City police starts probe against singer booked for sedition
1 2 3 Lucknow: The Lucknow police launched a probe on Monday against Bhojpuri folk singer Neha Singh Rathore after a case was registered against her for allegedly making objectionable remarks on social media about the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. She has been booked for sedition , attempting to promote sectarian animosity & disturbing public tranquillity. Section 152 of BNS doesn't explicitly mention sedition, but deals with endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India. Deputy commissioner of police (Central Zone) Ashish Srivastava said that police wrote to platform X (formerly Twitter) seeking details of the account @NehaSinghRathore. A cyber cell team is also assisting in the investigation. Hazratganj SHO Vikram Singh said the complainant, Abhay Pratap Singh alias Abhay Singh 'Nirbhik', was called to record his statement and submit supporting evidence. The FIR, lodged at Hazratganj police station on Sunday, alleges that Rathore's posts were not only inappropriate but also anti-national. The complainant claimed that her remarks were picked up by Pakistani media outlets and praised for criticising India, thus harming the country's image internationally. Based on the complaint, an FIR under charges including sedition was registered. In response, Rathore released a 1-minute 24-second video on X on Monday, accusing the Modi govt of diverting attention from security failures by targeting critics. The complaint, filed by Abhay Pratap Singh, claims Ms Rathore used her social media accounts to make "anti-national statements" and accuses her of stoking communal tensions. Family members of multiple victims of the attack in Baisaran valley in Pahalgam on April 22 have said the terrorists went to each of them and asked about their religion. Those who said they were Hindu were shot dead. Who is Neha Singh Rathore? Neha Singh Rathore is a political satirist and a folk singer known for composing songs in Bhojpuri. She was born in 1997 and raised in Jandaha, Bihar. She received her (Bachelor of Science) degree from Kanpur University in 2018. In 2019, Rathore started her career as a composer and singer of Bhojpuri folk songs. She began recording songs on her phone and uploading them to Facebook. Ms Rathore has cited Bhojpuri poets Bhikhari Thakur and Mahendar Misir as her inspirations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she created a YouTube channel in May 2020 to raise awareness about the impact of the lockdown on migrant workers.
