Person falls through ice trying to rescue deer in Delaware County
TOWN OF DELHI, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Environmental Conservation Officers and local first responders had to rescue a person after they fell through ice trying to rescue a deer. The Department of Environmental Conservation announced on Wednesday that in December, ECO Woodin responded to a call in the Town of Delhi after a motorist reported seeing a deer laying on the ice on Spring Lake. Woodin arrived at the scene and saw the deer laying approximately 100 yards from shore. Woodin determined that the ice was too thin to walk on and contacted local police in order to obtain resources to rescue the deer. Shortly after, a concerned citizen ran onto the ice with a snow tube from the other side of the lake. Woodin told the person to stop but the person fell into the lake, clinging onto the snow tube. Woodin contacted Delaware County Emergency Services about the new emergency. Woodin, Delaware County Emergency Services personnel, and local fire department members rescued the person from the water and ensured his safety. Then, they turned their attention back to the deer who was still on the ice. Woodin and local firefighters used a boat to successfully tow the deer to shore.
