2025 Big Ten men's tournament begins in Indianapolis
With the women's tournament wrapped, the men of the Big Ten are preparing to hit the hardwood at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The big picture: This year's Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament is the first since UCLA, USC, Washington and Oregon joined the fray in 2024. That shakeup proved to be a foundation breaker on the women's side, with UCLA claiming the tournament crown over USC Sunday afternoon in a battle of the newcomers. Why it matters: Both Purdue and IU made the cut for the tournament that now only invites the top 15 teams in the conference, giving local hoops fans plenty of reasons to tune in. State of play: The Boilermakers want to make a strong showing and carry that momentum into a hopeful return to the NCAA Championship Game. The Hoosiers, meanwhile, will look to take advantage of the tournament to battle from the bottom half of the Big Ten standings and straight into March Madness. Driving the news: The action kicks off Wednesday afternoon with Northwestern versus Minnesota, Iowa versus Ohio State and USC versus Rutgers. Indiana plays Oregon at 12pm Thursday. Purdue faces the winner of USC and Rutgers late Thursday. The game is slated to begin 25 minutes after the 6:30pm game between Illinois and the winner of the Ohio State vs. Iowa game. Zoom in: Here are some storylines that will define the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis. 🚂 Boilers battle back The Boilermakers fell victim to tiebreakers and ended up the No. 6 seed as they shared fourth place in the conference. But this is the fifth straight year Purdue has finished in the top four. The backcourt is the big reason for their success this season, and Braden Smith is one of five finalists for the 2025 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year award. ⛹️ Spartans on the attack No. 1 seed Michigan State claimed the 2024-25 Big Ten Men's Basketball championship with its 91-84 win at Iowa last week. This is Michigan State's 17th Big Ten championship and the 11th for head coach Tom Izzo, who is now tied for the most in conference history alongside Indiana legend Bob Knight. 📣 New kids UCLA claimed the No. 4 seed in its inaugural Big Ten season, closing their regular season with a 90-63 win over rival and fellow Big Ten newbies USC. The Bruins enter the tournament with the Big Ten's top scoring defense which gives up just 65.1 points per game. 🙏 Hoosier hope The IU men come into the tournament as a No. 9 seed and a winnable first game against No. 8 Oregon. They know this will be the final run with coach Mike Woodson calling the shots, so look for them to try to make a statement. How to watch: First-round games will stream live on Peacock. Oregon Ducks seed set for Big Ten Tournament
The Oregon Ducks' seed in the 2025 Big Ten Men's Basketball tournament has been set. Following the Illinois Fighting Illini's win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday night, the Ducks have been locked into the No. 8 seed for the upcoming conference tournament. Oregon will now face the No. 9 seed—an opponent yet to be decided. It will be either the Ohio State Buckeyes or Indiana Hoosiers who face Oregon, with the winner of that game on Saturday afternoon determining the matchup. The Ducks have wins over the Buckeyes and Hoosiers this season. Oregon's first-round Big Ten tournament game will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. PT at Gainbrdge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It will be aired on the Big Ten Network. The winner of that first-round game will advance to face the No. 1 seed Michigan State Spartans in the conference tournament quarterfinals on Friday (9 a.m., BTN). No. 14 Michigan State ends No. 12 Michigan's 12-game home winning streak to move atop Big Ten
One of the most anticipated Michigan-Michigan State games in recent memory ended with Tom Izzo and the Spartans one step closer to another Big Ten championship. No. 14 Michigan State beat No. 12 Michigan 75-62 on Friday night, handing the Wolverines their first home loss and moving into first place in the conference standings at 13-3. Michigan (20-6) now sits a half-game behind at 12-3. Advertisement The Wolverines have been one of the best stories in the Big Ten this season, their first under coach Dusty May. Friday, they ran into an old nemesis in Izzo, who passed Bob Knight to set the record for Big Ten coaching victories earlier this season. The Spartans played their usual stifling defense and held Michigan scoreless over the final four minutes, quieting a sellout crowd at the Crisler Center, where the Wolverines were 12-0 before Friday's loss. 'They were able to answer every run,' said May, who agreed to a new five-year contract at Michigan before the game. 'They were the aggressor. Tonight we didn't look like a championship-caliber program.' Michigan State entered the game as one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the nation but hit some big 3s against Michigan, including three in a row by Tre Holloman in the second half as the Spartans built their lead. The Spartans play host to Wisconsin, one of the Big Ten's hottest teams, on March 2 and finish the regular season at home against Michigan. They also play road games against Maryland and Iowa. With two weeks to play, Izzo's 11th Big Ten championship is there for the taking. Michigan isn't eliminated in the Big Ten race, but the margin for error is slim. The Wolverines have tough games at home against Illinois and Maryland before their trip to East Lansing to close the regular season. Advertisement Michigan State was just outside the top 16 when the NCAA selection committee released its projections for the top four seeds in each region last week. Michigan made the cut at No. 14 and was projected as a No. 4 seed. The Wolverines aren't likely to drop far, and the Spartans should climb after beating Purdue and Michigan in the span of four days.
