Michael Shannon Joins David Corenswet in Skydance Sports' John Tuggle Biopic as Coach Bill Parcells — GeekTyrant

Michael Shannon is stepping into a new kind of iconic role as he has signed on to play legendary NFL coach Bill Parcells in an upcoming football drama from Skydance Sports. The film centers on the remarkable true story of former New York Giants running back John Tuggle, best known for being the final pick of the 1983 NFL draft, earning the nickname 'Mr. Irrelevant.' Joining Shannon is Superman star David Corenswet, who will portray Tuggle, and 1883 's Isabel May. The project is being helmed by director Jonathan Levine ( Warm Bodies , 50/50 ) with a screenplay by Emmy-nominated writer Nick Santora ( Reacher , Prison Break ). Skydance Sports is shaping the film to tell a heartfelt and inspiring account of Tuggle's brief but powerful NFL career and the lasting impact he had on his team. As head coach of the Giants at the time, Parcells was instrumental in giving Tuggle a shot. Shannon's portrayal will explore the dynamic between the gruff, no-nonsense coach and the determined underdog running back he championed. Tuggle's story stands in stark contrast to today's most famous 'Mr. Irrelevant,' Brock Purdy, who recently led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. But Tuggle's legacy predates Purdy's rise and strikes a deeper emotional chord. The original 'Mr. Irrelevant' title was coined in 1976 by USC receiver Paul Salata, who founded Irrelevant Week as a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the draft's final pick. While most of those players fade into obscurity, a few like Tuggle end up redefining the label in unforgettable ways. Shannon, who recently earned acclaim for his performance as George Jones in Showtime's George & Tammy , is on a roll when it comes to portraying real-life figures. He's also set to appear as President James Garfield in Netflix's upcoming limited series Death By Lightning . Now, with Parcells, he'll tackle a very different kind of American legend. No release date has been set yet, but with Shannon leading the charge and a powerhouse creative team behind it, this one's already looking like a play worth watching. Source: Deadline

Knicks can't count on there being a next best shot at this

The Knicks were built to take multiple bites at this apple, to spend multiple springs trying to add a third banner to Madison Square Garden's pinwheeled ceiling. They aren't one-hit wonders, and shouldn't be going forward, assuming they stay reasonably healthy. This is a core designed to maintain a distinct level of competence, and confidence. That's the idea, anyway. Advertisement The reality can sometimes be quite different, because you never really know in sports, not completely, not entirely. Stuff happens. Guys get hurt, guys get old. Coaches wear out their welcome, chemistry fades. You are never guaranteed a thing. It is always wise to go back to January 1999, in crumbling old Mile High Stadium in Denver, maybe 45 minutes after the Jets lost the AFC Championship game to Denver 23-10. 'Nobody promises you anything,' Bill Parcells said, standing outside the visitor's locker room, his face gaunt, his shoulders slumped; he looked to be about 113 years old. 'Just thinking of all that has to happen just to get back to right here … it's exhausting.'

Aside from the obvious, this is what Jets fans desperately need from new regime

We're about to enter another one of those Jets years where the question will be: What does a successful season look like? I don't think even the most optimistic Jets fan looks at the 2025 right now and thinks 'Super Bowl contender.' Ending the 14-year playoff drought is a great goal but an ambitious one when you consider the gap the Jets have to close in their own division and with strong wild-card contenders in the AFC West and North. This feels like a reset year with new coach Aaron Glenn implementing his culture and evaluating the players on the team to see who fits and who does not with what he wants. Think 1997 with Bill Parcells when they went 9-7 and laid the groundwork for the playoff run in 1998. But there is one area outside of wins and losses and playoff berths where I think the Jets can show improvement and this could feel like a major step forward – can they have a functional offense for once?

Julian Edelman elected to Patriots Hall of Fame

The Patriots have announced the latest addition to their Hall of Fame. Wide receiver Julian Edelman won a fan vote to become the 37th inductee into the Hall. The Patriots previously announced that former head coach Bill Parcells will also be inducted this year. Advertisement Edelman was a seventh-round pick out of Kent State in 2009 and moved from quarterback to receiver once joining New England. He played his entire 12-year career with the team and won three Super Bowls while also being named the MVP of Super Bowl LIII. "Julian Edelman is one of the great success stories in our franchise's history," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said in a statement. "There aren't many players who earn an NFL roster spot at a position they have never played before. Julian not only did that as a seventh-round draft selection, but he finished his career with the second-most receptions in franchise history and as a three-time Super Bowl Champion, including his last as Super Bowl MVP. No one was more committed to his craft and honing his skills than Jules. His explosiveness off the line, quickness in his cuts and elusiveness after the catch made him one of the hardest players to defend. His clutch catches in our biggest games and overall toughness made him a fan favorite." Kicker Adam Vinatieri and guard Logan Mankins were the other finalists for this year's fan vote.

Bill Parcells heading into Patriots Hall of Fame -- what took so long? Julian Edelman will become the 37th member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame this summer, the team announced on Monday. Edelman was selected as the winner of the fan vote, beating out Adam Vinatieri and Logan Mankins. Patriots Hall of Fame results To be eligible for the team's Hall of Fame, candidates must be at least four years removed from their playing or coaching career. Vinatieri and Edelman were both finalists for the first time, having retired in 2021. Mankins was a finalist in 2022 and 2023. There was no traditional Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony last year. Instead, the team honored Tom Brady with a capacity event inside Gillette Stadium, as Robert Kraft announced that no one would ever wear the No. 12 again. Julian Edelman selected to Patriots Hall of Fame Edelman spent his entire career with the Patriots after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft as a wide receiver, despite playing quarterback at Kent State. In 12 years with New England, Edelman racked up 620 receptions and 6,822 yards to go with 36 receiving touchdowns. It was the postseason where Edelman made some of his biggest plays. He had 118 catches in the playoffs and 1,442 postseason receiving yards. Edelman won three Super Bowls with the Patriots. Edelman's catches regularly came in the moments when Tom Brady needed him the most. He had the eventual game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seahawks, and a signature fingertip catch against the Atlanta Falcons to help New England erase a 28-3 deficit and win Super Bowl LI. Two years later in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams, Edelman was named MVP with 10 receptions for 141 yards. Edelman shared a video on social media of him telling his father the news. Earlier this year, Patriots owner Robert Kraft also announced that Bill Parcells will be inducted into this Hall of Fame as a contributor during the ceremony this summer.
