Sligo Rovers successful in appealing Sam Sargeant's sending off against Shelbourne

Sligo Rovers' appeal against the red card issued to goalkeeper Sam Sargeant during last Saturday's Premier Division clash against Shelbourne has been successful. As a result, Sargeant will be eligible to play for the Bit O' Red in this weekend's league fixture at Richmond Park The 27-year-old netminder was sent off at the Showgrounds after he was adjudged to have handled the ball outside the box by referee Rob Harvey, although replays suggest it may have been on the line. The dismissal compounded a bad night for John Russell's side; their 2-0 defeat ended a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Today saw Sligo's appeal for the wrongful dismissal of their goalkeeper upheld by an an independent appeal committee of the FAI.

Cork City fallout as Malik Dijksteel completes fast-tracked move to St Mirren

Malik Dijksteel sealed his move to St Mirren today having left Premier Division strugglers Cork City under a cloud of controversy. But Rebels boss Ger Nash has wished the Dutchman well, despite going without the winger in last Friday's crucial bottom-of-the-table clash with Sligo Rovers. Dijksteel signed a pre-contract agreement with St Mirren just three days before that Bit O'Red game, and he was due to stay and play in the rest of City's season. Yet there was no sign of Dijksteel for the Turner's Cross shootout which Cork City led 2-0 in before suffering a catastrophic meltdown and losing 3-2 in the dying stages. It was a devastating blow for their top flight survival prospects and after the game, Nash said: 'Malik's agent made it clear that he was unavailable for personal reasons." But following a standoff over the last week, a permanent deal has now been reached ahead of the Scottish Premiership season starting this weekend. And it means Dijksteel will be available for St Mirren in their opening league game away to champions Celtic on Sunday. Today, City boss Nash said: 'I spoke to Malik in the office for an hour on Monday and in my time working with him, Malik was a really good professional. 'St Mirren have got a really good player and I hope the move works out really well for him and he's got a big game this weekend. He's been our best player. He's been a real attacking threat for us and we wanted to pick him.' Nash continued: 'The conversation happened with his agent. It's very difficult for players in a situation where they want to leave, they want to go to a bigger club. 'There's also real life reasons and in terms of Malik, he's a father and where his child lives, that move would make it a lot easier to see his family. 'So there's a lot of human reasons why I completely understand why he wanted to move. I was pretty sad that he's leaving, but it's a good move for him. 'His agent had a conversation which made it clear that Malik had a lot going on in his mind and his personal life. It was clear to us that Malik wasn't in the right frame of mind for such an important game (against Sligo Rovers). 'When you're dealing with those sorts of transfers, it's not easy and whether he was in the right frame of mind was questionable.' Dijksteel isn't the only Cork City player to jump ship from the bottom side this week as defender Milan Mbeng was snapped up by reigning champions Shelbourne. The Frenchman was on Shels radar long before Nash arrived at the club in mid-May and the Rebels boss said: 'It was ongoing.' Nash added: 'When you have a player who has made it clear he wants to leave the club, it's difficult to hang on to them.' Teams and players at the foot of the table tend to find it hard to catch a break and that's precisely the situation Cathal O'Sullivan finds himself in. The exciting Cork City prospect - linked with a host of Premier League clubs in England, and Celtic - suffered a second ruptured ACL of his career last weekend. City confirmed the injury this week and defender Darragh Crowley said of his team-mate yesterday: 'It's a really tough one for him. I had the same injury two years ago and this is his second time doing it. You just have to feel for him. 'At such a young age, everything he had in front of him in the future, it's nine months to a year down the line. But I've no doubt he'll get back to where he was.' We've had quite a big turnaround in terms of personnel. "You've had a new manager come in halfway through the season and I brought my own staff in with me. That's probably one of the big things coming out of this window. 'We've lost people but we've also finished the month with people who want to be at Cork City, and not just want to be here, but they need it to be successful. Wexford comfortable as Sligo Rovers suffer another defeat

It's a tenth defeat of the season for Steve Feeney's side, who were missing 11 players through injury coming into this tie. The Bit O'Red are now two points off Cork City in 11th place in the table, with three wins and a draw in their last five pushing DLR Waves up to ninth in the table. Goals from Della Doherty, Ciara Rossiter and Leah McGrath saw Sean Byrne's side collect a third win in four games, moving into third spot in the table. The visitors were well on top of this tie from early on, with Orlaith Conlon pulling a shot wide with just seconds on the clock. Aoife Kelly's shot was parried away by Bonnie McKiernan on 10 minutes, with the home side just doing enough to block Rossiter's attempt from the follow-up. Rovers were struggling to create any real chances early on, with Maria O'Sullivan in the Wexford goals largely a spectator for the early stages. Bernie Ferreira, in her first start for Steve Feeney's side, did look a threat when on the ball, but Wexford were well armoured to deal with the Northern Ireland underage international. The home side had a lot of defending to do early on, and it stayed that way for most of the first-half as Ellen Molloy, Kylie Murphy and Becky Cassin continued to create chances for the visitors. Rovers' first chance of the game arrived on the half hour mark when teenager Mairead McIntyre worked her way into the Wexford box and with a tricky angle, forced a saved from O'Sullivan who just got her fingertips to it, enough to ensure it went out for a corner. A Wexford goal felt inevitable, and it did arrive on 37 minutes, although the hosts will feel as though they should have done better. A free from the half-way line caused some confusion at the back for Sligo Rovers, with goalkeeper Bonnie McKiernan first coming off her line to try to get to it ahead of Doherty, but the goalkeeper then retreated to her line. Doherty had all the space in the world to fire in to put Wexford ahead, and deservedly so. Wexford almost had a second on 53 minutes when Rovers captain Emma Hansberry was caught in possession by Kelly who then had all the time she needed to charge down on goal, but the shot was brilliantly saved by McKiernan. A minute later and from the resulting corner, Wexford doubled their lead. Ellen Molloy's ball into the box was at first held by McKiernan, who couldn't keep a hold of it, dropping the ball right at the feet of Rossiter who was well placed to ensure it went into the net. A stunning effort from Hansberry, who won an FAI Cup with Wexford in 2015, smacked the crossbar from around 30 yards with 25 left on the clock. Wexford's lead was comfortable and they added a third with five minutes to go when Leah McGrath's stunning effort from the right hit the top corner in what was the goal of the game. Steve Feeney's already lengthy injury list was added to when Keeva Flynn went down in serious discomfort, and there were real fears that the Enniscrone native had suffered an ACL rupture but the initial signs at full-time were more promising, although Flynn is likely to miss some time through injury. Sligo Rovers are not in action this weekend with the semi-finals of the All-Island Sports Cup taking place.
