Amy Poehler recalls playing Will Arnett's sister while married in Blades of Glory

Amy Poehler recently shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes story about working with her then-husband, Will Arnett, on Blades of Glory. Speaking on the April 23 episode of the Las Culturistas podcast, Poehler, 53, recalled playing Arnett's sister in the 2007 figure skating comedy — despite being married in real life at the time. 'That was really fun,' Poehler said, laughing. 'Will Arnett and I played brother and sister, but we were actually married in real life. When they tested the movie, audiences hated Stranz and Fairchild.' Poehler and Arnett portrayed rival skaters Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, who tried to take down the main characters played by Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. Podcast hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers were surprised by the audience reaction, but Poehler pointed out, 'We were like, 'Well, we're the villains!'' She added that directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck stood by their performances, keeping most of their scenes in the final cut. Besides Blades of Glory, Poehler and Arnett often crossed paths professionally, even appearing on each other's sitcoms, Parks and Recreation and Arrested Development. The couple, who share sons Archie and Abel, separated in 2012 and finalized their divorce in 2016. Despite their split, they've stayed on good terms. Earlier this year, Arnett even gave a sweet (and funny) shoutout to Poehler's new podcast Good Hang. Poehler also made a surprise appearance on Arnett's Smartless podcast, joking about their continued connection.

Amy Poehler And Will Arnett Discussed Co-Parenting And What Their Relationship Is Like Nowadays

Will Arnett and Amy Poehler reunited on the former's Smartless podcast. The pair married in 2003 and even acted alongside one another in projects like Arrested Development and Blades of Glory. They share two sons, Archie and Abel, born in 2008 and 2010 respectively. However, they split in 2012, with Amy writing in her memoir two years later, "I don't want to talk about my divorce because it is too sad and too personal." Amy is currently dating former New York Times editor Joel Lovell, while Will is dating businesswoman Alessandra Brawn, with whom he had a child in 2020. In a new episode currently available for subscribers, Amy surprised Will as the guest for the 250th episode of Smartless with cohosts Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes. She told him, 'Our youngest saw my schedule on the kitchen table and said, 'You're doing Smartless? Does Dad know?' And I said, 'No, don't say anything.'" Will appeared sufficiently surprised, responding, 'Amy and I were texting last night about something else. Zero [clue].' Elsewhere in the episode, Will discussed what he's learned about parenting from Amy. 'I have to try really hard — Amy you're really good at this and you help me do this in concert with you — to remember to listen to what they're saying and to not try to impose what I think, 'You need this, you need that,' Will said. 'To actually sit and listen to what your kid is trying to say. Encourage them to, as much as they can, to speak. I don't come by it naturally because that's not how I was raised.' As for their co-parenting dynamic, he said, 'I am really proud of it. Of course, things take a minute because everybody is sort of adjusting to what it is. I'm also very proud of, certainly as parents, what we've been able to do. That has been really important to both of us. I'm really, really lucky to have her as a partner in this way." "There aren't many people I speak to more than I speak to her, which is weird, you know what I mean. But it's great. I feel really lucky," he continued. "She's the person that I go like, 'Hey, I'm thinking about doing this.' Whether it's life or work and I really seek her counsel because it's important to me because I trust her. She's awesome.'

Will Ferrell Says Some Fans Were 'Not Too Happy' He Went to NHL Game as Grumpy Buddy the Elf (Exclusive)

Will Ferrell knows he ruffled some feathers with his surprise appearance as Buddy the Elf at an NHL game in December. In a moment that went viral, Ferrell, 57, dressed up as his lovable, innocent character from the 2003 holiday classic Elf — and watched the Los Angeles Kings play the Philadelphia Flyers while scowling, drinking beer and holding a cigarette. 'Some people were not too happy, though,' Ferrell tells PEOPLE. 'They thought, 'Please be true to the character. That was not cool.'' 'Buddy was having a bad day. Yeah. He just went to a hockey game, smoked cigarettes and drank beer,' Ferrell jokes about the character's mindset. 'That was just — I get these weird ideas every now and then. We're season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass, which are amazing," he said. "I told my wife, 'Over the break, it would be funny if I just got a Buddy the Elf costume and didn't shave for like a week, and I'm just sitting there with a candy cigarette and I'm just gonna sit there for a period and see how people react.' And that was it.' During Ferrell's PEOPLE interview with Reese Witherspoon, his costar in the new comedy You're Cordially Invited, she asks him if he still has the costume from the movie. When he replies that he doesn't, she asks, 'Where'd you get your Buddy costume? Amazon?' 'I did,' says Ferrell. 'People were commenting like, 'I love that he's just in a cheap Buddy costume from Amazon,' which is true.' He clashes with Margo (Witherspoon), whose sister is getting married at the same venue, which accidentally double-booked the weddings. You're Cordially Invited is now streaming on Prime Video.
