Ballerina first reactions: John Wick spin-off hailed as a ‘worthy addition' to franchise with ‘mind-blowing' action

Fans are eagerly waiting to see how actor Ana de Armas fares in the John Wick spin-off Ballerina. The film had its first screening in London where it was showed to selected members of the press, and if the early reactions are anything to go by than fans can expect a summer blockbuster which promises 'jaw-dropping' action sequences and stunts. (Also read: Tom Cruise is all praise for Ana de Armas-starrer Ballerina amid romance rumours) Reporter Jonathan Sims called Ballerina 'the best movie of the year,' in his tweet, and went on to add: 'Absolute mayhem from start to finish. Mind-blowing fight scenes, phenomenally choreographed and staged. Ana de Armas is an action hero for the ages. A simple revenge story with incredible stunts and improvised weapons, from flame throwers to grenades to ice skates. You have to see it to believe it.' Amon Warmann of Empire Magazine said, 'Really dug #Ballerina! Slickly choreographed action which has lots of variety - Grenades! Flamethrowers! Roller skates! - and Ana de Armas proves she can scrap with the best of them. A worthy addition to the John Wick franchise. More please!' Several press members noted the relentless action sequences in the film. The Nerds of Color said, 'The action's brutal and relentless! De Armas is terrific & I can't wait to be seeing more of Eve soon! Imperfect but worthy installment to the world of Wick.' Meanwhile, Chalice Williams of Black Girl Nerds said, 'Ballerina is hands down one of the top 3 in the John Wick franchise! The action doesn't stop until the credits roll! Ana De Armas is THAT girl! The incredible fight sequences stole the show! Love how the film didn't need Keanu to carry it, it was a force on its own.' Critics noted highly of the film's addition to the John Wick franchise. Chris Bumbray of JoBlo's movie network added, 'Happy to say Ballerina is actually a solid addition to the John Wick franchise, and a good star vehicle for Ana de Armas, who is a born movie star.' Nadya Martinez of GothamGeekGirl noted, 'Ballerina expands the world of #JohnWick with absolutely stunning backdrops, an exciting and gripping vengeful story of consequences, and a heavy arsenal of creative weapon choices and quick-witted resourcefulness.' Ballerina focuses on a young, highly skilled assassin played by Ana de Armas. The story follows her quest for vengeance against those who murdered her family, unfolding between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Halle Berry comments on reprising Storm role in Avengers: Doomsday

Halle Berry has officially shut down any hopes of returning as Storm in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, leaving fans disappointed. Despite speculation and hopes of seeing her return alongside her X-Men co-stars, Berry made it clear that her name would not appear in the film's cast list. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds, Berry addressed the question of reprising her iconic role, stating, 'Keep waiting. It's not going to be there.' The actress, who first portrayed Storm in 2000's X-Men and reprised the role in X2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), last appeared as the weather-controlling mutant in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Avengers: Doomsday, slated for release on May 1, 2026, will feature several actors from the X-Men franchise returning to their iconic roles. The confirmed cast includes Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier (Professor X), Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Notably, Stewart and Grammer have already reprised their characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Stewart's Xavier appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) and Grammer's Beast in a mid-credits scene of The Marvels (2023). While fans had hoped for a reunion of the X-Men cast, Berry's absence from the lineup is a firm reminder that not all of the beloved mutants will make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday.

Halle Berry addresses speculation she'll return as Storm in Avengers: Doomsday

Halle Berry has shut down speculation that she will reprise her role as Storm in Avengers: Doomsday. The cast members of the next Marvel team-up movie were unveiled last week, revealing that Berry's original X-Men co-stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer would be back in their roles. This led many to wonder why Berry had been missed off the list, and fans started to speculate that she would be announced at a later date or be saved as a surprise for the film. However, the Oscar-winning actress had some bad news for Storm fans during an interview with Black Girl Nerds at CinemaCon. When the reporter told her that they were waiting for her name to be announced, she replied, "Keep waiting. It's not going to be there. It's not going to be there." Berry played the weather-manipulating mutant in four X-Men movies from 2000's X-Men to 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. She wasn't the only X-Men cast member to be missing from the original announcement; Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen and Anna Paquin's names were also noticeably absent. However, Marvel bosses have already teased that more cast members will be revealed later, meaning that glaring omissions such as Chris Pratt, Tom Holland and Ryan Reynolds may also be confirmed in the future. Berry previously expressed interest in returning as Storm in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine but Reynolds never officially asked her to be involved. "Blake (Lively) asked me one time - I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show - and she said, 'Would you ever be in my husband's movie as Storm?' I said, 'Yeah, if he asked me,' but he never asked me," she told Avengers: Doomsday is currently filming in London. It will be released in cinemas on 1 May 2026.

Halle Berry addresses possible X-Men return in Avengers: Doomsday

Halle Berry has addressed the return of her X-Men co-stars in the forthcoming Avengers film. The actor was notably missing from the list of actors who would appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is bringing back a number of actors from the films, which were released between 2000 to 2016. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden will all reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto and Cyclops as will Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn as Nightcrawler and Mystique, respectively. Kelsey Grammer will also return as Beast, having shown up in a post-credits sequence for 2024 film The Marvels. But fans were upset to see Berry's name missing from the credits, with many assuming Storm would be a shoo-in to show up. However, hope was kept alive when Marvel suggested more names would be confirmed nearer the film's release, with their roles being filmed in secret. Berry has now shut down the speculation, telling Black Girl Nerds she is 'not going to be there'. Maintaining that she definitely won't be in the film, she added: 'Keep waiting.' The fifth superhero movie in the Avengers franchise is scheduled to be released on 1 Mat 2026, seven years after Avengers: Endgame. Filming has begun. Doomsday 's cast will be led by Robert Downey Jr, the former Iron Man star who is now playing the villain, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. Marvel boss Kevin Feige previously addressed the long wait between the fourth and fifth Avengers films, explaining that greater Marvel output on Disney+ has reduced the need for the ensemble blockbusters. 'The truth is, when we were doing Phase One, Phase Two, and Phase Three, there were [fewer] projects over more years. They were smaller projects and individual character stories, and it felt appropriate at that point, that after every two or three years that it took for a phase, we would do an Avengers film,' he told MTV News in 2022. 'As [Phases] Four, Five and Six were coming together, there are more projects in less years — because of all the amazing stuff we're now allowed to do on Disney+, and getting characters from Fox — Fantastic Four and Deadpool – that it felt like, certainly after Infinity War and Endgame, that we thought Avengers movies aren't cappers.'

Halle Berry Tells ‘X-Men' Fans to ‘Keep Waiting' for Storm to Be Called for ‘Avengers: Doomsday' Cast but Warns: ‘It's Not Going to Be There'

Halle Berry told Black Girl Nerds at CinemaCon that comic book movie fans should not expect to see her name called among the cast for Marvel's 'Avengers: Doomsday.' Several of Berry's original 'X-Men' co-stars were announced as part of the 'Doomsday' cast earlier this month, much to the surprise of fans. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer are all coming back. So what about Berry? 'Fans want to see your name on the chair for the next next announcement of 'Avengers: Doomsday,'' a reporter for Black Girl Nerds told Berry, alluding to the 'Doomsday' livestream announcement where each cast member's name was revealed on the back of a director's chair. 'We didn't see Storm. We want to see your name' More from Variety 'Avengers: Doomsday' Bets Big on 'X-Men,' 'Fantastic Four' and 'Thunderbolts,' but Will Fans Care Without the Original Stars? 'Avengers: Doomsday' Full Cast Revealed: Chris Hemsworth, Channing Tatum, Florence Pugh, Anthony Mackie and More The Russo Brothers Originally 'Said No' to Robert Downey Jr. When He Asked Them to Direct 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Secret Wars': 'We Were Resistant for a While' 'Keep waiting,' Berry answered. 'It's not going to be there. It's not going to be there.' Berry played Storm in four 'X-Men' movies: 2000's 'X-Men,' 2003's 'X2: X-Men United,' 2006's 'X-Men: The Last Stand' and 2014's 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' Marvel has already announced that more 'Doomsday' cast members will be revealed in the future, which left fans hopeful for Berry's return as Storm. However, her latest comments suggest she won't be coming back after all. Not that Berry doesn't want to. She revealed to last year she was never asked by Ryan Reynolds to reprise Storm in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' despite expressing interest. 'Blake [Lively] asked me one time — I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show — and she said, 'Would you ever be in my husband's movie as Storm?' I said, 'Yeah, if he asked me,' but he never asked me,' Berry said about Lively's husband Ryan Reynolds. Berry was far from the only beloved Marvel actor not included in the 'Avengers: Doomsday' cast announcement. Fans also did not see Chris Pratt's name. Pratt's Star Lord has been a fan favorite since the original 'Guardians of the Galaxy' filmed opened in 2017. 'I don't know! I think it was, like, far off,' Pratt recently joked to Collider about his missing 'Doomsday' chai. 'They must have cut away from it. I don't know what happened. I don't know. It was there. I'm sure it was there.' Pratt previously said on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' that 'the last time you saw Star-Lord there was a promise that Star-Lord would return,' referring to the end credits of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. 'All I can say is we will make good on that promise. I feel like there's a Marvel sniper somewhere. I will say no more.' 'Avengers: Doomsday' is now in production and is opening in theaters May 1, 2026.
