Of these five artists, only Toronto artist/poet Mustafa has previous experience of a Polaris-related short list, via a 2021 nomination for the Polaris Music Prize for his debut release, When Smoke Rises. An interesting facet of this short list is that all five of the artists listed are also on the 10 album short list for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize. As a result, they will all be performing at the Polaris Concert & Award Ceremony, at Toronto's Massey Hall on Tuesday, September 16. Both Prizes will be awarded at that event. As with the Polaris Music Prize, the Song Prize is voted on by the members of the Polaris jury without regard to musical genre, label affiliation or commercial popularity. The SOCAN Polaris Song Prize is the organization's first new award since the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize was introduced in 2015 to award albums from the pre-Polaris Prize era. The launch of the Song Prize is part of an extensive initiative of programming changes announced for the organization's 20th anniversary. Tickets for the Polaris Concert & Award Ceremony are on sale now via the Massey Hall website. This article was originally published by Billboard Canada. Daniel Caesar Talks Working With ‘Genius' Tyler, the Creator, Says Justin Bieber ‘Can Sing His A– Off'

Daniel Caesar has an impressive list of collaborators on his resumé, from Tyler, the Creator to Justin Bieber. And in his Billboard cover story published Thursday (July 24), the R&B singer-songwriter opened up about what it's like to work with both superstars. Starting with his fellow Canadian, Caesar had only kind things to say about the Biebs. After they scored a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with collaboration 'Peaches' in 2021, the pair reunited on the pop star's 'Devotion' off new album Swag. 'He's also so open and kind and generous. I can spot a fellow Canadian when I see one.' On working with Tyler on Chromakopia, for which the rapper entrusted Caesar with giving notes on production, the latter said, 'I felt like, 'Who am I to tell you what you should do?'' 'He's a genius,' Caesar added of Tyler. 'He's such an important voice for our generation.' The love goes both ways. 'I think he knows he's so f–king ill now,' Tyler told Billboard of the singer, who is credited on several Chromakopia tracks. 'I think he kind of knew it … but now he's walking around like, 'Yes, my d–k is 15 inches.' That's that energy.' Caesar's cover story comes one day ahead of new song 'Have a Baby (With Me),' which will serve as the lead single to upcoming album Son of Spergy. The Oshawa native hasn't dropped an LP since 2023's Never Enough, which reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200 — Caesar's highest peak on the chart to date. On Son of Spergy, Caesar told Billboard that his next full-length is 'about religion, but more importantly, it's about my father.' 'In your childhood, your father is a lot like God,' he added. 'He's the person you fear the most on earth and also the person whose love and respect you desire more than anyone else on earth. It's the source from where all your blessings come.' Diljit Dosanjh – now part of syllabus in Canadian University; highlighting his impact on ‘global pop culture'

Diljit Dosanjh , who is an actor and singer, has added another achievement to his list. He will now be a part of the syllabus at the Toronto Metropolitan University in Canada. This course will be offered through The Creative School at the university and was announced at the Billboard Summit at NXNE in Toronto. Statement of Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews In a statement to Billboard Canada Dr. Andrews said 'His rise illustrates the cultural influence and economic potential of Punjabi music on the world stage. Students will explore how regional sounds shape global pop culture, mobilise diasporic communities, and contribute to sustainable creative economies rooted in authenticity.' 'His journey stands for cultural pride' For Dosanjh's manager, Sonali Singh, who serves as CEO of Ripple Effects, the announcement represents more than just academic recognition. 'His journey stands for cultural pride, creative freedom, and global representation for Punjabi and South Asian communities,' she told Billboard Canada. 'Seeing his impact formally recognised in an academic space is not only powerful; it's long overdue.' 'Mo Ghoneim,' President of Billboard UK and Canada, also praised the move. 'He represents the very heart of this global movement, and we're excited to see his story enter the classroom,' he added. Banned cinema but better news The announcement came just hours before Dosanjh's new film, 'Sardaar Ji 3,' was confirmed for a release only in foreign countries on June 27, with the trailer getting blocked in India. The move has instigated massive waves online. The netizens are accusing the actor of betraying national sentiment due to the film's casting of Pakistani actors like Hania Aamir, Nasir Chinyoti, and Daniel Khawar, especially in the situation where India-Pakistan tensions are at a heightened emotion after the Pahalgam terror attack in April.

The announcement was made at the Billboard Summit at NXNE in Toronto. The course is set to launch in late 2026. 'Toronto Metropolitan University is excited to pioneer a course on Diljit Dosanjh, whose journey embodies the intersection of culture, identity and global music entrepreneurship," says Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews, Assistant Professor at The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University. "His rise illustrates the cultural influence and economic potential of Punjabi music on the world stage. Sonali Singh, CEO of Ripple Effects and Business Manager of Diljit Dosanjh, had shared, 'His journey represents far more than commercial success. It stands for cultural pride, creative freedom, and global representation for Punjabi and South Asian communities. Seeing his impact formally recognized in an academic space is not only powerful; it's long overdue.' This announcement comes amid the controversy surrounding Dosanjh's yet-to-be-released movie 'Sardaar Ji 3,' which casts Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The All Indian Cine Workers Association has criticized Dosanjh and his team for casting the Pakistani actress, as reported by PTI. "This decision comes at a time when the entire nation—140 crore Indians, the government, the opposition, and citizens across all walks of life—are united against Pakistan and standing in solidarity with the families of the martyred," the organisation said in a statement. Hania Aamir's presence in the movie has led social media users to call for a boycott of the movie. Dosanjh is currently on his 'Dil-Luminati' tour and is scheduled to perform in France, the UK, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands later this year.
