Odisha man gets life imprisonment for raping, killing minor
JAJPUR: A Jajpur court on Saturday handed life sentence to a scrap shop owner charged with rape and murder of a five-year-old girl nine years back. Additional district and sessions Judge of Jajpur Bijay Kumar Jena also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict Sheik Mohit. The court directed the district legal service authority to provide Rs 5 lakh compensation to the victim's mother. The court examined the testimony of 25 witnesses before pronouncing the verdict. According to the police, the incident took place in 2016 when the victim visited a scrap shop owned by Mohit near ferro chrome plant on Jajpur Road to sell some glass bottles. Finding her alone, Mohit sexually assaulted her and strangled her to death to destroy evidence. He then stuffed the body in a sack and dumped it on the railway track near Jajpur Road railway station. Basing on the complaint filed by the deceased family, the Jajpur Road police investigated the case, arrested the accused and produced him in the local court.

Man gets life term for rape and murder of 5-year-old girl
1 2 3 Kendrapada: Ad hoc additional district and sessions-cum-fast-track special court in Jajpur on Saturday sentenced a 41-year-old scrap dealer to rigorous imprisonment for life for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in 2016. Judge Bijay Kumar Jena convicted the man under sections 376(2i), 302 and 201 of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, with an additional six months of imprisonment if he defaults. According to the prosecution, on Jan 3, 2016, the girl visited the convict's shop to sell empty bottles. Taking advantage of her being alone, he dragged her inside, sexually assaulted her and threatened to harm her family if she revealed the crime to anyone. When the girl threatened to tell her parents, he strangled her to death and disposed of her body in a sack near the railway line. The crime came to light the following day when locals reported a foul smell emanating from a sack near the tracks. Police investigation led to the man's arrest after witnesses reported seeing him carrying a sack from his godown. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime. Special public prosecutor Rajendra Prasad Nayak said that while the prosecution pushed for capital punishment considering it a "rarest of rare" case, the court maintained that the case did not meet the criteria for death penalty. The court has directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased's mother. The verdict was based on testimonies from 35 witnesses and 15 documents, including the post-mortem report.

Man sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment for raping & killing college student
Kendrapada: The ad hoc additional district and sessions judge, (fast track special court), Jajpur has sentenced a 31-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment on Saturday for raping and murdering a 17-year-old college student, whose body was found in a septic tank of a govt school in 2016 at a village in Jajpur district. The court also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 on the convict and failure to pay that amount would result in his sentence being increased by six months. Pronouncing the verdict in the case, judge Bijay Kumar Jena sentenced the man to life imprisonment under Sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, on charges of kidnapping, raping and murdering the minor girl nine years ago. The victim, whose father was a peon at a local school, was a student of Plus II Arts. As per the chargesheet filed by police, on Jan 3, 2016, the convict kidnapped the girl and took her to the school where he raped and murdered her. He then dumped the body in the septic tank. Once her parents identified the body, police launched an investigation and on Jan 7, 2016, he was arrested. Before dumping the body, he stole the gold ornaments the victim was wearing. He also stole her ATM card with which he withdrew money later that night at Jajpur road. Police scanned through the CCTV footage of the ATM booth which helped in tracking him down. As many as 40 witnesses deposed in the case in the court. "After relying on the evidence of the witnesses, 12 documents, including the postmortem report, and 10 material objects, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to rigorous life imprisonment," Rajendra Prasad Nayak, the special public prosecutor of the court, said. "We argued before the court to give capital punishment to the convict. But the court stated that this case does not come under the purview of the 'rarest of the rare' case category and rejected our plea," Nayak added.
