Students from Kochi's Global Public School scale Mount Everest
KOCHI: For the first time, a 14-member student team from Global Public School in Kochi completed a trek to the Everest base camp. The team comprising nine boys and five girls from classes 8 to 12 reached an altitude of 5,364 meters above sea level on May 13. 'In an era where teenage interests are often dominated by video games, fast food, and passive leisure, GPS chose to challenge the norm. With vision, planning and an unwavering belief in the potential of its students, the school curated this two-week Himalayan expedition in partnership with the Re-Live Adventure team, a pioneer in youth adventure experiences,' says Dilip George, dean and principal of the school Far from being a spontaneous endeavour, the trek was the culmination of two months of intense training designed and executed by Binoy Boban from Re-Live Adventure. 'This journey represents the essence of what we believe education should be - bold, transformative, and deeply human. Students underwent structured fitness training, nutrition awareness sessions, mental conditioning, and team-building exercises to promote resilience, self-discipline and leadership,' says Dilip. The intensive training sessions came in handy as they battled harsh terrains, high altitudes, and limited comforts. According to the school management, the experience has left the students not only with incredible memories but with a profound sense of accomplishment and personal growth. The group returned to Kochi on Sunday.

Lessons in altitude: Global Public School students make it to Everest Base Camp
Kochi : For the 14 students from Global Public School (GPS), Thiruvaniyoor, it wasn't just the cold that left them speechless — it was the overwhelming realization that they reached Mount Everest Base Camp , a dream that came true after two months of intense training. The students reached an altitude of 5,364m above sea level on Friday. The team, consisting of nine boys and five girls from Classes VIII to XII, is believed to be the first school contingent from Kerala to achieve this feat. School officials said the expedition was the culmination of over two months of rigorous training that included physical conditioning, nutrition sessions and mental preparedness under the guidance of professional trainers from Re-Live Adventure team, led by trek operator Binoy Boban. The trek was led by the school's Hindi teacher, Reena Krishnan. Speaking to TOI, Krishnan said students volunteered for the trek, and during the training, they were taught to face all adverse scenarios, which helped them complete the journey. "The students underwent rigorous training to climb steep regions and they were also on a strict diet. Although I'm a football player, I underwent extensive training to complete it. At one point, at 4,410m, I suffered a severe headache and nearly fainted, but thankfully, the team took care of me." Neha S, another Class XII student, said her love for trekking inspired her to join. "The only challenge was the weather. It kept changing — wind, rain, even hailstorms. But we pushed through and made it," she said. Neha's mother Seema Ravindra said, "Though I was anxious at first, the daily updates reassured us. In the end, I'm incredibly proud of what the team achieved." The 14-member team returned to Kochi on Sunday and were received by parents and school officials at airport.
