Binghamton Firefighters say ‘farewell' to another brother

HILLCREST, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton firefighters gathered to say farewell to another comrade on Wednesday, continuing what has already been a very difficult year for the department. The funeral for fireman Scott Pavlick was held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Hillcrest. Pavlick died unexpectedly last week at the age of 47 from a medical condition. This comes just months after fellow firefighter John 'J.R.' Gaudet died in the line of duty. He was a graduate of Chenango Forks and Ithaca College, where he was a record-setting swimmer. Pavlick was also a marathon runner. He joined the Binghamton Fire Department in 2008, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in 2023 and receiving several commendations for bravery. According to his obituary, Pavlick had a good sense of humor, a sharp wit, and a calm demeanor. His funeral procession drove past several Binghamton fire stations on its way to the church. Pavlick leaves behind his wife, Jodi, and 7-year-old son, Reagan. Donations to support his family are being collected by the Syracuse Fire Department Credit Union. Binghamton Fire grieves another sudden loss

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — The Binghamton Fire Department, and the community as a whole, is mourning the tragic loss of Lieutenant Scott Pavlick who died unexpectedly on Tuesday. The Binghamton Fire Department took to Facebook to share the news of its brother's, of 17+ years, passing. 'It is with profound sadness that the Binghamton Fire Department announces the passing of active member Lieutenant Scott Pavlick, who died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, June 3rd. He was 47 years old,' the post read. Lt. Pavlick began his journey with BFD in April 2008, assigned to Engine 1 on Group D, where he remained for his whole career, earning the promotion to Lieutenant in 2023. 'Throughout his career, Scott was known for his steady leadership, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to the job and to those he served alongside,' the post added. The fire department shared multiple examples of Lt. Pavlick's bravery and heroism. In 2009, he rescued a man from a burning building on East Chatherine Street. As recently as 2024, Lt. Pavlick played a 'critical role' in saving a man who fell into the Susquehanna River at Rock Bottom Dam. 'Working with his crew, [Lt. Pavlick] helped pull an unresponsive victim from the dam using a rope. They immediately began CPR and were able to successfully restore a pulse. His dedication and quick thinking helped save a life that day,' the post explained. Lt. Pavlick earned recognition on multiple occasions for his 'bravery and outstanding performance,' BFD said. Beyond the call of duty, Lt. Pavlick was known around the department for his consistent smile, and his sense of humor. 'He had a way of bringing people together — whether it was through a well timed joke or simply showing up when you needed him. His presence made the firehouse a better place to be,' the post explained. Lt. Pavlick leaves behind his wife, Jodi, and 7-year-old son, Reagan. 'His best friend and greatest joy,' the post said. 'He was a devoted husband and father, and his love for his family was evident in everything he did.' In leu of JR Gaudet's passing earlier this year, the Binghamton Fire Department has been in a state of mourning that is hard to compare. 'To say that 2025 has been a difficult year for the Binghamton Fire Department is an understatement. As we continue to mourn the LODD of Firefighter JR Gaudet, this new tragedy has only deepened the sorrow felt across our department,' the post said. Lt. Pavlick's funeral is scheduled for, Wednesday, June 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Hillcrest. Binghamton firefighters rescue dog from river island

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A golden retriever is safe at home with her family after being rescued from an island in the Susquehanna River. Members of the Binghamton Fire Department gave Winnie a boat ride to shore on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday morning at about 11:30, a member of the Hatala family was preparing to take the 3-year-old English cream golden retriever for a walk when the dog spotted some Canadian geese and chased after them, crossing their invisible fence. The Hatala's launched a full-scale search near their home on Binghamton's Westside and received reports that Winnie was spotted swimming in the river. After the dog spent Wednesday night on an island in the river, a Binghamton Police drone was able to locate Winnie, and firefighters launched their rescue craft. Winnie and the Hatala family were overjoyed by the reunion, with Winnie wagging her tail before curling up for a long nap. The Hatala's say they plan to take Winnie to visit the fire station with a thank you gift in the near future. Honor JR Gaudet with challenge coin

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An effort to memorialize and pay tribute to fallen Binghamton firefighter John 'JR' Gaudet has been so successful, its organizer is looking to continue it. Brenden Horn is a volunteer firefighter with the Vestal Fire Department who developed a challenge coin to honor Gaudet. Horn says challenge coins are popular with firefighters and other first responders as collector's items or mementos to trade and share. He came up with developing a coin in honor of Gaudet as a fundraiser for his family. Horn originally had 500 produced and sold them all for at least $10 apiece. He says the coins are a small and affordable, yet meaningful way to keep Gaudet's memory alive. He says he made sure to first receive the blessing of the Gaudet family and the Binghamton Fire Department. 'They loved the idea because it was something that is small, but at the same time, it's something that you can hold on to and always have with you. You can use it as a golf ball marker, you can use it for a lot of things. It doesn't have to be just a challenge coin,' said Horn. The coins include Gaudet's badge number, the Binghamton Fire Department logo and the date of his last alarm, February 12, 2025. They cost $10 each, but folks can make additional donations. The first batch brought in $5,500 so Horn is ordering 500 more with the hope of raising $10,000 total.
