One in nine girls, women and people assigned female at birth live with endometriosis, many of whom have to miss work, school, events and commitments due to flare-ups and complications. Bindi Irwin has been open about her battle with the often debilitating condition, and has shared a health update after she had to miss the annual Steve Irwin Gala, instead spending the night in the hospital. The 26-year-old went public with her diagnosis in early 2023, and has given followers updates on her personal struggles online since, as a way to help others feel less alone. She even received the EndoFound Blossom Award in 2024 for her work. The wildlife warrior posted a series of photos to Instagram, including one from a hospital bed. Irwin wrote she is 'healing' after previously revealing she had her appendix removed, 'along with 14 lesions (after having 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago)'. Surgeons also repaired a hernia she 'acquired through childbirth four years ago'. 'The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain.' Image: @bindisueirwin on Instagram Ever dedicated to raising awareness of life with endo, she thanked her followers for their support before writing, 'The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain.' 'This disease is crippling and can make you feel incredibly isolated. We need to raise awareness and change the narrative for women's health. I see you, your pain is real, and you deserve answers and genuine health care', she wrote, before linking to The Endometriosis Foundation of America (EndoFound). Irwin's family shared their support for the 26-year-old, with mum, Terri, commenting 'Thank you for sharing your journey.', while her husband of five years, Chandler Powell, wrote 'Thank you for always helping others.' Steve Irwin's eldest child has 'battled with endometriosis for more than 12 years', and dealt with 'insurmountable fatigue, pain & nausea', while being told these symptoms were 'simply something you deal with as a woman'. She also posted a video earlier this month, addressing her followers while still tired in her hospital bed just an hour after surgery, to share details of her health journey and thank her supporters. Bindi's husband Chandler has been looking after their four-year-old daughter Grace in Oregon while she recovered from her procedure. On Sunday, Chandler was seen enjoying some father-daughter time with Grace as they went for a walk to the local park. The pair were seen feeding the birds bread as they explored the area. Earlier this month, Bindi was rushed to hospital just hours after touching down in Las Vegas for a gala honouring her late father Steve Irwin. She suffered a ruptured appendix and was raced into surgery, missing the prestigious event which she was due to attend alongside brother Robert Irwin and mother Terri Irwin. Robert told People magazine at the time that Bindi was recovering and her mother is at her bedside. 'She's going to be okay, but surgery - out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them,' Robert explained. Terri also missed the event while accompanying her daughter to hospital and staying by her side through surgery. Robert explained that Bindi had been suffering some pain in the lead up to the gala but had tried to soldier on. 'She came to Las Vegas and was ready to put on a brave face. She said, 'I'm just going to tough it out.' 'But the surgeon told her, "Your appendix is going. It's got to come out".' In an Instagram post, Bindi revealed that while her appendix was removed, doctors discovered another 14 lesions from her endometriosis. These were also successfully removed. She also had a large hernia repaired which had developed after giving birth to daughter Grace in 2021.

Bindi Irwin seen in public for first time since undergoing harrowing emergency surgery
Bindi Irwin is on the road to recovery after a difficult few weeks. Spotted on her first public outing since she underwent emergency surgery in New York earlier this month, the 26-year-old was seen back on her feet and looking in good spirits on Monday as she arrived at Los Angeles International Airport from the Big Apple. With her mum Terri Irwin by her side, Bindi acknowledged photographers who appeared to wish her a speedy recovery as she made her way to a waiting car outside the terminal. Despite her recent hospitalisation, the Aussie conservationist was strong enough to tote her own carry-on bag while dressed in a relaxed maxidress for the cross-country journey. On Monday, Bindi also took to Instagram to tell her followers that she was on the mend following emergency surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York after suffering from a ruptured appendix. During the operation, doctors also found 14 new endometriosis lesions that had to be removed, and they also repaired a large hernia Bindi had acquired when she gave birth to her daughter Grace four years ago. 'Healing. Thank you for your incredible words of support and kindness,' she wrote on Instagram yesterday alongside some photos of her on the mend. 'The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain. I've battled with endometriosis for more than 12 years. 'This disease is crippling and can make you feel incredibly isolated,' she added of her condition in which the cells that line the uterus also grow in other parts of the body, which can cause painful scar tissue. 'We need to raise awareness and change the narrative for women's health. I see you, your pain is real, and you deserve answers and genuine health care.' Bindi had travelled to the US earlier this month with her mum and brother, Robert Irwin, to attend an annual gala for their late father Steve Irwin in Las Vegas. However, she didn't make the event after she was rushed to hospital on May 12. 'Hey guys, Bindi here. I just wanted to thank you so much for your incredible well wishes. I just got out of surgery about an hour ago,' she groggily said in an Instagram video shared at the time. 'I had my appendix removed. I also had 14 new endometriosis lesions that had to be removed and they kindly stitched up my hernia as well.' 'I'm sorry if I'm a little out of it in this video. But I just wanted you to know that I'm on the road to recovery one step at a time and I am so lucky to have so much love in my life from my beautiful family.' Robert, 21, held down the fort for Bindi at the gala in Las Vegas, but told reporters at the event that her hospitalisation had come as a shock to the family.

Bindi Irwin fights to be healthy for her family following emergency surgery
Bindi Irwin is on the road to recovery and taking the time to heal after suffering a ruptured appendix earlier this month. Irwin, the daughter of late animal advocate Steve Irwin, was forced to miss an annual gala in honor of her father due to emergency surgery. While the surgery was initially intended to address her appendix, doctors discovered a myriad of issues Irwin, 26, needed medical attention for, including 14 additional lesions related to her endometriosis diagnosis. "Healing. Thank you for your incredible words of support and kindness," Bindi shared on social media. "The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain. "I've battled with endometriosis for more than 12 years. This disease is crippling and can make you feel incredibly isolated. We need to raise awareness and change the narrative for women's health. I see you, your pain is real, and you deserve answers and genuine health care." Her husband, Chandler Powell, praised Bindi on social media, and wrote, "I've said it many times already, but as time goes on I'm even more convinced that you are the strongest person I know." He added, "Going through everything you have to get on top of your health as well as help others along the way is incredible. You are a warrior in every sense of the word. Grace and I are so grateful for you and everything you do." She responded, "My hope is to be healthy for our family. I love you so much." Irwin detailed some of her medical journey on social media shortly after she was hospitalized. "After having a grumbly appendix, I finally had to seek help the day of our Steve Irwin Gala in Las Vegas," she wrote earlier this month. "I consulted with Dr. Seckin, and we agreed that if I flew to New York, he could also check for endometriosis again. "Surgery was a success. My appendix was removed, along with another 14 lesions (after having 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago). I also had a repair to a large hernia I acquired through childbirth four years ago. Thankfully, I am on the road to recovery." This is not the first health scare Bindi has encountered. In 2023, the mom of one revealed an endometriosis diagnosis that also required surgery. "My life now looks completely different than it did before I had my surgery," Irwin told Fox News Digital at the time. "Over the 10 years that I was really battling with endo[metriosis] without knowing it, I would get progressively worse every week and in the end, before my surgery, I was barely able to get out of bed." Irwin, who described the pain she experienced as a "stabbing feeling" and "really scary," revealed in March that she endured the painful condition for 10 years and struggled for a proper diagnosis.

Bindi Irwin thanks fans for their support following medical emergency
Bindi Irwin is thanking fans for their support following her recent hospitalization. The 26-year-old conservationist, zookeeper and TV personality -- whose father is the late environmentalist and "Crocodile Hunter" star Steve Irwin -- underwent surgery earlier this month to remove her appendix and several endometriosis lesions. She was in Las Vegas at the time to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala on May 10, which raises funds to support wildlife conservation efforts, and was forced to bow out at the last minute after she experienced a ruptured appendix. In an Instagram video post on May 12, Irwin revealed she had flown to New York City to be treated by doctors at Lenox Hill Hospital, where her doctor, Dr. Tamer Seckin, a gynecologic surgeon, was also able to "check for endometriosis again." According to Irwin, her surgery was "a success." "My appendix was removed, along with another 14 lesions (after having 37 endometriosis lesions and a cyst removed two years ago)," she wrote in the caption at the time. "I also had a repair to a large hernia I acquired through childbirth four years ago. Thankfully, I am on the road to recovery." In a follow-up post on Sunday, Irwin thanked her followers for supporting her throughout the ordeal and opened up about the reason for her medical transparency. "Healing," she wrote alongside an carousel of images, including one of her posing in the rain with an umbrella. "Thank you for your incredible words of support and kindness." "The reason I share my health journey is because more girls and women desperately need answers to their undiagnosed pain," she continued. "I've battled with endometriosis for more than 12 years. This disease is crippling and can make you feel incredibly isolated." She added, "We need to raise awareness and change the narrative for women's health. I see you, your pain is real, and you deserve answers and genuine health care." Irwin has opened up previously about her health challenges. In 2023 she revealed that she had received a diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition the World Health Organization defines as "a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus," which can cause pelvic pain and/or infertility, and depression and/or anxiety, among other life-impacting symptoms. Irwin later underwent "extensive" surgery for the condition, during which she said doctors "found 37 lesions, some very deep and difficult to remove, and a chocolate cyst." "[Seckin's] first words to me when I was in recovery were, 'How did you live with this much pain?'" she recalled in a March 2023 Instagram post. "Validation for years of pain is indescribable." "I'm aware of millions of women struggling with a similar story," she added at the time. "There's stigma around this awful disease. I'm sharing my story for anyone who reads this & is quietly dealing with pain & no answers. Let this be your validation that your pain is real & you deserve help. Keep searching for answers." ABC News spoke to Seckin previously about the difficulty of diagnosing endometriosis. "It doesn't show up in any imaging, and there's no blood test. Only by laparoscopy ... by looking inside directly with a camera, we can diagnose endometriosis," Seckin said at the time. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, research suggests more than 11% of women between the ages of 15 and 44 may have endometriosis. The condition tends to be particularly common among women in their 30s and 40s and can make it difficult to get pregnant. In her March 2023 Instagram post, Irwin, who has a 4-year-old daughter named Grace, addressed those who had been speculating about whether she planned to have more children. "Please be gentle & pause before asking me (or any woman) when we'll be having more children," she wrote at the time. "After all that my body has gone through, I feel tremendously grateful that we have our gorgeous daughter. She feels like our family's miracle."
