Kendrapada: Ad hoc additional district and sessions-cum-fast-track special court in Jajpur on Saturday sentenced a 41-year-old scrap dealer to rigorous imprisonment for life for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in 2016.
Judge Bijay Kumar Jena convicted the man under sections 376(2i), 302 and 201 of the IPC and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, with an additional six months of imprisonment if he defaults.
According to the prosecution, on Jan 3, 2016, the girl visited the convict's shop to sell empty bottles. Taking advantage of her being alone, he dragged her inside, sexually assaulted her and threatened to harm her family if she revealed the crime to anyone.
When the girl threatened to tell her parents, he strangled her to death and disposed of her body in a sack near the railway line.
The crime came to light the following day when locals reported a foul smell emanating from a sack near the tracks. Police investigation led to the man's arrest after witnesses reported seeing him carrying a sack from his godown. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
Special public prosecutor Rajendra Prasad Nayak said that while the prosecution pushed for capital punishment considering it a "rarest of rare" case, the court maintained that the case did not meet the criteria for death penalty.
The court has directed the Odisha State Legal Services Authority to provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased's mother. The verdict was based on testimonies from 35 witnesses and 15 documents, including the post-mortem report.

Towel, Shaver & Australian Address: Courier For Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi Raises Alarm
The parcel, reportedly sent by a woman, may have been a test run to check whether a delivery could successfully reach Bishnoi inside the high-security jail A mysterious parcel from Australia, addressed to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi at Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat, has triggered concern among Indian security agencies. The package was intercepted at a foreign post office in Gujarat, which handles international shipments to and from the state, and has since become the subject of a multi-agency probe. The parcel was reportedly sent under the name Vandana Gaur, with an address in Australia that is now believed to be fake, according to intelligence sources. Curiously, the contents of the package—a towel and a strong shaver—were ordinary, which only deepened suspicions. Officials are questioning why someone would send such commonplace items from abroad, suggesting the parcel may have been a test run to check whether a delivery could successfully reach Bishnoi inside the high-security jail. What has further raised eyebrows is the fact that the sender reportedly paid around Rs 7,000 as international parcel charges, a considerable sum given the low value and easily available nature of the contents. This has added to suspicions that the shipment may have had an ulterior motive beyond what is visible. This isn't the first time such an attempt has been made. Sources say a similar incident occurred earlier in a different state, pointing to a possible pattern. Meanwhile, in a related crackdown, the Rajasthan Police's Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has arrested Aditya Jain, a key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi–Rohit Godara gang, from Dubai. Jain is accused of acting as a 'control room" for the gang—coordinating extortion rackets and issuing threat calls on behalf of the network. Bishnoi, despite being lodged in Sabarmati Jail, continues to operate his criminal syndicate using VPNs and mobile phones, according to investigators. His name has come up in several high-profile cases, including the murder of Sidhu Moose Wala, threats to actor Salman Khan, the killing of a gym owner in South Delhi, and most recently, the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique. Born into a well-off agricultural family in Dhattaranwali village in Punjab's Ferozepur district, Bishnoi belongs to the Bishnoi community, prevalent in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. He moved to Chandigarh in 2010 for college, where he joined DAV College and later became president of the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) from 2011 to 2012, marking the beginning of his descent into organised crime. Milk, Marriage, And A Vanishing Bride: Agra Man Falls Victim To Elaborate Scam
Last Updated: On the wedding night, the bride gave Rinku a glass of milk. By morning, he and his mother were unconscious, and the bride had fled with the house's cash and jewellery A shocking case of fraud has surfaced in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, leaving locals stunned. A man named Rinku, who had hoped for a happy married life, was left betrayed and drugged on his wedding night. The incident occurred on May 4, when Rinku, son of Kusuma Devi, married a woman named Atima. The match was arranged by a middleman, who reportedly took Rs 1.20 lakh to finalise the wedding. The ceremony was held at a temple in Nagla Padi. On the wedding night, the bride went to the kitchen and returned with a glass of milk for Rinku. She told him, 'Wait, I'm coming." The next morning, both Rinku and his mother were found unconscious. Jewellery and cash from the house were missing—and so was the bride. Groom's Courage Exposes Fraud Instead of giving in to despair, Rinku and his family began their own investigation. They grew suspicious of the 'aunt' and 'uncle' who had posed as the bride's relatives during the wedding. After several days of searching in the Nagla Padi area, they identified the suspects and alerted the police. The accused, Sunita and Rajendra, were arrested. During interrogation, they admitted that they had no real relation to the bride. They were paid by the middleman to pose as her aunt and uncle to make the wedding appear legitimate. Local witnesses also confirmed that the two mingled and interacted with guests to make their presence seem genuine. Middleman The Mastermind According to the victim's family, the middleman, who lives in the Trans-Yamuna area, masterminded the entire plot. They allege that they had informed the police about him early on, but action was delayed. Rinku was even attacked during this time, prompting a separate FIR. Frustrated by police inaction, the family approached BJP MLA Dr Dharampal Singh. It was only after his intervention that the police took swift action, registered a case, and arrested the fake relatives. Efforts are now underway to track down the bride. Police say her arrest is expected soon. First Published: June 02, 2025, 10:05 IST
