Sister and brother charged with money laundering over smishing scam

It was alleged the funds were withdrawn through ATM transactions on O'Connell Street in the city centre A sister and brother have been accused of money laundering over the transfer and withdrawal of €2,500 that had been stolen in a smishing scam. Michela Juravle and Andri Eugen are alleged to have been in possession of the proceeds of criminal conduct. Their cases were adjourned at Blanchardstown District Court for the accused to decide how they intend to plead to the charges. Michela Juravle (28), of Mill Park, Clondalkin, and her brother Andri Eugen (22), of Aylmer Grove, Newcastle, Dublin, are both charged with money laundering. A garda told Judge Áine Clancy the DPP consented to the case being dealt with at district court level, subject to jurisdiction being considered. Outlining the allegations, the garda said the victim of a smishing fraud had €9,000 taken from her account on November 15, 2021, and on the same day, €2,570 of this was transferred to Michela Juvrale's Revolut account. Judge Clancy accepted jurisdiction, allowing it to remain in the district court instead of sending it forward to the circuit court, which has greater sentencing powers on conviction. She adjourned the case to a date in September, for the accused to consider pleas. She ordered disclosure of prosecution evidence to the defence and remanded the accused on continuing bail.

Man promised €500 to hand over control of bank account in fraud scheme

Alex O'Brien Kelly (24) later told gardaí he did not know why his account was being taken over by other individuals A warehouse worker was promised €500 in cash if he handed over control of his bank account to other individuals in an invoice redirect fraud scheme, a court heard. Alex O'Brien Kelly (24) later told gardaí he did not know why his account was being taken over by other individuals. His solicitor said that O'Brien Kelly was a vulnerable young man, who was just turned 18 when this incident took place. Judge David McHugh ordered the defendant to repay the company €2,100, which was its loss. Judge McHugh also ordered O'Brien Kelly to complete 80 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison. The defendant, with an address at Whitechapel Grove, Coolmine, Dublin 15, admitted a money-laundering offence, in that he allowed his bank account to be used for acquiring, transferring, handling or possessing the sum of €4,730, which was the proceeds of crime. Detective Garda Mark Wall told Blanchardstown District Court that this was an invoice redirect fraud which impacted a Co Kilkenny-based company on June 6, 2019. Det Gda Wall said that the company transferred €4,730 to a bank account, which they believed was a new client account. However, gardaí later discovered that the account belonged to O'Brien Kelly. Det Gda Wall said that the company contacted its bank when the fraud was realised, and the defendant's account was frozen, but not before €2,100 was taken from the account. The balance of the money was returned to the company, the court heard. Stock image News in 90 Seconds - 5th June 2025 Det Gda Wall said that gardaí obtained CCTV footage, and O'Brien Kelly did not take the money from the account. The court heard that O'Brien Kelly had seven previous convictions, mostly for drug-related offences. Defence solicitor Valerie Buckley said the defendant was only 18 years at the time of this incident, which took place nearly six years ago. Ms Buckley said O'Brien Kelly was a vulnerable young man, who she believed suffered cognitive difficulties, though she had no proof to provide to the court. Ms Buckley said O'Brien Kelly was now working in a warehouse for a large clothing retailer, and was willing to repay the money. She also said the defendant wished to apologise to the court for his behaviour. Judge McHugh adjourned the case to a date next January, saying O'Brien Kelly must repay the money or he faced going to jail

Driver who rear-ended couple's car and shouted aggressively at them banned from road

Igor Rusu (49) was driving his friend's car and bringing him to hospital when the accident occurred A driver jumped out of a vehicle and started shouting aggressively at a couple, after he rear-ended their car at a red light, a court heard. Igor Rusu (49) was driving his friend's car and bringing him to hospital when the accident occurred. He was highly intoxicated, his lawyer said, but he refused to provide a blood sample to gardaí. Judge McHugh disqualified Rusu from driving for four years and ordered him to complete 100 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison Judge David McHugh said this was an appalling episode, and he could only imagine it must have been traumatic for the couple in the other vehicle. Judge McHugh disqualified Rusu from driving for four years and ordered him to complete 100 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison. The defendant, with an address at Laverna Avenue in Castleknock, admitted failing to provide a blood sample to gardaí, as well as failing to produce his insurance or driving licence to gardaí. Sergeant Maria Callaghan told Blanchardstown District Court gardaí were flagged down by a motorist on the Old Lucan Road in Palmerston shortly after 8pm on February 15, 2023. Sgt Callaghan said the driver, a passenger in the car, said his wife had been stopped at a red light when they were rear-ended by a grey Honda Civic. Sgt Callaghan said the Honda driver got out of the car and started shouting aggressively at the couple, before trying to abscond. When the gardaí saw Rusu, he was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet, and he also became aggressive towards gardaí. The court heard he had no previous convictions. Trial for couple accused of child neglect after boy (6) found asleep on floor by gardaí

Gardaí found the defendants intoxicated and there was evidence of drug use, it is alleged A couple accused of child neglect after a six-year-old boy was found sleeping on a floor in his school uniform have been sent forward for trial. The boy's younger sibling was sitting in a buggy in front of a TV, wearing a soiled nappy, and a third child was still awake and appeared 'dishevelled' when gardaí conducted a welfare check in the early hours of the morning. Gardaí found the defendants intoxicated and there was evidence of drug use, it is alleged. The couple, who are in their 30s and cannot be named to protect the children, are facing charges of child neglect. They were served with the book of evidence when they appeared before Blanchardstown District Court. The DPP had directed summary trial of the allegations in the district court but Judge David McHugh, after hearing a summary of the evidence, refused jurisdiction. The couple was remanded on continuing bail to appear before the circuit court in July. Defence solicitors Margaret McEvilly and Aengus McCarthy and two junior counsel were assigned on free legal aid.
