NEW DELHI:The Centre has blocked at least 25 Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms for publishing obscene and vulgar content. The banned digital services--websites and applications--include Big Shots, Desiflix, NeonX VIP, Gulab App, Kangan App, Hulchul App, MoodX, Ullu and ALTT. The action has been taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, MeitY, Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA), and industry bodies such as FICCI and CII, and experts in the field of women rights and child rights. "Utilising the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021, notifications have been issued to the various intermediaries to ensure that access to the concerned websites and apps is disabled," said officials. According to the officials, the nature of Content available on these platforms includes sexual innuendos and, in some cases, long portions of sexually explicit scenes involving nudity, thereby being pornographic in nature. "There was hardly any storyline, theme or message in a social context. A large portion of the content was obscene and vulgar. Depiction of nudity and sex in several inappropriate contexts including the relationships such as family relationships, of the platforms in violation of section 67 of the IT Act, section 292 of the IPC, and section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. Some platforms published sexually explicit content in violation of Section 67A of the IT Act," officials added.

The government has banned several popular streaming applications, including Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, Big Shots, and others, citing concerns over the streaming of obscene and sexually explicit to official sources, the decision was taken after these platforms were found to be hosting and distributing content described by authorities as 'soft porn', which violated the country's IT Rules and existing obscenity Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) acted on multiple complaints and reports indicating that the apps were allegedly circulating adult content under the guise of "erotic web series" without adequate content ban is aimed to curb the easy availability of pornographic material, particularly to minors, and to ensure that digital content remains within the bounds of decency and the March, the ministry had also banned 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles of 18 OTT platforms for publishing obscene and vulgar OTT platforms included Dreams Films, Neon X VIP, MoodX, Besharams, Voovi, Mojflix, Yessma, Hunters, Hot Shots VIP, Fugi, Uncut Adda, Rabbit, Tri Flicks, Xtramood, Chikooflix, X Prime, Nuefliks and Prime Play. "The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has taken action in coordination with various intermediaries, to block 18 OTT platforms publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content. 19 websites, 10 apps (7 on Google Play Store, 3 on Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms have been disabled for public access in India," the I&B Ministry had said. an official statement."Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Shri Anurag Singh Thakur has repeatedly emphasized the responsibility of the platforms to not propagate obscenity, vulgarity and abuse under the guise of 'creative expression'.
