Gene Hackman Case: Santa Fe Fire Chief Shares Deaths Timeline Update

Originally appeared on E! Online An official has shared more insight into the mysterious deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife. Nearly two weeks after police found the Oscar winner, 95, Betsy Arakawa, 65, and one of their three dogs dead inside the couple's Santa Fe home Feb. 26, local fire chief Brian Moya spoke out about the possible timing of the passing of Hackman and his wife. "Just because both bodies were in similar ways," he told Fox News in an interview on March 5, "it could be a similar timeframe." Moya noted that during the past three years he's been the Santa Fe fire chief, his department and emergency medical services have not responded to any calls at the couple's residence. Hackman was found dead in a mudroom, according to a Feb. 26 search warrant affidavit obtained by NBC News, with a deputy noting he believes the Superman star may have suddenly fallen. Arakawa, meanwhile, was found on the floor of a bathroom, with a space heater near her head and a bottle of prescription pills on the counter, along with pills scattered on the surface. Both bodies showed "obvious signs of death," according to the , while Arakawa's also showed signs of "body decomposition." However, authorities have also looked into Hackman's pacemaker to help assist with the timeline in the case. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza has said the device's last event was recorded Feb. 17—nine days before the Birdcage actor and his wife's bodies were found. "That is a very good assumption," he said at a Feb. 28 press conference, "that that was his last day of life." Mendoza also noted that it's "very difficult" to put together a timeline of Hackman and Arakawa's deaths, even with the help of the Office of the Medical Investigator "Just based on their body and other evidence on the body, it appears several days, possibly even up to a couple of weeks," he shared on Today Feb. 28. "There was no indication that anybody was moving about the house or doing anything different, so it's very hard to determine if they both passed at the time or how close they passed together." Just as mysterious are the causes of Hackman and his wife's death. The French Connection star and Arakawa have both tested negative for carbon monoxide. "At the time of death, they were negative for carbon monoxide, which means to me that is possibly ruled out," Mendoza explained at the press conference. "Right now, there's no indication that that has any anything to do with it." Gene Hackman's daughter ‘hadn't talked' to famous father in ‘months,' claims he was in ‘good health' before mysterious death

Gene Hackman's youngest daughter has spoken out about her father's health in the months leading up to his death. Leslie Anne Hackman, 58, revealed on Thursday that she 'hadn't talked' to the Oscar-winner and her stepmother, Hackman's wife Betsy Arakawa, in a 'couple of months' before their passings, but said the 'Unforgiven' star was 'in very good physical condition' up until the end. Hackman, Arakawa and one of their three dogs were found dead at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday after a maintenance worker was unable to get in touch with the couple and grew concerned. Hackman was 95. He married Arakawa, his second wife, in 1991. The classical pianist was 65. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Leslie said that she and the rest of her family are still processing the news and awaiting updates on the cause of death for both Hackman and Arakawa. Leslie and her older sister, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, 63, speculate that their dad and stepmom may have died from a carbon monoxide leak. Leslie, who described herself as having a 'close' relationship with her dad, also said, 'There was no indication that there was any problem' with his health before his passing. 'Despite his age, he was in very good physical condition,' she told the outlet, adding that the 'French Connection' star hadn't undergone any major surgeries in the past few months. 'He liked to do Pilates and yoga, and he was continuing to do that several times a week,' Leslie shared. 'So he was in good health,' she continued while sharing that Hackman's death was 'not terribly shocking because he was 95.' The youngest of Hackman's three children, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Faye Maltese, Leslie explained that she hadn't seen the actor or Arakawa in a 'few months' as she lives hundreds of miles away from New Mexico in California. 'We were close,' Leslie shared before admitting, 'I hadn't talked to them for a couple months, but everything was normal and everything was good.' Of her father's relationship with Arakawa, Leslie said, 'They had a wonderful marriage. And I give credit to his wife, Betsy, for keeping him alive.' '[Betsy] took very, very good care of him and was always looking out for his health,' she continued. 'So I am appreciative to her for that, and I'm very saddened by her passing.' Leslie plans to head to New Mexico once she speaks to cops in Santa Fe. 'We need to wait and find out whatever information from the police,' she explained. 'We weren't expecting to have to go out there and go through the house and all that.' The 'Birdcage' star's daughter went on, 'So we have some work cut out for us. But yeah, we'll be going out to New Mexico.' Earlier on Thursday, Leslie, Elizabeth and Hackman's granddaughter, Annie, confirmed the news of his and Arakawa's deaths in a statement to The Post. 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy,' they shared. 'He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa,' the statement continued. 'We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.' In a press release issued Thursday, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office confirmed that there 'were no apparent signs of foul play' at the home where Hackman and Arakawa were found. However, according to a police affidavit, law enforcement noted that the deaths were 'suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.' The affidavit also revealed that the door to the couple's multimillion house was 'unsecured and opened' and that there was no sign of forced entry or theft when police arrived. Law enforcement stated in the document that an open orange prescription pill bottle and pills were scattered around the room where Arakawa and the deceased dog were found. An autopsy was performed on both Arakawa and Hackman, according to the sheriff's press release, and carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals. There were no signs of external trauma to either of the deceased, per the release, which added that the official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending, and the investigation remains open.

Gene Hackman's daughter speaks out, reveals actor's condition before death

ALBAWABA - Gene Hackman's youngest daughter spoke up about her father's condition in the months leading up to his death. In a "couple of months" prior to their deaths, Leslie Anne Hackman, 58, disclosed on Thursday that she "hadn't talked" to the Oscar winner and her stepmother, Hackman's wife Betsy Arakawa. However, she claimed that the "Unforgiven" star was "in very good physical condition" until the very end. On Wednesday, Hackman, Arakawa, and one of their three dogs were discovered dead at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home after a maintenance worker became alarmed after failing to contact the couple. Hackman was 95. He married Arakawa, his second wife, in 1991. The classical pianist was 65. Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa during PCC Celebrity Art Show on September 11, 1991. Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection/Getty According to Leslie, she and her family are still adjusting to the news and are waiting for information regarding Hackman and Arakawa's causes of death. According to Leslie and her older sister, 63-year-old Elizabeth Jean Hackman, their father and stepmother may have perished due to a carbon monoxide leak. Leslie, who claimed to have a "close" relationship with her father, added that prior to his death, "there was no indication that there was any problem" with his health. She told the outlet, "He was in very good physical condition despite his age," and that the "French Connection" star hadn't had any significant surgery recently. "He enjoyed doing yoga and Pilates, and he was still doing that a few times a week," Leslie said. She added, "So he was in good health," adding that Hackman's passing was "not terribly shocking because he was 95." Living hundreds of miles away from New Mexico in California, Leslie, the youngest of Hackman's three children, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Faye Maltese, claimed that she hadn't seen the actor or Arakawa in a "few months." Before acknowledging that she hadn't spoken to them in a few months, Leslie said, "We were close, but everything was normal and good." "They had a wonderful marriage," Leslie remarked of her father's connection with Arakawa. I also give his wife Betsy credit for keeping him alive. She went on to say, "[Betsy] took very, very good care of him and was always looking out for his health." "For that, I am grateful, and I am deeply saddened by her passing." After talking to Santa Fe police, Leslie intends to travel to New Mexico. "We didn't anticipate having to go outside and inspect the house and everything." "We have some work ahead of us," the daughter of the "Birdcage" star continued. However, we will be traveling to New Mexico. In a statement to The Post earlier Thursday, Leslie, Elizabeth, and Hackman's granddaughter Annie confirmed the deaths of both Hackman and Arakawa. They said, "We regret to inform you of the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy." The statement added, "To us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa, but to millions of people around the world, he was loved and admired for his brilliant acting career." "We are devastated by the loss and will miss him terribly." The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office verified that there "were no apparent signs of foul play" at the residence where Hackman and Arakawa were discovered in a press release on Thursday. The deaths were, however, "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," according to a police affidavit. The couple's multimillion-dollar home's door was "unsecured and opened," according to the affidavit, and when police came, there was no evidence of theft or forced entry. According to the affidavit, the room where Arakawa and the dead dog were discovered had an open orange prescription medicine bottle and pills all over it. According to the sheriff's press release, both Arakawa and Hackman underwent autopsies, and both were asked to undergo toxicological and carbon monoxide testing. According to the announcement, neither of the deceased showed any symptoms of external injuries. We continue the inquiry and await the official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports.

Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa Had Mummified Body Parts When Found

Originally appeared on E! Online More details are being uncovered in the investigation into Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's deaths. The acting legend, 95, and his wife, 64, along with one of their three dogs, were found dead in their home after police were called to their residence for a routine welfare check on Feb. 26. And now, the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office has provided further insight into why authorities believe the pair—who married in 1991—had been deceased for "at least a day." According to an affidavit obtained by NBC News Feb. 27, Arakawa's body—which was found in the home's bathroom next to a space heater and a bottle of pills that was "open with pills scattered on the countertop," per the document—was already showing visual indications of decomposition. "The female decedant showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face," read the affidavit, "and mumification in both hands and feet." For reference, the process of bloating and mummification usually begin about 24-48 hours after a body has been deceased, according to Live Science. More from E! As the affidavit, which was submitted to obtain a search warrant, continued, "The male decedent also showed obvious signs of death, similar and consistent with the female decedent." In addition to providing insight into the timing of the passing of Hackman and Arakawa, the Sante Fe Sheriff's Office declared that officials have deemed the circumstances around the tragedy as "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.' For one, preliminary findings found no external signs of trauma, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office told NBC News. However, when the Santa Fe City Fire Department responded to a request to conduct carbon monoxide testing, they 'did not locate signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.' A cause of death has still yet to be determined, according to the outlet. Furthermore, the front door to the couple's home had been left ajar—which was what had prompted the call to authorities—though there were no signs of forced entry, per the affidavit. Following the pair's untimely deaths, Hackman's friends, colleagues and admirers spoke out to honor his legacy. "Gene Hackman (was) a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity," Francis Ford Coppola—who directed the actor in 1974's The Conversation—wrote on Instagram Feb. 27. "I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution." And Star Wars' George Takei echoed that sentiment, describing the Birdcage star as "one of the true giants of the screen." "Gene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it," George wrote in a message on X. "He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe. That's how powerful an actor he was. He will be missed, but his work will live on forever." For more stars' reactions to Hackman's sudden passing, keep reading.
