Resort's bus services receive £4m cash boost

Bus passengers in Blackpool are set to benefit from a £4m investment designed to encourage more people to use public transport. Planned improvements include a major upgrade of bus shelters in the town, and installing more real-time information screens. The work will go ahead after the spending plans were approved by Blackpool Council's executive committee. Town hall bosses are keen for more people to use public transport following the recent announcement that 3,000 Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) staff will be moving to Blackpool, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said. Blackpool Council, which owns Blackpool Transport, also hopes increased bus use will help the local authority meet its environmental targets. A report for the council said it would also "contribute to improved local air quality and to climate change objectives". Planned improvements include: Enhancements to the bus service Bus lanes on Talbot Road A deep clean and repairs to bus shelters, or replacing worn-out ones Providing more real-time information (RTI) screens at town-centre bus shelters The Bus Grant Delivery Plan is supported by funding from the Department for Transport, which in December handed out £955m to support bus services across England. The report stated: "Local bus services are a vital resource for less able people and children/young people in Blackpool's community. "Clearly the economic impact of having to use taxis and private hire to get around town has a disproportionate impact on partially sighted, less ambulant and poorer members of society. "Bus use, especially on newer cleaner buses and electric buses, is more sustainable than private car use." The award winning beaches to visit this weekend as temperatures remain high

Life will be a beach this weekend as the hot weather continues. And lucky for us we have some of the best beaches in the country — not too far from our doorstep. Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of the prestigious Blue Flag and Seaside Awards for summer 2025. pa The beaches flying the Seaside Awards Flag are: • Blackpool South - Blackpool Council • Blackpool Central- Blackpool Council • Bispham - Blackpool Council • St Annes Pier - Fylde Borough Council • Morecambe South Beach - Lancaster City Council • North Beach – Morecambe - Lancaster City Council • Fleetwood Ferry Beach* - Wyre Borough Council • Fleetwood Marine Beach - Wyre Borough Council • Rossall Beach* - Wyre Borough Council • Jubilee Beach, Cleveleys - Wyre Borough Council Blackpool South Beach Blackpool South Beach offers a wide stretch of sand and is generally a quieter beach than others in Blackpool. South of the beach sits Blackpool's pleasure beach, a large amusement park, meaning the beach is a great day out for the kids and those who enjoy rides. Blackpool Central Blackpool Central Beach is situated in the town centre. The seafront features three large piers, and the famous Blackpool tower. With deckchairs available for hire, you are in for a relaxing day out. St Annes beach by Sadaquat Khan. Bispham Bispham is situated between Blackpool North shore and the Cleveleys and is a nice beach to escape the holiday crowds in Blackpool. The beach features a promenade allowing you to walk along the man-made sea defenses, and features views along the coast and out towards the Irish sea. St Annes Pier St Annes Pier is the seaside town of Lytham, only 5 miles down the road from Blackpool. The beach features cafes, children's amusements, pitch and putt golf, a paddling pool, bandstand and a small train. The beach also includes seafront promenade gardens, including a waterfall, pond and ducks. There's also lots of sand, meaning it is the perfect place for children to build sandcastles. Morecambe South and North Beach Morecambe South and North Beaches feature the largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sand in the UK, covering 120 square miles, therefore there's definitely enough room for the whole family! The beaches are backed by rock sea defences. There is art and games for children along the promenade, and the statue of Eric Morecambe also sits on the prom. However, Morecambe is known for their fast-moving tides, so make sure to not get too relaxed! Nevertheless, when the tides come in there is a cinema, bowling alley and amusements to keep you busy. Fleetwood Ferry Beach Fleetwood Ferry beach features views of Morecombe Bay, it features sandflats and marshes, which attract many birds, being the perfect spot for wildlife enthusiasts. The beach also features two original Victorian lighthouses, and a ferry, which can take you to Knott end, where there are spots for food and ice cream. Rossall Beach Rossall Beach is located on the northern side of the promenade at Cleveleys. The beach consists of sand and pebbles and on a clear day great views, being able to see the hills and mountains of the lake district, and to the south the Blackpool tower. Jubilee Beach Jubilee beach, Cleveleys, is four miles north of Blackpool. The beach is famous for its sand and sunsets, and with its multi-award-winning promenade, which just received a £26 million renovation in 2010, it is definitely worth the visit. READ MORE: 5 of the best beaches within a two-hour drive from Bolton Stunning beaches to visit this weekend Liverpool's Albert and Salthouse Docks is the only Blue Flag holding marina in the country. The Blue Flag is the world's most recognised award for beaches, marinas and inland bathing waters and, to qualify, each applicant must meet and maintain a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria. Blue Flag beaches are also free for all to enjoy. Meaning, visitors should expect the same quality as destinations like Spain or Trinidad and Tobago, without the price tag. Keep Britain Tidy's Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: 'In England we are lucky enough to have some of the best beaches in the world. It's wonderful to see the Seaside Award flying proudly over 10 of them in the North West, as well as a Blue Flag at Liverpool's iconic Albert and Salthouse docks, demonstrating their quality to residents and visitors alike. 'The awards are a credit to the collective efforts of beach and site managers, volunteers, residents and businesses who should take pride today in their tireless efforts to maintain and improve some of our best-loved and most popular blue spaces.'
