ABVP protests arrest of two of its members in woman student self-immolation case
'We seek clarification from the chief minister on why an innocent student who attempted to save the burning woman student was arrested,' Patra said, accusing the Crime Branch of investigating the case in a 'partisan' manner. Holding placards and banners, the ABVP activists led by Biswajit Patra, Bhubaneswar Organising secretary, raised slogans and burnt an effigy of Crime Branch of Odisha Police. Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 (PTI) A day after two of its members were arrested in the Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College woman student self-immolation death incident, the ABVP on Tuesday staged a demonstration here accusing the Odisha Police Crime Branch of probing the case in a 'partisan' manner. They also alleged that the Crime Branch was shielding the activists of the BJD and Congress who allegedly spread rumours against the deceased woman student. 'We also demand immediate release of the two students who have been arrested by the CB,' Patra said. ABVP, a student wing of the RSS, staging an agitation against the BJP government in Odisha, has come as a major embarrassment for the saffron outfit. 'We see a political conspiracy behind the arrest and harassment of ABVP students,' Patra said. The CB on Monday had arrested Subhra Sambait Nayak, the state joint secretary of ABVP and Jyoti Prakash Biswal, a student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, where the woman studied. 'They picked up innocent students from their house in the middle of the night on Sunday,' alleged ABVP state secretary Diptimayi Pratihari. She said that the ABVP will not remain silent as its activists are harassed and attempts to implicate innocents continue. Attempts by the Odisha Police to 'torture 'ABVP workers mentally and physically will be strongly opposed, she said. Biswal was initially praised for trying to save the woman student, who set herself on fire on July 12 over alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against a professor. He had also suffered burn injuries while trying to douse the blaze of the woman student, the ABVP leaders said. The two were arrested on Sunday night and booked under BNS section 108 (abetment of suicide) and 61(2) (a) (criminal conspiracy). Biswal was recently discharged from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, after recovering from burn injuries. The state government had praised him for his 'heroic' attempt to save the woman stuent. PTI AAM AAM RG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. 2 student leaders arrested on abetment of suicide charges
Balasore: Two student leaders, who shot the video of the 20-year-old woman setting herself on fire at a college in Balasore district, were arrested on Monday on abetment of suicide charges. Those arrested were identified as Subhra Sambit Nayak and Jyoti Prakash Biswal, a student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, where the woman studied. Biswal was initially hailed for trying to save the woman, who set herself on fire on July 12 over alleged inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against a professor. He had also suffered burn injuries while trying to douse the blaze. The duo was arrested on Sunday night and booked under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and 61(2) (a) (criminal conspiracy), police said. They knew about the woman's plan of self-immolation and filmed the video of it, which went viral on social media, an officer of the Crime Branch said. Biswal was recently discharged from SCB Medical College and Hospital after recovering from burn injuries. The State government had praised him for his 'heroic' attempt to save the woman. 'Yes, initially it was believed that Biswal attempted to save the burning woman. But, during the investigation, it came to the fore that he was aware of the woman's plan and filmed the self-immolation attempt on his mobile phone. In the process, he sustained burn injuries,' the officer said. Biswal and Nayak were produced before a court, which remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days. The woman, who sustained 95 per cent burn injuries, had died on July 14 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar. She allegedly poured petrol and set herself on fire, claiming that the college authorities were not taking any action against the Head of Department (HoD) of the integrated course, who allegedly sought sexual favours from her. The HoD, Samira Kumar Sahoo, and the college's principal, Dillip Ghose, were earlier arrested on abetment of suicide charges. With the fresh arrests, the number of persons in custody rose to four. Following the arrests, the Opposition BJD alleged that the woman was forced to take her life by ABVP members. 'This is evident from the arrest of Subhra Sambit Nayak, who is the State Joint Secretary of ABVP,' BJD MLA Goutam Buddha Das said, addressing a press conference. The BJD students' wing leader, Ipsita Sahoo, claimed, 'Jyoti Prakash Biswal, the so-called saviour of the woman, also belongs to ABVP. There was a conspiracy, and the woman was a victim of it.' The ABVP was not immediately available for comment.

ED arrests Odisha-based firm's MD
Bhubaneswar: Following day-long multi-city searches, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the Managing Director (MD) of an Odisha-based company in connection with a fake bank guarantee scam, an official said on Saturday. Partha Sarathi Biswal, Managing Director of M/s Biswal Tradelink Private Limited (BTPL), was arrested on Friday after searches in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata at locations linked to the Odisha-based company, said an official statement. After the arrest, Biswal was sent to ED custody. As per the ED, the Central agency recorded an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and initiated investigation into the fake bank guarantee scam on the basis of a case registered by Delhi's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), on November 11, 2024. The case was registered against BTPL, its directors and others, for providing fake bank guarantee, which was submitted to Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). Investigation by the ED revealed that BTPL fraudulently arranged and submitted fake bank guarantees of Rs 68.2 crore along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations for an SECI tender. For providing this bank guarantee, Rs 5.40 crore was received by BTPL from Reliance Power, the ED statement said. Evidence confirms the use of fake documents in the name of certain banks and fake email IDs in the name of SBI, the probe agency said. The probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. 'Many violations of the Companies Act are found. No statutory records are found at registered address -- such as books of accounts, shareholders' registers. Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents,' the ED statement said. At least seven undisclosed bank accounts of the company were found and proceeds of crime of crores of rupees have been traced to these accounts. Sources said the Central agency, during investigations, found that the company, its directors and associates were engaged in the issuance of fake bank guarantees against a commission of 8 per cent.

Three more accused arrested for abetting student's suicide at Odisha college
Three more accused have been arrested for alleged criminal conspiracy and abetting a 20-year-old student's suicide at a college in Odisha's Balasore. The student set herself afire over inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against her department head. A protest over the self-immolation in Balasore. (PTI) Police said she was allegedly instigated to take the extreme step, and some of the students reportedly filmed her self-immolation and aided the act instead of intervening. The three accused arrested late on Sunday include a member, Jyotiprakash Biswal, and an office bearer, Subhra Sambit Nayak, of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). '...we found their involvement in instigating the woman to take the extreme step,' said a police officer, who did not want to be named. The three accused were produced in a court and remanded in 14-day judicial custody. Biswal was interrogated to reconstruct the events leading to the incident. ABVP national joint organising secretary Govind Nayak refused to comment when asked about Nayak and Biswal. On July 1, the 20-year-old student registered a complaint with the college's Internal Complaints Committee, accusing Samir Kumar Sahoo of sexual harassment. Sahoo had debarred her and eight other students from appearing for an internal examination on June 30, citing their low attendance. The student met the college principal, Dilip Ghose, and Sahoo on July 12 before pouring petrol on herself and self-immolating. She died two days later. Sahoo and Ghose were arrested under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita's sections 108 (abetment to suicide), 75(1)(ii )(demanding sexual favours as a form of sexual harassment), 78 (stalking), 351 (2) (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (common intention). The First Information Report lodged in the case said Sahoo allegedly mentally tortured the 20-year-old for refusing sexual favours. It accused Ghosh of inaction and mentally torturing her, and threatening her to accede, failing which he would rusticate her from the college and fail her in the exam. Ghosh allegedly called her to his office and forced her to apologise to Sahoo and coerced her to withdraw the complaint. The FIR said the behaviour compelled her to set herself afire. A four-member University Grants Commission fact-finding team on Friday completed its probe into the suicide. The state higher education department, the National Commission for Women, and the National Human Rights Commission have also completed their separate probes.
