New bike rack awarded to Longmeadow elementary school

LONGMEADDOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Three out of 60 schools across the state were awarded a new bike rack as part of the MassDOT's safe routes to school program. Blueberry Hill Elementary School in Longmeadow was among the applicants who were awarded a grant to help acquire and install two to five bike racks to encourage its students and staff to ride their bikes. 'For students and staff who bike to get to school, a bike rack is just as essential as a traditional parking lot for those who drive,' said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. 'We are pleased to continue to promote safe bicycling with grant programs like this and congratulate this year's winners for their commitment to supporting school community members who walk, bike, and roll.' The schools that are partners with the safe routes to school program were encouraged to apply and the following three were awarded: Blueberry Hill Elementary School in Longmeadow Conte Community School in Pittsfield Jenkins Elementary School in Scituate This program serves more than 1,200 schools across the state that provides information, materials, and resources to promote safer routes for students to walk, bike, and roll to and from school.
