Cottondale aiming for first playoff victory since 2002

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Cottondale High School baseball team is preparing to host Blountstown in the Rural Regional Quarterfinals after a second consecutive district title. Facing challenges with missing key players throughout the season, the Hornets entered the year with a goal of simply reaching the postseason. Now, after capturing back-to-back district titles for the first time in program history, a new reality has been set: the Hornets are no longer considered underdogs. Head coach Skylar Davis feels the recognition has been earned, even if the feeling is unfamiliar. 'We had to get adjusted to a new role,' Davis said. 'We're not really the underdogs right now for the first time. I mean, I still feel like we're underdogs every game. But, you know, we've won the district two years in a row.' 'I feel like at the beginning of the year, we played with a lot of pressure because we hadn't experienced the expectations. But it took a while, and towards the end of the year, we got confident and started clicking.' Davis said. Even without star pitcher Cam Odom, adversity was overcome and a playoff run was secured. That resilience will now be tested against Blountstown, a small-town rival. 'We just kind of felt that it was time to go in or go home,' junior pitcher Lane Johnson said. 'A few weeks before our season ended, we started clicking, getting some hits, winning some big games. And it's just, we kind of feel it now. So we're looking to go there Monday and show who is the best ballclub.' Cottondale will host Blountstown in the best-of-three series starting on Monday, April 28. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Blountstown freshman Bryson White turns heads on the track

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – Blountstown freshman, Bryson White took first in the men's 110 hurdles, defeating athletes up to four years older. Bryson White, a second-year hurdler and Junior Olympian, is making an immediate impact in his first high school track season. However, his athletic journey did not begin with running. 'I started in baseball, and I liked racing my teammates,' White said. 'That's when I really got into track and competing.' White competed in middle school but took a leap of faith in eighth grade, deciding to try hurdles, an adjustment that ultimately led him to placing 16th out of nearly 70 competitors at the Junior Olympics this past August. 'The hurdle height was a challenge at first,' White said. 'It's important to train your mind to stay focused during the race. You have to push through each hurdle and keep your form.' Now, as a freshman, White has already achieved major success and has no plans to slow down over the next three years at Blountstown High School. 'I want to accomplish some goals, and break some school records,' he said. 'I just want to be the best.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Panhandle coaching legend, Ellerbee retires again

BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. (WMBB) – After leading the Blountstown girls basketball team to the program's first Final Four, head coach John Ellerbee announced his retirement on Monday. After a 25-year coaching hiatus, Ellerbee came out of retirement to coach the Lady Tigers this past season. Blountstown finished 20-7 overall, with a district championship and their first regional championship ever. Before his first retirement in 1999, Ellerbee led the Malone boys basketball program to two state championships (1991, 1994) and a state runner-up finish (1993). Ellerbee said in a statement on Monday, 'I want to focus my attention on my grandchildren and family. I also plan on traveling, fishing, and hunting. I was blessed to coach these young ladies this year and experience them becoming a team.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
