UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooting: Luigi Mangione Pleads Not Guilty

Originally appeared on E! Online Luigi 's case is moving forward. Four months after the 26-year-old was charged in connection with the Dec. 4 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, he pleaded not guilty to federal charges April 25, according to NBC News reporters in the courtroom. After presiding Judge Margaret Garnett read aloud his charges—two counts of stalking, one count of murder through a firearm, as well as one count of firearms offense for an allegation that he used a silencer—Mangione replied, "Not guilty." Mangione's next hearing is set for Dec. 5, which is when a trial date will be set. However, lead defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo requested that Mangione's federal case—which is running simultaneously with his state cases in New York and Pennsylvania—go to trial first since it carries the possibility of a death sentence. His plea entry comes four months after he pleaded not guilty to murder and terrorism charges brought by New York state prosecutors. (In Pennsylvania, he is facing five charges, where he has not entered a plea yet.) More from E! "Luigi Mangione's murder of Brian Thompson—an innocent man and father of two young children—was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," Bondi said in a statement April 1. "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again." Following the news, Friedman Agnifilo slammed the Justice Department for "defending the broken, immoral and murderous healthcare industry." "By seeking to murder Luigi Mangione, the Justice Department has moved from the dysfunctional to the barbaric," she wrote in a statement to NBC News. "Their decision to execute Luigi is political." "We are prepared to fight these federal charges, brought by a lawless Justice Department, as well as the New York State charges, and the Pennsylvania charges, and anything else they want to pile on Luigi," she continued. "Luigi is caught in a high-stakes game of tug-of-war between state and federal prosecutors, except the trophy is a young man's life." For his part, Mangione expressed his gratitude for the support he's received while he's incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. "I am overwhelmed by—and grateful for—everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support," he wrote on his website in February. "While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future." Keep reading for a breakdown of what we know about the killing of Brian Thompson. (E! and NBC News are both part of the NBCUniversal family.) Oprah Winfrey Reveals Why She Encouraged BFF Gayle King to Join the Blue Origin Space Flight

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have been best friends for decades, and they've championed one another throughout it all. So, of course, it's no surprise that Winfrey supported King today at the long-awaited Blue Origin Space Flight. 'We've been friends for… it'll be 50 years next year; we became friends when we were 21, 22, and I've never been more proud of my friend than today,' Winfrey told WCNC. More from SheKnows Katy Perry Shared This Telling Moment During the Blue Origin Space Flight & the Internet Has Thoughts Winfrey then explained that this milestone was more than King checking an accomplishment from her bucket list; it's about her facing her fears. 'This is bigger than going to space,' Winfrey said. 'Anytime we're on a flight, she's in anybody's lap if there's any bit of turbulence, has real, real anxiety flying and this is overcoming a wall of fear, a barrier. I think it's gonna be cathartic in so many ways for her.' In fact, it seems Winfrey was one of the people who encouraged the CBS Mornings host to take on the challenge in the first place. Why? 'Because I think life is about continuing to grow into the best of yourself, and the fullest expression of yourself and I think this is one of the fullest expressions you can possibly have,' Winfrey said. 'And I felt deeply that she would regret it and I didn't want to hear about it for the next 15 years, 'I wish I had gone!'' she joked. 'I said, 'There's only one time that all the women are going up for the first time. There'll be other trips, but they'll be only one first time. So, to be a pioneer is great.' As for what their last conversation was before the flight, Winfrey reminded King of her fate. 'I said, 'Peace be still, hold God's unchanging hand, he's got your back,'' Winfrey said. All in all, it seems Winfrey was thrilled to be there at the historic moment. 'Gayle has been there for me for hundreds of events, I can't even remember them, but you will never forget this day,' she said. 'None of us will ever forget this day.' During the flight, Winfrey was filmed getting visibly emotional looking at the spaceship take off, People reports. Luckily, the flight went well as predicted. Along with King, Katy Perry, Jeff Bezos' fiancée and journalist Lauren Sánchez, engineer and NASA veteran Aisha Bowe, activist and scientist Amanda Nguyen and movie producer Kerianne Flynn all made it back safely. Katy Perry Shared This Telling Moment During the Blue Origin Space Flight & the Internet Has Thoughts

If you weren't watching the Blue Origin Space Flight this morning, then you probably missed Katy Perry, Gayle King and others fly up into space and head back down right after. The trip may have been fast, but it made history as the first all-female space crew. Following her landing, the 'Roar' singer opened up about the journey and the telling moment she shared with her fellow space crew members up in the air. In an interview with Variety, Perry revealed she sang 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong when they were all airborne. More from SheKnows Gayle King's Pre-Launch Jitters Has Fans Nervous as Blue Origin Countdown Begins 'I've covered that song in the past,' she told the outlet. 'Obviously, my higher self is steering the ship. I had no clue I'd one day decide to sing a little bit of that in space.' Most of all, Perry wanted to make it clear that the moment was not about her and instead of appreciating the earth and mother nature. 'It's not about me. It's not about singing my song,' she said. 'It's about a collective energy and making space for future women. It's about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.' When she left the spaceship, Perry first held a daisy up in honor of her daughter, 4-year-old Daisy, whom she shares with partner Orlando Bloom, and kissed the ground next to her (see the video of the moment here!). 'We've been asking her to sing all the time and she wouldn't,' fellow crew member and CBS Mornings host Gayle King said. 'Everybody said, 'Sing 'Roar,' Sing 'Fireworks,'' and she said, 'It's not about me, I want to talk about the world.'' On the internet, users aren't exactly thrilled with Perry's sentiment. 'Rather have heard how it felt and was your perspective [difference] after going through it,' one user wrote on X. 'This sounds like a boring planned PR statement. Not real. Experience must not have been that impactful then.' 'Really? Kissing the ground?' another questioned on Instagram. 'The flight was 10 minutes.' 'Weirdos,' another echoed. 'This whole thing is weiiiiiiird and unnecessary.' In addition to Perry and King, the crew was composed of Jeff Bezos' fiancée and journalist Lauren Sánchez, engineer and NASA veteran Aisha Bowe, activist and scientist Amanda Nguyen and movie producer Kerianne Flynn. While the world might still not understand why the flight took place, it's safe to say Perry had a good time doing it. And the rest got a free concert. A win-win, right?Best of SheKnows Every Celebrity Who Put Their Own Spin on the Little Black Dress Trend 15 of the Most Controversial SNL Skits of All Time 54 Celebrities Who Died Tragically Young: Lucy Markovic, Michelle Trachtenberg, & More

Gayle King, Katy Perry And All-Woman Blue Origin Crew Successfully Complete 10-Minute Space Trip

An emotional Oprah Winfrey, with tears in her eyes, watched from the Blue Origin Launch Site One in West Texas as her old friend Gayle King blasted off at 9:30 a.m. ET as part of the rocket's first all-women crew. King, singer Katy Perry, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Kerianne Flynn and Lauren Sánchez took off and then, 10 minutes later, safely returned to earth. The event was covered live coast-to-coast on CBS Mornings. King and her fellow crew members launched their journey 62 miles above Earth's surface to the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The quick trip was the 11th human flight of Jeff Bezos' New Shepard program. Prior to liftoff, King told CBS Mornings, 'This is such an unlikely place for me to be, so I've just in my mind said, 'OK.' I feel well prepared for this moment after the training we had…but it still hasn't eased the fear that I have.' The capsule containing the women returned safely to earth, where it was greeted by invited onlookers including Winfrey. In addition to King and Perry, the crew included journalist and philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen. Bowe is the first Bahamian and Nguyen the first Vietnamese and Southeast Asian woman in space. King & Crew join 52 prior passengers of the New Shepard program.
