opportunity to get him the ball on designed touches or near the line of scrimmage in space very much exists as well. "He does something that I can't coach," added Coen, "he makes people miss in space, right? At the end of the day, we can get people open. We can design and scheme things. We can coach open field running and sideline running, but it's typically a trait they have that they can go out and do that I have nothing to do with.' Brown's 308 receiving yards during the 2024 regular season were a career high for him. However, he would have a huge postseason, which included totaling 89 yards in the NFC wildcard round and 98 yards in the divisional round. Brown finished with 229 yards and a score while averaging 16.4 yards per catch over those three games, according to PFF. As GM James Gladstone said recently, the Jaguars certainly see an ascending player in Brown, and his skill set fits well with the direction this offense is headed under Coen.
