Bishop Guilfoyle advances to State Championship after defeating Bishop Carroll

ALTOONA, PA. (WTAJ) — Bishop Guilfoyle is now one step away from repeating as state champions after the Marauders defeated Bishop Carroll 49-42 in the Class 1A semifinals. In a back and forth game the Marauders led 28-23 at halftime, but the Huskies came out on fire in the third quarter and opened the frame on a 10-3 run to take a two point lead. The contest then went to the fourth quarter tied at 33. Bishop Guilfoyle had ice in their veins in the fourth quarter and wouldn't be denied another trip to Hershey. Freshman Layona Williams opened the quarter with a pair of baskets to restore the Marauders lead and they eventually pushed the lead to eight points. Morgan Ruggery and Williams finished tied for the team lead with 14 points. 'It's amazing you start the season and this is kind of like the expectation,' said Ruggery. 'Like you want to get back here, especially when you came out here last year. So to be able to come back and do it again is really fun.' In the State Championship Game the Marauders will take on Linville Hill. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Four remain as PIAA semifinals approach

ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Just four teams remain representing central Pennsylvania in the PIAA state basketball tournament as we move into the semifinal round. The four programs, all girls teams, include Bishop McCort, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop Carroll. In Class 2A, Berlin plays Mountain View Friday at Mechanicsburg High School. The game tips off at 6:30. Berlin, led by the Prosser sisters is 25-2, and haven't lost since December, 6. The Mountaineers have won their state tournament matchups by an average of 16 points and may very well be the team to beat in Class 2A. But Mountain View, the District 2 champion, is coming off a 32-14 quarterfinal win over Williams Valley. The Eagles are giving up just 30 points per game. The winner of Berlin and Mountain View will play the winner of Bishop McCort and Penns Manor in the 2A championship. That game will be played at Central Cambria High School on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A McCort-Berlin championship is juicy for the 814, but the Crushers will have to take down the District 6 runners-up Penns Manor, again, in a District 6 championship rematch. Back in February at Mount Aloysius, McCort held off Comets 54-49 in a tight battle. After beating the defending state champs, Kennedy Catholic, McCort is in its best position to get back to the PIAA championship since 2017. The 2A title game is Thursday, March 27 at the Giant Center. On Saturday in class 1A, we get a second District 6 championship rematch when Bishop Guilfoyle plays Bishop Carroll at Altoona High School. The defending 1A champion Marauders are 2-0 this season against the Huskies, winning, on average, by 20 points. But before writing off the Huskies against BG, consider this, Carroll has won its three state games by an average of 30 points and is playing its best basketball of the season right now. The winner of this matchup advances to the 1A championship on Friday, March 28 in Hershey. That team will play the winner of Linville Hill and Lourdes Regional. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Marauders rally back, beat Penn Cambria in semifinals

ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Late free throws iced a wild District 6 semifinal win for Bishop Guilfoyle as the Marauders rally back to beat Penn Cambria Tuesday night, 76-68. The Panthers embraced it's mountain mentality early, going up 38-22 behind a 23-point night from senior Brandon Rabish. But unable to put Bishop Guilfoyle away, that lead slipped. The Marauders rallied to within four at halftime, and took the lead in the third behind a Nick Foor three as he capped off a 22-2 run. Foor led the Marauders with 20 points, and another triple but BG up 66-56 early in the fourth. But Penn Cambria did not go quietly. Rabish led Penn Cambria's last effort and got the Panthers within 3 in the final minute. But BG iced it at the line as the Marauders head back to the District 6 championship to face Forest Hills. BG holds off tough Clearfield squad

ALTOONA (WTAJ) — Defending champion Bishop Guilfoyle seems prized to chase a consecutive 1A championship, picking up its 18th win in a tight 58-55 win over Clearfield on Friday. The Bison led early in the fourth, as freshman Eve Helsel scored 26-points in the loss. But playing just six-girls deep, the Clearfield's depth caught up to them late. Buckets by Maurie Querry and Anberlyn Petrecca got the Lady Marauders back on top where they'd herd off the Bison. Bishop Guilfoyle moves to 18-2 on the season, while the Bison slip to 13-5. Off the court, Friday's game was a Sideline Cancer matchup, BG fans raised $10,500. If you know someone we missed on Wednesday, please email sports@ Gavin Bell (Hollidaysburg) – Bloomsburg, FootballOn the opportunity to play in college: 'I was hoping since I was little that I would go to college, and this year, I mean, I just happened to get the chance and I'm very blessed.' Michael Cacciotti (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Mount Aloysius, BaseballOn choosing MAC: 'The coaching staff, coach Kime, he's a really good coach. He knows how to play some baseball. I just I picked it because it's close to home now, and I feel like it's a special place for me.' Alex Dixon (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Penn Tech, BaseballOn getting to play at the next level: 'It's a dream come true. So being able to announce it, it's amazing.' Hamilton Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Slippery Rock, FootballOn making commitment: '(There were) a lot of question marks at the end of the season, really, what was going to happen? No. 1 wrestling recruit Bo Bassett heading to Iowa Ava Geishauser (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Indiana University of Pennsylvania, SoccerOn continuing soccer career: 'It's kind of everything I've worked for, everything that my parents have helped me and supported me through. Gavin Harrold (Penn Cambria) – Indiana University of Pennsylvania, FootballOn his high school career: 'The legacy we left was definitely amazing. Connor McElheny (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Saint Francis, FootballOn choosing SFU: 'It's been it's been a staple for my whole life. It's been really close to me. Carson Nagle (Bald Eagle) – Lock Haven, FootballOn what he brings to Lock Haven: 'They're getting someone that is going to come in and compete every day. They're getting a guy who wants to win. (Who) is going to bring wins to that program. And they're going to get a guy who's going to come in and say, I'm going to be a leader right away. I'm going to start. Moral of the story is I'm going to start.' Trevor Rehm (Bishop Guilfoyle) – Nova Southeastern, Basketball Wyatt Spackman (Bald Eagle) – Lock Haven, Football Eric Ulery (Hollidaysburg) – Allegany College, BaseballOn choosing Allegany: 'I went down there to throw a bullpen for them, and their coaches made me feel like I was family right away. I went down there to practice with them, and meshed with the team really well. You could tell they were down there to play and they weren't messing around. And I really like that competition. It makes me work hard.' Paul Wedel (Hollidaysburg) – Saint Francis, FootballOn choosing between football and baseball: 'I was always in between baseball or football. And then I hurt my shoulder last summer and I had to get surgery, so that kind of sealed it for me, for football. And I'm happy that it happened because I'm with my decision.
