Dilapidated Umhlali station needs urgent repair
Umhlali police station is calling on the community and local businesses to assist in maintaining and repairing its ageing infrastructure.
Officers say that while they remain committed to serving the community with diligence, a lack of resources has made upkeep increasingly difficult.
'It is a reality that we need assistance with the upkeep and repair of parts of the station,' said station captain PJ Bisschoff.
'We are fortunate to have already received help from the business sector, including the provision of new toilet facilities and grass cutting.'
Despite these welcomed contributions, more needs to be done. Bisschoff highlighted that the most pressing concerns include repairs to the designated firearms officer's office, which has a large hole in the floor and a leaking roof. The detective offices also suffer from persistent roof leaks.
The state of the facilities continues to affect the experience of community members visiting the station.
Ballito resident Dieter Zettler, who recently visited the station to report a crime, expressed concern about the condition of the charge office.
'How anyone can expect proper police work to be done in this very limited space, housing, at that moment, four detectives and staff, and with no shelving to keep paperwork in order, is incomprehensible,' said Zettler.
' Never mind the front door, which lacks a handle and cannot be locked.'
