Lorde Says Her Met Gala Look Is an ‘Easter Egg': Here's What It Represents

Lorde attended her first Met Gala in four years Monday (May 5), but she wasn't just there for fun. According to the pop star, she also used the event to tease something coming in the future, revealing that the look she wore on the red carpet is an 'Easter egg' that also happens to express how she's feeling in terms of her gender identity. While speaking to Vogue correspondent Emma Chamberlain on the carpet ahead of the event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Lorde was eager to show off her custom Thom Browne getup. Twirling around in a shiny slate skirt, suit jacket and gravity-defying strip of fabric that covered her chest, the 'Green Light' singer pointed out her favorite parts of the look. 'This is my creation,' she began. 'It's something of an Easter egg. More will be revealed.' Lorde then told Chamberlain, 'I just love the open back.' 'To me it really represents where I'm at gender-wise,' she added. 'I feel like a man and a woman, kind of vibe.' The event comes less than a week after Lorde announced her fourth studio album, Virgin, meaning fans have both a lot of music to look forward to as well as ample room to start decoding by way of Easter eggs. The New Zealand native has previously teased that the LP will find her exploring her relationship to gender, telling the Document Journal in a recent interview that she composed the project during a period of time in which she started to 'feel [her] gender broadening a little bit.' Lorde last dropped an album in 2021, with Solar Power bowing at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. That year was also the last time she attended a Met Gala, dressing in a sun goddess-esque look for the theme 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.' This year, she and countless other stars on the 2025 guest list dressed for the theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' which focused on 'the role of sartorial style in forming Black identities' and the 'proliferation of the Black dandy.' Diana Ross Brings Showstopping White Train to 2025 Met Gala Red Carpet

Diana Ross brought the 2025 Met Gala red carpet to a halt on Monday night (May 5), wearing an epic jacket with a seemingly endless train that spread almost the entire width of the iconic steps leading into the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Ross revealed to Vogue livestream host La La Anthony that she was persuaded to attend Monday night's Met Gala by her son, Evan Ross, after not coming to the event since 2003. She also revealed an Easter egg hiding beneath her train: she had the names of her five children and eight grandchildren stitched into the garment. Diana was joined by Evan for her Vogue interview, and daughter Tracee Ellis Ross was also in the building for the Met Gala. When Ross last attended the Met Costume Institute Gala in 2003, she was a vision in red, wearing a satin gown with delicate detailing at the neckline and a matching red satin shawl. The 2025 Met Gala theme is 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,' which also inspired the Costume Institute's spring 2025 exhibition of the same name and explores the history of Black dandyism. Ross is a musical legend, scoring 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 throughout her career, including six No. 1s: 'Endless Love' with Lionel Richie (nine weeks at No. 1), 'Upside Down' (four weeks), 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' (three weeks), 'Love Hangover' (two weeks), 'Touch Me in the Morning' and 'Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)' (one week apiece). Andre 3000 Carries Piano on His Back at 2025 Met Gala & Drops New Piano Album at the Same Time

Leave it to André 3000 to get the Met Gala red carpet buzzing and do some album promo at the same time. On Monday night (May 5), the Outkast legend showed up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute fundraiser with a baby grand piano strapped to his back, and at the same time, he surprise-dropped his latest instrumental album, called 7 piano sketches. More from Billboard Met Gala 2025: Best Photos From the Red Carpet 'The Blues Brothers' Return in First-Ever Graphic Novel See Madonna, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx & Lorde Squeeze In for Epic Met Gala Selfie The album was released at 8 p.m. ET via Epic Records, shortly after André arrived on the carpet wearing his piano look by Burberry, in collaboration with benji bixby and styled by Law Roach. (This marked the debut for benji bixby, which is the latest incarnation of André's late-'00s line Benjamin Bixby.) André's Met Gala look mimics the cover art of the new album. In a press release, André said the original title for the project was ''The Best Worst Rap Album In History' and here is an excerpt from the original liner notes: 'It's jokingly the worst rap album in history because there are no lyrics on it at all. It's the best because it's the free-est emotionally and best I've felt personally. It's the best because it's like a palette cleanser for me.'' 7 piano sketches is the follow-up to another instrumental project from André, the 2023 flute album New Blue Sun, which was nominated for album of the year at the 2025 Grammys, along with two other nods for the work. In November, André will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside bandmate Big Boi as part of Outkast. Listen to the new album and see André's full piano-inspired look below.
