Kashmir zone Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Birdi on Saturday reviewed the security arrangements for the upcoming Mela Kheer Bhawani , an official said. Talking to reporters, Birdi said stringent security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the annual fair on June 3 at the Kheer Bhawani temple in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district . "The main function of the Mela Kheer Bhawani is on June 3. Ongoing encounter between forces and terrorists enters second day in J&K's Kishtwar

(PTI) NEW DELHI: An encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chatroo in Jammu and Kashmir 's Kishtwar district continued for the second day, with the Army confirming that one soldier died during the operation. The White Knight Corps posted on X, saying, "During the ongoing operation, fierce gunfight is continuing. One of our Brave hearts sustained grievous injuries in the exchange of fire and has succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operation is in progress." The exchange of fire started early in the morning after security personnel made contact with the terrorists. The Jammu and Kashmir Police also confirmed the gunfight, saying, "Exchange of fire started between Security Forces and terrorists in the Singhpora area of Chhatru in Kishtwar." Additional troops have been deployed to the region to support the ongoing operation, which aims to locate and neutralise the terrorists. The area has been sealed off and search efforts have been increased. Reinforcements have been brought in to maintain containment. Details regarding the number of terrorists and the current situation are still awaited. This encounter follows recent operations in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir. On May 16, inspector general of Police for Kashmir Zone, VK Birdi, said that six terrorists were killed in two separate encounters in Kelar, Shopian and Tral. These were joint operations by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF. "In the wake of heightened terror activities in Kashmir Valley, all the security forces deployed here reviewed their strategies. Following this review, there was an intensified focus on operations. On the basis of this intensified focus and coordination, we conducted two successful operations in the last 48 hours during which we had significant achievement. These two operations were conducted in the Kelar in Shopian and Tral areas, which resulted in the neutralisation of a total of six terrorists. We are committed to finish the terror ecosystem in Kashmir Valley," Birdi said. The counter-terror actions have increased after the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 people, including a Nepali national, were killed. Security forces have since stepped up operations across the Union Territory.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 15 (ANI): The encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Nader, Tral area of Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora is still ongoing, Inspector General of Police (Kashmir Zone) Vidhi Kumar Birdi confirmed on Thursday, following a fierce exchange of fire that left three terrorists dead. IGP Birdi said, 'Security forces got specific information regarding the movement of terrorists in that area (Nader, Tral, Awantipora). Accordingly, a cordon was laid, and it led to an encounter between security forces and the hold-up of terrorists. So far, we have observed three bodies of terrorists. The operation is still ongoing.' He added that the identities and affiliations of the terrorists have not been ascertained yet. 'Identities and affiliations could only be divulged after it concludes.... This (encounter) is part of an all-out effort to decimate that terror ecosystem. It is the swift resolve of the security forces to neutralise them so that things are kept under control,' he added. Meanwhile, in a separate post on X, the Kashmir Zone Police said that efforts are underway to confirm the identity and affiliation of the three terrorists killed, as the search operation continues. Kashmir Zone Police said, 'Three #terrorists have been neutralised in the Tral #encounter. Identification & affiliation being ascertained. Search operation in progress. Further details shall follow.' On being asked if the terrorists involved in the encounter had a hand in the Pahalgam terror attack, the Kashmir IGP also noted, 'The operation is yet to conclude. We will divulge the identity and affiliation (of the terrorists) only after that.' Earlier on Thursday, the Indian army confirmed that three terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Nader area. The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army shared a post on X, 'Three hardcore terrorists have been eliminated in the ongoing Operation at Nader, Awantipora. Identity of terrorists is being ascertained.' On the basis of special intelligence input, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Nader area of J-K's Tral in Awantipora in the morning hours of Thursday. Suspicious activity was observed by the troops and on being challenged, the terrorists opened heavy fire on the forces and a fierce gunfight ensued. The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army earlier today shared a post on their official 'X' handle and informed about the 'Operation Nader'.'On 15 May 2025, based on specific intelligence input from Int agency, a Cordon & Search Operation was launched by Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF at Nader, Tral, Awantipora. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and on being challenged, terrorists opened heavy fire and fierce gunfight ensued. Operation is in progress', the 'X' post read. Following the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, including a Nepali national, were killed, the Indian forces have intensified their operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation for the terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor in which precision strikes destroyed terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir (PoJK) and eliminated nearly 100 terror operatives at key bases in Pakistan. Among the targets were Bhawalpur, the headquarters of Jaish, and Muridke, a key training base of Lashkar. (ANI)

J&K Police record statements to find clues on Pahalgam terror attack

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have started recording the statements of locals who reached the attack site to collect clues on the sequence of events around the Pahalgam terror attack. Top police officers, including Inspector General of Police V.K. Birdi, camped in Pahalgam on Thursday. They interacted with officers of the CRPF and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The attack site, Baisaran, remained out of bounds for tourists. Security agencies continue to scan adjoining areas of Baisaran. The J&K Police have released the sketches of three suspects, one local and two non-local terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), believed to be behind the Pahalgam attack. The police have announced a reward of ₹20 lakh to anyone who provides information about their whereabouts. According to the police, Adil Hussain Thoker — a resident of Anantnag, Ali Bhai alias Talha Bhai, and Hashim Musa alias Suleiman, both Pakistan nationals, were involved in the terrorist attack. Thoker, according to the police records, exfiltrated into Pakistan or Pakistan Occupied Kashmir in 2018. A Thoker-led group is believed to have been active for the past one year in the region. The militants used automatic rifles to kill and injure around 44 civilians, mostly tourists. Twenty-five civilians and one local were killed in the attack. Meanwhile, the tourist footfall remained affected in Pahalgam for the third consecutive day on Thursday. Most shops remained closed as a mark of protest against the attack.
