Six of Glasgow's best street food eats and where to find them

As we await the opening date for Fook Mei, a second venture from the Ho Lee Fook team, we've rounded up a list of six other places to find amazing street food in the city. From wood-fired pizza served from a converted horsebox to tacos down a 'hidden lane', here's what to look out for. Doughman's land Derby Street, Finnieston This quirky little container pitches up in Glasgow's West End from Wednesday to Sunday every week, serving a small but brilliant menu of freshly made pizzas. The brothers behind the venture are dedicated to using local produce wherever possible, and with a wood-fired oven kept at a toasty 500 degrees, can whip up the likes of pepperoni and hot honey or pistachio, mortadella ham and mushroom-topped pizzas in just 90 seconds. Wednesday to Friday, to try their creations for just £7. If you're a student, be prepared to pay even less thanks to a thrifty £6 deal. (Read more: Ron Mackenna review: Dough Man's Land) Ceylon Cartel The Barras Market You might recall these newcomers from my list of the best food and drink I had ordered in Glasgow earlier this spring, and with their dishes of Sri Lankan street food, they have easily earned a second mention. (Read more: A food & drink writer's guide for what to order in Glasgow this month) From traditional Kotthu topped with fried egg and cheese to crispy lamb rolls or a Watalappam dessert made with cardamom and nutmeg-spiked coconut milk, their dishes are sunshine in a cardboard bowl. They're currently located at The Barras, with plans to attend more events and festivals across the city in the near future. Rafa's Hidden Lane 1103 Argyle Street The colourful Hidden Lane in Finnieston is home to Rafa's, a taco spot which has over the years developed a cult favourite status in Glasgow. The menu here is always evolving, with some of the most recent specials including steak tacos topped with homemade chorizo-infused mayo, beech mushrooms and deep-fried pickles or pork belly burnt ends with jalapeno and bacon BBQ sauce. If you're a fan of their laid-back style and bold flavours, you might also be interested to know that the team behind Rafa's and Baked Pizza Al Taggio have recently launched Teglia Pizza on Cathcart Road in the city's Southside. Pakistani Street Food 412 Victoria Road This compact spot on Victoria Road is one of my favourite places to visit when searching for a hearty, flavourful lunch at a reasonable price. A chicken kebab wrap (with tender chunks of meat and salad drizzled in tamarind and garlic mayo, then wrapped in a warm paratha) is my go-to, while elsewhere on the menu are Biryani dishes, stuffed naan breads and pakora. Add a samosa for snacking on later to your order for just £1.50. Since 2017, the family-run team at MacTassos has been passionate about serving their menu of pita breads filled with your choice of pork, chicken or falafel alongside extras of halloumi fries and sweet baklava. For a next-level summer picnic, order a few gyros boxes to share and head straight to the park. Antojitos The 78, 14 Kelvinhaugh Street Brother and sister duo John and Louise Kelly first launched this vegan-friendly Mexican as a lockdown project in 2020, going on to be crowned winners of the Best Scottish Street Food award just 11 months later. Though they are now based in the kitchen at the 78 in Glasgow's West End, Antojitos stays true to its street food roots with a menu of Mexican dishes, including quesabirria, spinach taquitos and grilled elote. If you find yourself in Edinburgh this summer, you can also get a taste of Antojitos at the popular Edinburgh Street Food collective at the Omni Centre.

We tried Pink Elephant Indian restaurant in Merthyr Tydfil

The Pink Elephant on High Street in Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, opened on Tuesday, May 13 as the sister restaurant to Three Elephants, which is based in Newport and opened in September 2024. The restaurant is under the ownership of Shah Jahan and the staff are trained under the watchful eye of celebrity chef Aitkur Kahman, who is hoping to pass on some of his 20 years of experience in the food industry, including serving King Charles during his time living in London. (Image: NQ) A spokesperson for the team at Pink Elephant said: "We are pleased to be one of the best Indian restaurants in Merthyr with incredible food, polite and friendly staff, and great value for money. "We highly suggest sampling our Speciality dishes and know you will enjoy every taste. When you order your Curry, Balti, Biryani or Tandoori from us, you'll see why we have been named as one of the best places to experience Indian cuisine in the Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil area." (Image: NQ) We were invited down to try out some dishes on opening night, and one of the first things that struck us on arrival was how busy the restaurant was for a middle of the week opening. It was clear that word of the quality and talent of the chefs at Pink Elephant had got around quickly and it was delightful to see how many people were turning out to support a new business. (Image: Supplied) The staff were incredibly friendly, and welcoming throughout our visit, ensuring we had everything we would need while maintaining a wonderfully calm and relaxing atmosphere. We ordered meat samosas to start, which were beautifully cooked, falling apart from the moment the fork touched, but still containing that deliciously spicy flavour and crunch that we come to love. (Image: NQ) We followed that up with a lamb pasanda, served with pilau rice and naan. We could not fault the presentation, as the curry was brought out in a silver bowl, with the naan in a small silver platter and the rice on its own plate. (Image: NQ) The portions were very generous too, with a high quantity of chunks of meat in a curry that was smothered in rich sauce that left our tongue tingling with the strength of flavour. The meat was cooked exquisitely, falling apart the moment our fork touched it, and was covered in a sauce that let its flavours sing and shine in a unique manner with each mouthful. (Image: NQ) During the meal, we were also entertained with a brilliant display of steam curling through a small glass jar. It was really one of those things you have to visit to really experience. Throughout our visit, I could not fault the quality of the food or the friendliness of the staff, and would highly recommend a visit to the Pink Elephant. The restaurant is open from 5pm to 11pm Sunday to Thursday and until 11.30pm on Friday and Saturday.

Court convicts Gnanasekaran in Anna University sexual assault case

A lower court Wednesday found the accused in the Anna University student sexual assault case, Gnanasekaran, guilty. The court, while delivering the verdict, said the 'prosecution has proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt'. The court found Gnanasekaran guilty of the charges framed against him in the sexual assault case in December 2024. The assault sparked widespread criticism of security measures at Anna University, located near the high-security Raj Bhavan and IIT Madras. The victim was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 37-year-old accused, who sold Biryani on the pavement of the university. In her complaint, the victim said that while she was speaking to her male friend on December 23, 2024 at about 8 pm, behind a building on the college campus, they were intimidated by an unknown person, who sexually assaulted her. Mahila Court Judge Rajalakshmi said she will pronounce the verdict in the case on June 2.

Biryani Blues Raises USD 5 Mn from Yugadi Capital to Fuel Aggressive Expansion

You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Biryani Blues, the leading Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) chain known for its authentic Hyderabadi dum biryani, has raised USD 5 million in a pre-Series C funding round led by Yugadi Capital, the new fund by Carpediem Capital, with participation from other investors. The funds will be deployed towards expanding the brand's footprint by opening over 100 new outlets in the next three years, primarily targeting high-street locations and malls across North India. A significant portion of the capital will also be allocated to strengthening its operational and delivery infrastructure and ramping up hiring across corporate and store-level roles. "We are poised to accelerate our expansion by opening over 100 new brand stores over the next three years," said Raymond Andrews, Co-founder of Biryani Blues. "After optimising operations and turning profitable over the past year, we're in a strong position to deepen our presence in North India before expanding to other regions." Founded in 2013 by Aparna and Raymond Andrews, Biryani Blues was envisioned as a QSR chain dedicated to biryani, aiming to take this iconic dish global. Operated by Thea Kitchen Pvt Ltd, the brand currently runs 68 outlets across North India and Bengaluru. It serves over two lakh monthly orders through a robust omni-channel model that includes both dine-in and delivery services. Biryani Blues offers a rich and diverse menu centered on Hyderabadi dum biryani, along with kebabs, curries, breads, and desserts—positioning itself as a value-for-money proposition in the mass market segment. Its Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) stands at INR 100 crore (~USD 12 million) with a reported FY25 revenue of USD 10 million. The latest funding has taken the company's valuation to USD 30 million. "With this infusion, we reinforce our confidence in management's ability to scale its decade-long success," said Arvind Nair, Chairman of Carpediem Capital. Previously, the brand raised USD 5 million from Rebel Foods in 2022 and USD 2 million from Carpediem's earlier fund between FY16–FY17. Biryani Blues now sets its sights on becoming India's number one QSR biryani brand. As its tagline goes: "Think Biryani, Think Biryani Blues."
