McDonald's launches ‘top-tier' new McFlurry flavor to celebrate dessert's 30th anniversary — but there's a catch

McDonald's is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the McFlurry with a brand-new flavor. The Birthday Cake McFlurry, made with creamy vanilla soft serve and blended with frosted cake-flavored confetti cookie dough pieces and birthday cake-flavored syrup, has landed in stores — but there's a catch. Given that the confection was originally created in Canada, the special-edition flavor is not available in America. 'Yes … I know you're shocked, but McDonald's has given Canada yet another amazing McFlurry flavor as we sit with the two that we always get,' food blog Snackolator quipped. The American Instagrammer lamented that Canadian Mickey D's had an Apple Cake McFlurry tied to 'A Minecraft Movie' as well as a 'Cadbury Egg McFlurry just in the last month … Just throwing that out there,' they snarked. Though it's disappointing that McDonald's locations in America won't be getting 'one of the best new flavors,' it's no surprise given the origins of the McFlurry. The beloved treat was created by a Canadian McDonald's franchisee named Ron McLellan in Bathurst, New Brunswick, in 1995. According to a McDonald's fan page, the original McFlurry flavors included Oreo, Nestlé Crunch, M&M's and Butterfinger, and the shake menu has since expanded to over 20 flavors worldwide. As of now, there are no talks of the Birthday Cake McFlurry moving to the US anytime soon — but Delish noted that the fast-food franchise has a history of bringing Canadian menu items to America, so it's not entirely out of the question. Canadian McDonald's fans can't wait to get their hands on the newest addition to the menu. 'Wait this might actually change my life,' one comment read. 'This is a sweet way to celebrate,' another wrote. 'I had it. Definitely a top-tier flavor,' another lucky customer noted.

McDonald's menu adds celebratory new dessert with a twist

McDonald's has unveiled another viral menu item, which might be the most desired yet controversial one so far. However, there's a reason. The McFlurry was invented in 1995 by a Canadian McDonald's franchisee, Ron McLellan, in Bathurst, New Brunswick. Since then, it has become a menu staple and a beloved fan favorite worldwide. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Because of the McFlurry's immense success, many fast-food chains have created their own versions to compete with McDonald's, the industry's biggest chain. Sonic introduced its Custard Concretes in 2017. Chick-fil-A released the Cookies & Cream milkshake in 2006, and Wendy's (WEN) recently debuted the new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions this year. In celebration of the frozen treat's 30th anniversary, McDonald's released the Birthday Cake McFlurry this month. This new menu item features its iconic vanilla soft-serve mixed with frosted cake-flavored confetti cookie dough pieces and birthday cake syrup. However, there's a catch to this exciting, limited-time new dessert. Related: Another fast-food burger chain is quietly closing locations McDonald's (MCD) adapts its menu in different countries, featuring items based on foods that are cultural preferences or conveniently available. This is why the Birthday Cake McFlurry will only be available in Canada at the moment. Just because McDonald's launches a new menu item in one country doesn't mean the chain can't launch it elsewhere. Hence, exclusive menu items may overlap across some countries. McDonald's has neither confirmed nor denied that it will bring the Birthday Cake McFlurry to the U.S., but fans can only hope its debut is successful enough in Canada to potentially launch it in the States. U.S. social media users have expressed their disappointment about being left out of this McDonald's dessert launch. Many users questioned McDonald's on its loyalty by commenting, "Americans remember, they serve you nothing for your loyalty," and "This is ridiculous, you weren't born in Canada, the USA should get this." Another user called out the fast-food chain, commenting, "Does McDonald's just hate Americans since we get no treats?" A user made light of the situation by commenting, "It's probably because they can't keep the ice cream machines running in the U.S." The decisions on where and when to launch limited-time menu items or even permanent additions depend on the supply chain, consumer demand, operational efficiency, and production costs, among other decisive factors. McDonald's shakes up fan-favorite dessert with new 30th anniversary addition… and fans are FURIOUS

McDonald's customers are furious to learn that its Birthday Cake McFlurry will NOT be hitting US menus anytime soon. Loyal customers were quick to slam McDonald's for celebrating the dessert's 30th anniversary outside the US. Instead, the chain is marking the occasion in Canada. 'I knew the second I saw this it wasn't in America,' an Instagram user wrote on a post created by Snackolator. '@mcdonalds this is ridiculous. You weren't born in Canada, the USA should get this,' another person responded. In fact, the McFlurry was actually invented by Canadian franchisee Ron McLellan in 1995. The new McFlurry combines vanilla ice cream mixed with cake-flavored cookie dough pieces and cake-flavored syrup. The flavor is only available for a limited time, and it joins a variety of other new items added to Canadian McDonald's menus. Multiple fans, including Snackolator, mentioned these new menu additions. 'Canada lately has gotten an Apple shake for Minecraft and Cadbury Egg McFlurry just in the last month... just throwing that out there,' the food blogger wrote. 'I like the subtle shade to McDonald's for showing obvious favoritism to other countries lol,' an Instagrammer replied to the comment. Like the Birthday Cake McFlurry, the chain's Creme-Egg McFlurry and Apple Shake are not available in the US. Canada also offers Skor and Smarties McFlurries at all McDonald's restaurants. The only McFlurries currently available in the US are Oreo and M&M's, which are two of the desert's original flavors. As of now, there are no discussions of whether McDonald's in the US will begin offering the Birthday Cake-flavored dessert. Instagram users from the US have jokingly accepted they will likely need to 'travel to Canada' in order to buy the treat. McDonald's has been busy working on bouncing back from slumping sales, which includes a 3.6 percent drop in this year's first quarter. The restaurant chain is working to earn its customers back by extending popular deals, including its $5 Meal Deal. McDonald's is also a couple of weeks into its nationwide McCrispy Strips rollout. While the McFlurry has grown to become a talked-about desert at the fast food empire, it hasn't diminished the anticipation over the return of snack wraps. Dubbed the "McCrispy Snack Wrap," the popular item was rumored to arrive at restaurants on April 29. This has proven not to be the case, and as of now, the snack wraps have yet to become available in the US. Loyal McDonald's customers who are too excited to wait can purchase a McWrap or regular Snack Wrap at any location in Canada.

McDonald's debuts new McFlurry with birthday cake flavor outside US. What to know McDonald's debuted a special McFlurry flavor but Americans can't get in on the fun quite yet. The fast food chain giant recently launched its Birthday Cake McFlurry in Canada ahead of the dessert classic's 30th anniversary next month. The sweet treat combines vanilla soft serve with frosted cake-flavored confetti cookie dough pieces and birthday cake syrup, according to McDonald's. The regular size comes with a total of 680 calories while the snack size totals 440. The McFlurry was invented three decades ago in Bathurst, New Brunswick, launching on June 7, 1995. Earlier this year, the company launched a limited-time "'95 McFlurry" in Ontario as part of a collaboration with the Toronto Raptors amid the basketball team's 30th anniversary. The item fused the team's purple and red colors with vanilla soft serve, red popping candy and blueberry flavored syrup. Is the Birthday Cake McFlurry available in the U.S.? The Birthday Cake McFlurry flavor is currently not available in the U.S. As of May 13, American customers only have access to the staple Oreo and M&M flavors, as a Birthday Cake McFlurry U.S. launch date had not yet been announced. USA TODAY has reached out to McDonald's for comment. Last year McDonald's unveiled two special flavors for limited time, including a Kit Kat Banana Split McFlurry and a Grandma McFlurry. The Grandma McFlurry featured syrup and chopped candy pieces while the Kit Kat Banana Split McFlurry blended real banana and strawberry clusters with chocolatey Kat Kat wafer pieces.
