Give Blood: Save A Life, Boost Yours

WACO and TYLER, TX (FOX 44) — We are a day away from your chance to save a life through the FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive! The event will take place this Friday at the FOX 44 parking lot, located at 8803 Woodway Drive, from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. For as long as supplies last, each donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream – 'A Pint for a Pint'. 'It's a win-win for the donor and the patient, mainly because you're helping someone's life,' said Clinton McCoy, Carter BloodCare's Director of Mobile Recruitment and Regional Operations. 'The great thing is you get a great mini-physical. We're going to check your blood pressure, your pulse, we're going to check your hemoglobin levels, check your temperature. You get that free cholesterol check. You get the free health checkup, you feel good after donating, and you get free juice and cookies – which is always a positive in my world.' Then there's the impact you will have on the lives you'll help save. McCoy shared with me a story that impacts him to this day. 'We were talking with one of our hospital partners, and they're expanding facilities, and they're [like], 'Hey, want to make sure we have blood at this hospital,' and we're talking through the operations, the logistics, the business side of how do get that done,' McCoy said. ''In that moment,' that lab director said, 'You know, I just want to say thank y'all.' And I said, 'You're welcome. I'm happy to do this work for you.' She said, 'No, thank you – because this weekend we had a patient come in, young patient came in, gunshot wound, used over 175 units of blood. One patient, and he is still alive – because your team was able to get us every single unit we ordered.' She said, 'Y'all made probably 15 to 20 trips in two days just for this one patient, and that means a lot.'' Carter BloodCare provides a Frequently Asked Questions page on its website to help you make a decision to save a life. While no appointment is necessary, you can schedule an appointment online here. Give Blood, Save Lives: Get Answers

TYLER / WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — There's only a couple of days until your opportunity to save a life with the FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive! This event will take place this Friday at FOX 44's parking lot, located at 8803 Woodway Drive. Let's take a look at some of the questions surrounding donating blood. For some, donating blood brings a smile and a sense of satisfaction. 'It's a win-win for the donor and the patient, mainly because you're helping save someone's life,' said Clinton McCoy, Director of Mobile Recruitment & Regional Operations for Carter BloodCare. This doesn't mean there aren't still questions and myths which might hold some people back from donating blood. One of the most common surrounds tattoos. 'One of the big ones is that I have a tattoo – I can't donate blood. That used to be true,' McCoy said. 'It used to be if you got a tattoo there was a risk for hepatitis, infection and things of that nature. The FDA has gone through it. The cleanliness and the testing that we have now is very precise, and there is no deferral for a tattoo as long as you got it in a state licensed facility. So again, the state is licensing you to say that this facility is clean and the risk is low, so it is now considered a low-risk behavior for infectious disease.' McCoy says the biggest barrier involves just saying a few words that few people say. 'Nobody asks,' McCoy stressed. 'That's the number one reason. You ask somebody, 'Why haven't you donated blood?,' and most people will tell you, 'Nobody asked me to.' So that's our job today – to ask people to come out to donate blood.' Carter BloodCare provides a Frequently Asked Questions page on its website to help you make a decision to save a life. The FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive will start at 7:30 a.m. and run until 6:30 p.m. For as long as supplies last, each donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream – 'A Pint for a Pint'. Donating Blood: A Lifesaving Process

TYLER, TX (FOX 44) — It's only three days until your opportunity to save a life with the FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive! The event will take place at FOX 44's parking lot this Friday, June 13, located at 8803 Woodway Drive. Let's take a look at what happens to the blood after you donate. Part of this process is the storing of the blood. At Carter BloodCare's Tyler Donation Center, its freezer is kept at 27 below zero. Clinton McCoy with Carter Bloodcare says the storage and processing of the donated blood is quite thorough. 'After donation, we bring it back to our processing center, so each donation is separated into red cell, plasma and platelets – those are the three components of human blood – and then each one of those can go to a different patient, so they're stored differently,' McCoy says. 'Temperatures are different for the storage of each of them, and we do infectious disease testing on each of the products. Then we have them ready and we ship them to hospitals as they order for the patients.' The FOX 44/Carter BloodCare Blood Drive will start at 7:30 a.m. and run until 6:30 p.m. For as long as supplies last, each donor will receive a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream – 'A Pint for a Pint'.
