Bruce Springsteen Shares ‘Faithless' From Soundtrack to Unmade ‘Spiritual Western'

Twenty years ago, Bruce Springsteen was approached by a filmmaker about creating the soundtrack to a 'spiritual Western' called Faithless that had yet to be filmed. He began penning material for it at the conclusion of the Devils and Dust tour in late 2005, and wound up with 11 songs, including four instrumentals. But the movie never went into production, the songs were placed in the vault, and not even the most devoted Springsteen fan that ever existed. The complete Faithless soundtrack is finally coming out June 27 as one of the seven discs on Tracks II: The Lost Albums, and the title track was shared with fans on Thursday. (The movie remains unmade, and the filmmaker behind it remains unknown.) 'This was a really unusual collection of songs,' Springsteen says in a statement, noting that he wrote the songs at his home in Florida over a period of just two weeks, even though the movie was little more than an idea at that point. 'You could recognize details and maybe a character or two. But for the most part, I just wrote atmospheric music that I thought would fit.' Record of His Dreams The album is largely a solo project, but there are appearances by Patti Scialfa, producer Ron Aniello, E Street Band violist Soozie Tryell, and longtime background singers Lisa Lowell, Curtis King, Jr., Michelle Moore, and Ada Dyer. Springsteen and Scialfa's two sons, Sam Springsteen and Evan Springsteen, also contributed to the album. 'Faithless' is the third Tracks II: The Lost Albums track that Springsteen has unveiled over the past three weeks. He's also shared 'Rain in the River' from his late 1990s/early 2000s LP Perfect World, and 'Blind Spot' from his infamous shelved 1994 'drum loop' album, which is now known as Streets of Philadelphia Sessions. 'The Lost Albums were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,' Springsteen said in a statement when the project was announced. 'I've played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I'm glad you'll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.' Springsteen's last live appearance took place on April 26 when he joined Smokey Robinson, John Fogerty, Tom Morello, Jackson Browne, Nils Lofgren, Darlene Love, and Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul for an incredible night of music at the third annual American Music Honors at Monmouth University. On May 14, he kicks off a European stadium tour in Manchester, England. It wraps up July 3 in Milan, Italy. Bruce Springsteen Jams With John Fogerty, Tom Morello, Smokey Robinson at American Music Honors

The American Music Honors, an annual event organized by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center, took place Saturday at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, this year honoring Smokey Robinson, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, Tom Morello, and Joe Ely. Every honoree with the exception of Joe Ely was on site to receive the award, as well as perform their classic songs with help from Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, Bruce Springsteen, and surprise guests Jackson Browne, Nils Lofgren, Nora Guthrie, and Darlene Love. In other words, an all-star event on par with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was staged in front a mere 714 people on a college campus, and there's no plans to air it on television. Fortunately, phones were allowed, and there's lots of fan footage. (Let's give a special shoutout to Dr. Marty Jablow for his great camera work.) Record of His Dreams Brad Paisley on That Time Charley Pride Surprised Him at the White House Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams was the host for the evening, and Springsteen personally delivered the induction speeches for Ely and Fogerty. In a revival of some of the best moments from the 2004 Vote For Change tour, Springsteen performed the Creedence classics 'Bad Moon Rising,' 'Proud Mary,' and 'Fortunate Son' with Fogerty. Springsteen also covered Joe Ely's 1995 song 'All Just to Get to You,' and teamed up with Smokey Robinson for 'Going to a Go-Go,' Jackson Browne for 'Take It Easy,' and Tom Morello for 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' and 'Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.' At the end of the night, everyone from the show came back onstage along with Darlene Love and Nora Guthrie for 'This Land Is Your Land.' The Woody Guthrie classic was a regular part of Springsteen's live show in the Eighties, but it's become a rarity these days. He last performed it in 2013. Next month, Springsteen and the E Street Band head over to Europe for a run of 16 stadium shows. And on June 27, Tracks II: The Lost Albums – a collection of seven complete records Springsteen recorded between 1983 and 2018 – is finally coming out after years of feverish anticipation. The Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, staring Jeremy Allen White, is also due out before the end of the year. It focuses on the creation of 1982's Nebraska, and also stars Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Gaby Hoffmann, Marc Maron, and Stephen Graham. Bruce Springsteen Shares Unreleased ‘Blind Spot' From ‘Tracks II: The Lost Albums'

Bruce Springsteen has shared his unreleased song 'Blind Spot,' the 'thematic center' of his Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, one of the seven LPs that have been unearthed for the upcoming Tracks II: The Lost Albums. Informally known as the 'Drum Loop' album and inspired by contemporary music like hip-hop at the time, Streets of Philadelphia Sessions was recorded in the mid-Nineties at Springsteen's Los Angeles home, with Springsteen serving as the primary instrumentalist with some help from his touring band at the time. Record of His Dreams Bruce Springsteen Announces 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' Box Set Bruce Springsteen's High School Buddy Immortalized in 'Glory Days' Dead at 75 'Blind Spot,' like much of the Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, focuses on doubt and betrayal in a relationship. 'That was just the theme that I locked in on at that moment,' Springsteen said in a statement of the song. 'I don't really know why. Patti and I, we were having a great time in California. But sometimes if you lock into one song you like, then you follow that thread. I had 'Blind Spot,' and I followed that thread through the rest of the record.' Although Streets of Philadelphia Sessions were completed and mixed for a spring 1995 release, Springsteen opted to shelve the album and instead reunite with the E Street Band. 'I said, 'Well, maybe it's time to just do something with the band, or remind the fans of the band, or that part of my work life,'' Springsteen added. 'So that's where we went. But I always really liked 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions'…during the Broadway show, I thought of putting it out [as a standalone release]. I always put them away, but I don't throw them away.' Tracks II, due out June 27, begins with L.A. Garage Sessions '83, which Springsteen recorded in the interim between Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. The box set also features Somewhere North of Nashville — from that aforementioned E Street reunion in May 1995 — and Inyo, a collection of songs from the road while promoting The Ghost of Tim Joad between 1995 and 1997. Perfect World spotlights several songs he wrote with longtime collaborator Joe Grushecky, the songs on Faithless were recorded in 2005 and 2006 for a film that has yet to be made, and Twilight Hours was created at the same time as Western Stars in 2018 and is essentially a companion album. 'The Lost Albums were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,' Springsteen previously said in a statement. 'I've played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I'm glad you'll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.' Hear Bruce Springsteen's Rockabilly ‘Repo Man' From ‘Tracks II' Box Set

Bruce Springsteen has shared another unreleased preview from his upcoming Tracks II: The Lost Albums box set, this time unveiling 'Repo Man,' a track from the country-inspired Somewhere North of Nashville that he recorded at the same time as 1995's The Ghost of Tom Joad. As opposed to the 'socially conscious' and largely acoustic The Ghost of Tom Joad, the rockabilly rocker 'Repo Man' finds Springsteen having some honky tonk fun in the studio alongside a band that features Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Gary Mallaber and pedal steel player Marty Rifkin, all of whom also played on Tom Joad. Those sessions completely overlap each other. I'm singing 'Repo Man' in the afternoon and 'The Line' at night. So the country record got made right along with The Ghost of Tom Joad,' Springsteen said in a statement. ''Streets of Philadelphia' got me connected to my socially conscious or topical songwriting. So that's where The Ghost of Tom Joad came from. But at the same time I had this country streak that was also running through those sessions and I ended up making a country record on the side.' In addition to 'Repo Man,' Somewhere North of Nashville also boasts 'Stand On It' and 'Janey Don't You Lose Heart,' two tracks that dated back to the Born in the U.S.A. sessions, as well as the title track and 'Tiger Rose,' another known outtake from the Tom Joad era. Tracks II, due out June 27, begins with L.A. Garage Sessions '83, which Springsteen recorded in the interim between Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. The box set also features Streets of Philadelphia Sessions (with 'Blind Spot') and Inyo, a collection of songs from the road while promoting The Ghost of Tim Joad between 1995 and 1997. 'The Lost Albums were full records, some of them even to the point of being mixed and not released,' Springsteen previously said in a statement. 'I've played this music to myself and often close friends for years now. I'm glad you'll get a chance to finally hear them. I hope you enjoy them.' Bruce Springsteen's new song 'Faithless' from 'Tracks 2' is redemption with quiet baptism

The power of love can bring faith to the 'Faithless.' Bruce Springsteen debuted the title track from the unreleased 'Faithless' soundtrack for a never-made film, on Thursday, May 1. It's part of the upcoming 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' box set, due Friday, June 27. In the song, a solitary figure is walking in twilight, faithless, as framed by gentle-yet-yearning acoustic and slide guitars. Redemption comes with a quiet baptism of love in this moving Western ballad. Listen to the track here. The 'Faithless' album is a solo work recorded over two weeks in Florida between the conclusion of the 'Devils & Dust' tour in November 2005 and the release of 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions' in April 2006. Producer Ron Aniello, touring E Street Band members Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Curtis King, Jr., Michelle Moore and Ada Dyer, and Springsteen family members Patti Scialfa and sons Evan Springsteen and Sam Springsteen assisted with the project. The album is described as 'a meditation on purpose, belief and acceptance — intended to accompany a film described as a 'spiritual Western.' ' in a Thursday news release. 'This was a really unusual collection of songs,' said Springsteen in a statement. 'You could recognize details and maybe a character or two. But for the most part, I just wrote atmospheric music that I thought would fit.' The 'Faithless' album includes four instrumental tracks. The song 'Faithless' is the third to be shared from 'Tracks II' following 'Rain in the River' from the lost album 'Perfect World,' and 'Blind Spot' from 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions.' Springsteen's upcoming 'Tracks II: The Lost Albums' includes 83 songs on the seven unreleased albums recorded between 1983 and 2018.
