Turns out, K-pop star Lisa's controversial Met Gala bodysuit didn't feature US activist Rosa Parks
K-pop star and White Lotus actress Lisa made her Met Gala debut on Monday night (May 5), wearing in a sparkly Louis Vuitton blazer and lace bodysuit with embroidered faces – an ensemble that landed her amongst the best dressed celebrities on the red carpet this year. But what appeared to be a nod to the evening's theme 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' – a celebration of Black dandyism, where Black individuals embrace traditionally European tailoring to challenge racial stereotypes – instead sparked controversy online. Netizens were quick to notice what they claimed to be a face resembling American civil rights activist Rosa Parks embroidered on the crotch area of the Blackpink star's bodysuit. Parks was known for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in 1955, an act that sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It's considered a pivotal moment in the US civil rights movement, and the activist was involved in ending racial discrimination and segregation.

Hot Sam's in Detroit gets national recognition for Black style and dandyism
With the 2025 Met Gala highlighting "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," Black fashion is front and center in this year's global style conversation, and one Detroit business is proudly part of that narrative. Hot Sam's, the city's legendary men's clothier, was recently featured in "Vogue" as one of the Black-owned tailoring houses across the country keeping the art of dandyism alive. Founded in 1921, the downtown Detroit shop has served as both a fashion hub and a cultural centerpiece for over a century. "Hot Sam's, we've been in business for 100 years, and all of a sudden, we're in Vogue and they're talking about the Met Gala," said co-owner and CEO Tony Stovall. Ahead of the high-fashion event, the magazine traveled the country spotlighting Black tailors shaping the fashion world. For Stovall, Detroit was an obvious stop. "It all started right here in the D, and we're proud to be part of that," he said. Stovall and his business partner, Cliff Green, bought the iconic shop in 1994 with a mission to keep generations of Black men sharply dressed while introducing younger customers to the art and confidence of tailored fashion. "We think it's important for this next generation to usher in a well-dressed man," said Green, who also serves as Hot Sam's CFO and master tailor. "Because it has a lot to do with your attitude. You dress well on the outside; the inside permeates as well." At Hot Sam's, fashion isn't just sold. It's lived. Green often works his craft behind the scenes, perfecting cuts and fits, while Stovall takes the lead on the floor, helping customers build wardrobes that make statements. The duo agrees that Black culture has always influenced fashion. So, this year's Met Gala theme is right on point. When asked what makes them Detroit proud, Green said it has everything to do with being pioneers in the fashion game. "Fashion actually started in Detroit," said Green. "From Detroit to New York to Chicago, we've always dressed." With a rich legacy and a vision for the future, Hot Sam's continues to tailor Detroit's fashion story one suit at a time.

Did the 2025 Met Gala make history?
The first Monday in May has come and gone, which means it's time to debrief this year's Met Gala. The annual fundraising event, and fashion's biggest night, isn't just about who's wearing what. It's when fashion truly becomes art. And perhaps more than ever this year, it's political. After all, this year's theme is a celebration of Black fashion and style, inspired by professor Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The morning after the Met Gala, Commotion host Elamin Abdelmahmoud talks with J Wortham and Tyler Foggatt about how (well) the theme was interpreted, who understood the assignment, and who missed the mark. How Lupita Nyong'o Became an Aquamarine Dream for the 2025 Met Gala
The actress explains the meaning behind her Chanel fashion and beauty look exclusively to Bazaar Lupita Nyong'o brought a pop of springtime color to the 2025 Met Gala carpet, wearing a custom aquamarine wool jacket and pants, a satin blouse, and a chiffon cape by Chanel. Her go-to makeup artist, Nick Barose, was on hand to create one of the best beauty looks of the night (by Chanel, of course) as was her hairstylist, Vernon François. Together with stylist Micaela Erlanger, Nyong'o's glam team helped perfectly capture the 'Tailored for You' theme of the night, and Bazaar got the exclusive look behind the scenes at their process. 'I am particularly excited to pay homage to the history of Black fashion today. For me, this year's Met Gala theme captures how the Black men of America have insisted on their dignity through dressing with more value than this country has afforded them. Dressing as a radical, defiant, and self-preserving act is something that I learned from my African roots as well as from observing African-America through popular culture,' Nyong'o tells Bazaar. The actress says her muse for the night was Little Richard, 'who was arguably the innovator and originator of Rock 'n' Roll. He inspired countless artists, including The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, John Waters, Elvis, The Beatles, and Billy Porter,' she adds. 'He had a grand personality and refused to shrink. He believed in declaring greatness in order to be great, and he had the audacity to disrupt social norms again and again. I stand on the shoulders of the legacy of bold Black artists like Little Richard, and I am honoured to pay homage to them today with Chanel and my incredible team of creatives.' One such creative is Erlanger, who helped bring this aquamarine moment to life. 'This year's theme celebrates the artistry, elegance, and radical self-expression inherent in Black fashion history. This vision was my inspiration when collaborating with the House of Chanel—ensuring every element from fit to flourish reflected the spirit of Black excellence, elegance, and expression,' says the stylist. 'The sharply tailored suit honors the precision and refinement of classic menswear, while the sweeping cape adds a layer of theatricality—echoing the flair and individuality of the Black dandy tradition. The luminous aqua lurex fabric offers an unexpected twist on classic suiting.' Nyong'o has long made a name for herself as a beauty muse and icon, and tonight's glitzy eyebrow makeup was no exception. 'The inspiration for Lupita's look was Little Richard—the pioneer!' Barose tells Bazaar. 'We kept the makeup quite monochromatic, with various, rich, brown tones, and played up her brows. I achieved this look by intensifying and darkening the brows and then adding various black jewels. Finally, I played up her eyes with a thick, winged-out eyeliner for an extra rockstar effect.' Key products used from Chanel to get the look include the Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation Hydration and Longwear in B140 and BR152, Baume Essentiel Multi-Use Glow Stick in Solar Glow, Stylo Ombre et Contour Eyeshadow – Liner – Khôl in Rouge Noir, Stylo Sourcils Haute Précision Microfine Defining Eyebrow Pencil in Ébène, and the Le Gel Sourcils Longwear Eyebrow Gel in Transparent. Though her hair was covered by a boater hat in the front, the back was a study in hair artistry—far beyond what one would call a ponytail. 'My intention was to think like a seamstress—focusing on the threading, tailoring, and precision that go into true craftsmanship. The hairstyle was designed with couture-level detail, reflecting the care, intention, and discipline behind hand-crafted work,' François tells Bazaar. ' It was a subtle yet powerful tribute to the artistry and storytelling that lies at the heart of Chanel and the evening's theme.' He used the Olaplex No.9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum for heat protection, shine, and styling control, as well as the new Olaplex Scalp Advanced Serum No.5: Scalp Longevity Treatment to prep and nourish the scalp. 'These products helped maintain hair health, especially important when building sculptural styles that still need to feel luxurious and wearable,' the stylist adds. For François, working on this year's Met with Nyong'o felt truly special. 'Every Met Gala is a moment—but this one felt especially meaningful. The theme and exhibit spoke so directly and intentionally to communities that have historically been overlooked or marginalized within the fashion world,' François adds. 'For a museum of this stature to recognize and uplift that narrative is not only powerful, but necessary. And given the current cultural climate, this acknowledgment feels like a step in the right direction—toward greater inclusivity, visibility, and celebration of all forms of beauty.

Gerard Butler to touch down in Riyadh for film premiere
Met Gala pays tribute to Black fashion and designers and includes Rihanna pregnancy surprise NEW YORK: Rihanna shut down a rainy Met Gala on Monday in a pinstripe look and a huge hat, her newly announced baby bump on display after announcing her pregnancy with baby No. 3 earlier in the day. Her Marc Jacobs look included tied sleeves of a men's suit that served as a bustle behind her as she posed for the cameras, the last to walk the carpet as usual. Her hair hung long in a mermaid twist behind her. Men's suiting and tailoring was the evening's theme. It came complete with a tuxedoed choir and lots of women rocking pinstripes and other men's detailing. Emma Chamberlain, Zendaya, Teyana Taylor and many other women went with traditional men's detailing. Chamberlain and Zuri Hall were among those who wore sleek, sexy gowns that play on men's suiting in pinstripes as they walked up the grand steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Zendaya, a co-host last year, wore a perfectly tailored white trouser suit with a matching wide-brim hat from Louis Vuitton. Janelle Monáe epitomized the night's theme, the Black dandy, in exaggerated pinstripes by Thom Browne. Lauryn Hill honored menswear in a butter yellow suit with exaggerated tailoring that screamed Black power. The menswear vibe for women was frequent and expected, 'women wanting to maintain a traditionally feminine dress silhouette while still respecting the theme,' said William Dingle, director of style for a cultural impact agency that focuses on uplifting Black men. Alicia Keys and her husband, Swizz Beatz, leaned WAY in on the pinstripes in red. She rocked a head of bejeweled braids. He rocked a do-rag. Doja Cat, always fearless when it comes to fashion, donned a Marc Jacobs bodysuit look with orange and black wildcat detailing and broad-shouldered pinstripes. Taylor went for a stunning Zoot Suit look with a red, feather-adorned top hat and a huge matching cape dripping with flowers and bling. She collaborated with famed costumer designer Ruth E. Carter. The Zoot was popularized in Harlem in the 1940s. Madonna, 'no stranger to gender-bending fashion,' Dingle said, showed up in a monochrome taupe tuxedo clutching a cigar. It was Tom Ford by Haider Ackermann, the designer who took over when Ford stepped aside. Kylie Jenner, in Ferragamo, mimicked men's tailoring in a gray and black corseted look, while sister Kim Kardashian went embossed black leather dandy, vamping under a tall black hat. Her custom look was by Chrome Hearts. It was low slung and open at the hip with broad straps at the back. Sister Kendall Jenner was in an elegant skirt and jacket, the most subdued of the three. The designer was the British-Nigerian-Brazilian designer Torishéju Dumi. And then there were the bombshells ... Megan Thee Stallion in Michael Kors and Dua Lipa in black Chanel included. Megan's look had a high side slit and floral lace embellishment. Lipa was giving elevated flapper in feathers and an 'S' curl style for her hair. And Miley Cyrus oozed womanhood in a custom cropped black crocodile jacket and long black taffeta skirt by Alaïa. Diana Ross, meanwhile, swallowed the carpet in a huge white train, escorted by her son, Evan Ross. Lizzo debuted blonde hair to go with her pink and black Christian Siriano gown with a plunge at the front. It was so tight at the legs she struggled to walk. Cardi B, who always goes big at the Met Gala, stunned in a low-cut Burberry pantsuit. She showed off a new hairstyle and eye color, appearing to wear green contacts to match her ivy-colored look. The standouts among the men As for the men, co-host A$AP Rocky told The Associated Press that Anna Wintour suggested he wear a Black designer. 'So I wore myself,' the musician said of his custom suit designed by his creative agency, AWGE, complete with a black parka and diamond-crested umbrella. 'Everything is designed by yours truly.' Rocky, Rihanna's partner and dad to their two kids, confirmed to reporters that baby No. 3 in on the way. He spoke about it after Rihanna was photographed walking in the rain with her baby bump out in a blue crop top and skirt. 'It feels amazing, you know,' Rocky said. 'It's time that we show the people what we was cooking up. And I'm glad everybody's happy for us 'cause we definitely happy, you know.' He added: 'Honestly, it's a blessing nonetheless. Because you know how like some people in other situations at times can be envious of other people. But we've been seeing love for the most part. And we real receptive to that and appreciate that, you know what I mean? That's love. Love is love.' The dress code explained What, exactly, was the suggested dress code of the night, 'Tailored for You,' is inspired by Black dandyism. And what, exactly, is the Met Gala for? To raise money for the Met's Costume Institute. The gala raised a record $31 million before it began. Marie Claire, editor in chief of Marie Claire, noted a few trends done well. 'Top trends from the night: Black and white (Zoe Saldaña, Whoopi Goldberg, Gabrielle Union), pinstripes (Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats), suiting (Lupita Nyong'o, Ego Nwodim), hats (Lupita Nyong'o, Whoopi Goldberg and Teyana Taylor).' More on the men Colman Domingo, one of the evening's hosts, wore a pleated, gold adorned cape over a gray and black suit, his jacket a pearled windowpane design with a huge dotted black flower. His look, including his cape and a dotted black scarf at his neck, evoked the late André Leon Talley, the fashion icon who made history as a rare Black editor at Vogue. Domingo, in Valentino, arrived with Vogue's Wintour, dressed in a pastel blue coat over a shimmery white gown by Louis Vuitton, a gala sponsor. Fellow co-chair Lewis Hamilton donned a jaunty ivory tuxedo with a cropped jacket, a matching beret and cowrie shell embellishment. Hamilton's look carried deep meaning. 'The color of ivory denotes purity and status; cowries pass from hand to hand, the regal sash turns shamanic,' he wrote on Instagram. Claire Stern, Elle digital director added: 'Known for championing Black designers, the F1 star once again used his platform to celebrate heritage and creativity on one of fashion's biggest stages.' Domingo has epitomized contemporary dandyism in a variety of looks over the years. Pharrell Williams, another co-host, was demure in a double-breasted, beaded evening jacket and dark trousers. He kept his dark shades on while posing for the cameras. Williams walked with his wife, Helen Lasichanh, in a black bodysuit and matching jacket. Williams, the Louis Vuitton menswear creative director, said his 15,000 pearls were arranged in a pinstripe design and the jacket took 400 hours to construct. Walton Goggins, a guest this year with others from 'The White Lotus,' wore a deconstructed suit look with seams out and a pleated skirt he twirled for the cameras. LeBron James, the NBA superstar, was named honorary chair of the evening but bowed out at the last minute due to a knee injury. Other Met Gala looks that stood out Monica L. Miller, whose book inspired the evening, wore a bejeweled cropped cape over a dress adorned with cowrie shells by Grace Wales Bonner. It's a direct connection to a piece in the gala's companion Metropolitan Museum of Art spring exhibit that Miller guest curated. What other women killed the menswear game? Coco Jones in an ivory tuxedo coat with a train over matching trousers, both covered in chunky embellishment. 'Coco Jones absolutely leaned in,' Dingle said. 'I love the pearl and gem embellishments here, as well as the long coat, and even the necklace. Because she's taller, the long coat even further elongates her legs. This is a fantastic look.' Her look was by Indian designer Manish Malhotra. She said she wanted to honor Black excellence by going all out. Gigi Hadid, on the other hand, went all woman. She pulled up the spirit of Josephine Baker in a shimmery velvet gold halter gown by Miu Miu that hugged her hips, hip hugging being a big trend of the night for the women. Bad Bunny, ever a fashion rebel, wore a custom black Prada suit. The best detail: his woven hat, which appeared to be a reference to the pava, a straw hat associated with the Puerto Rican jíbaro.
