Vinayak Samant named Bihar head coach for next season

Former Mumbai wicketkeeper-turned-coach Vinayak Samant will be the head coach of Bihar for the upcoming domestic season. This news comes in light of 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi 's exploits in IPL 2025. Samant was Mumbai's head coach for two seasons, from 2018 to 2020. He was also the fielding coach at the Assam Cricket Association's cricket academy in the 2023-24 season. The former stumper, who played 101 first-class matches for Mumbai and Tripura before retiring in 2011, was known as a gutsy cricketer. Samant coached the Mumbai Under-23 team to the Col CK Nayudu Trophy title in the 2023-24 season and is currently the batting coach of Belgium, which is playing in the European League. "Yes, I've joined Bihar as their head coach. I'm looking forward to working with some exciting talent there and contributing to the development of Bihar cricket ," Samant told Mumbai Mirror from Brussels. Commenting on the chance to coach Suryavanshi, who smashed a sensational 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans in the IPL, Samant said, "He's a phenomenal talent, as we all saw in the IPL. He's too young at the moment, and I don't want to curb his natural game, but yes, I'll be looking to guide him in making minor adjustments in improving his red-ball match, so that he can perform well in the Ranji Trophy too," the 52-year-old said. Samant was appointed for the job by former Mumbai cricketer and selector Anand Yalvigi, who is currently the Director — Game Development & Operations of the Bihar Cricket Association . "When I was appointed as the director of the BCA, I wanted a coach who has worked at different levels. Vinayak has worked at the grassroots level and also with the state teams. He has himself come through the grassroots. Most importantly, he was the head coach of the Mumbai team, which is a big credential. He's somebody who played 101 first-class matches, so he has tremendous experience. Also, I've played with Vinayak since my childhood. So, I'm aware of his brilliant commitment and dedication levels. He will help Bihar to develop their cricket in the coming season," said Yalvigi. "The face of Bihar cricket is changing. We want to involve the best of coaches and selectors to hone the emerging talent of Bihar. As part of this process, we are getting new people on board for Bihar cricket," said Bihar Cricket Association President Rakesh Tiwary from Patna. Samant will be making his maiden trip to Patna in Bihar later this month, as the BCA plans to launch its inaugural T20 league next month. "I could never go to Bihar as a player, so this will be a new experience for me," he said.

Ghavri, Ankola impressed with young talent in Bihar

The first day of the second phase of "Search for Bowlers" trials, organized by Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), was successfully conducted at Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna on Friday under the watchful eyes of former cricketers Karsan Ghavri and Salil Ankola . Both took part in the selection process to assess the skills of budding talents from across the state. Out of more than 400 participants, a total of 76 bowlers were shortlisted on the day, including 65 male and 11 female bowlers. "These children have so much potential that they can progress significantly. It's not necessary that only 20 children have talent; the others also have good abilities and can advance. However, the game isn't the same as it used to be. It involves discipline, hard-work, and playing lots of matches. Every player needs to be a performer," Ghavri said on the sidelines of scouting event. "Many good players can be seen at the nets, but the true player is the one who performs well under pressure during a match. The initiative taken by BCA is a great step and it will be very beneficial in the future. The selected children will also ensure that you have fast bowlers and spinners in the pipeline, so you won't need to search elsewhere," added Ghavri, who has played 39 Tests. Former India selector Ankola also highlighted the advancement of scope and opportunity these days. "Talented bowlers need to work hard, and if they get a chance, it opens a path for them. It helps to understand how we grew up. In the late 1980s, we were like 18 or 19 years old, and there wasn't much available. We didn't know what to do. We used to chop wood and do things ourselves. We didn't realize how proper training was done," said Ankola. The final selection of players will take place during the concluding trial scheduled on Saturday. The final phase, which was originally scheduled to be held on May 11 and 12, was postponed for the safety of players, officials, and all stakeholders in the aftermath of the India-Pakistan conflict following the Pahalgam terror attack.

BCA postpones scouting event

Even as India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday that was later violated by Pakistan, Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) decided to postpone the final phase of the statewide bowlers' scouting programme scheduled for May 11 and 12 until further notice. The new dates for the final programme will be announced later. "Due to the current international situation and heightened security concerns in the country, the final phase of the programme scheduled for May 11 and 12 has been postponed until further notice. This decision was made prioritizing the safety of players, officials, and all stakeholders," BCA said in a statement issued on Saturday evening."The decision was unanimously made in an emergency meeting chaired by BCA president Rakesh Tiwari, taking into account reports and advice provided by security agencies. BCA appeals to participants, selectors, technical staff, and spectators to accept this temporary decision in a spirit of cooperation. As soon as conditions normalize, new dates for the postponed program will be announced on the official website and through other channels," the statement added. Meanwhile, the 'Bowler Hunt', originally scheduled for May 9-12, successfully conducted the district-wise trials on Friday and Saturday at Moin-ul Haq Stadium in Patna, where thousands of youngsters from across the state showcased their talent. The campaign, organised to identify fast and spin bowling talents across Bihar, have received an overwhelming response with a total of 3993 applicants submitting their candidature. Former India internationals Salil Ankola and Venkatapathy Raju are to oversee the final selection process.
