Malfunctioning thrill ride leaves riders stuck upside down at music festival
Festivalgoers at a major music event found themselves in a heart-stopping situation after a popular amusement ride suddenly shut down, leaving several people stranded upside down in the air. The incident happened early Thursday morning at Boardmasters, a surf and music festival held annually in Cornwall, England. According to video captured by attendees and a statement from the event's organizers, the Apollo 13 ride suffered a brief power failure around 1 a.m. Eyewitness video circulated on TikTok showing riders suspended high above the ground, unable to move for roughly 20 minutes. One TikTok user who filmed the scene called it 'mad,' while another joked about the wind potentially shifting the ride mid-suspension. Another user who claimed to be on the ride said 'it was just freezing cold.' The Apollo 13 ride, which travels to festivals and fairs across the UK, is named after NASA's ill-fated 1970 space mission, when an oxygen tank in the spacecraft's Service Module exploded. 3 Festival staff set up stages in the fields overlooking Watergate Bay ahead of Boardmasters Festival, which draws crowds of surf and music fans to Cornwall each summer on August 5, 2025. Facebook/Apollo 13 The attraction features a rotating arm and seats up to eight people, four on each end, swinging riders as high as 180 feet into the air. During the malfunction, up to four people were reportedly stuck in an inverted position. Despite the dramatic visuals, organizers insist that safety protocols worked exactly as intended. 'As a safety precaution, the ride automatically halted with people on board,' a Boardmasters spokesperson said in a statement to Fox News Digital. 'The ride operator immediately responded and safely assisted all guests from the ride within 20 minutes.' 3 Four people were stuck upside down during the ride's malfunction. TikTok/colsplace 'At no point were guests in any danger,' the statement continued. 'The ride has since undergone a full safety check and resumed normal operation.' The Apollo 13 ride launched in 2024, and its operators regularly post updates and behind-the-scenes maintenance work on its official Facebook page. A post from April outlined the rigorous checks performed before each event, including gear inspections, lighting fixes and greasing of pivot points. The four-day festival is set to conclude on Sunday, August 10.

Fans love singer Nelly Furtado's stunning new look
Nelly Furtado had heads turning with her leggy look during her performance at the Boardmasters Festival in the UK Saturday. The 'I'm Like a Bird' singer, 46, showed off her curves in metallic ruffled hot pants, a green halter top and embellished knee-high boots. She completed her eye-catching outfit with lime green, furry off-the-shoulder sleeves, silver chain necklaces, drop earrings and black sunglasses. Furtado shared video of herself interacting with fans during her performance on her Instagram Stories. She re-posted fellow singer Katy B who had duetted with her on-stage and wrote, 'They say don't meet your heroes but @nellyfurtado is the loveliest queen.' In January, Furtado addressed false rumours about her body while posing in an orange bikini on Instagram. 'This year I became aware of the aesthetic pressure of my work in a brand new way, while simultaneously I experienced new levels of self-love and genuine confidence from within,' she wrote. 'For whoever cares, I have never had any face or body surgeries or augmentation, besides for veneers on the top row of my teeth, quite recently,' she continued. 'So far, I have not had any face or lip injections or fillers of any kind.' Furtado urged her fans to 'express yourself freely, celebrate your individuality and know that it's perfectly OK to be OK with what you see in the mirror, and it's also OK to want something different.' 'HAVE A BODY NEUTRAL 2025, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, LOVE WITH EVERY INCH OF YOUR HEART,' she wrote. Furtado, who's Portuguese, previously claimed that magazines used to 'lighten' her skin and alter her body shape during the early days of her fame in the 2000s. 'I have olive skin, and they'd kind of lighten my skin a lot in photos and kind of take my hips down all the time — they would always cut off in editorials,' she told People in September 2024. She's also talked about taking a long hiatus from her career to raise her three children. She told NPR in September 2024 that she's now much more confident when she gets back into the studio. 'I just have a clear sense of detachment and boundaries, and I'm really able to kind of say, no, let's try this,' she explained. 'And I love kind of things that make me feel uncomfortable in the studio, like bringing perhaps two people together that I think might not get along, argue in the studio. I find that fun.'

Terrified festival-goers left hanging upside down for 20 minutes after fairground ride breaks down
A fairground ride at the Boardmasters Festival broke down leaving thrill-seekers hanging upside down for 20 minutes. Festival-goers were left clinging on for dear life after a fairground ride ground to a halt, leaving thrillseekers dangling upside down for 20 minutes. The Apollo 13 attraction - which hurls riders high into the air before flipping them over - suffered a terrifying malfunction on Friday night at the Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall, reports the Mirror. Stunned onlookers watched as the giant arm froze mid-swing, trapping riders at its highest point with their heads pointing towards the ground. Those stuck on the lower end of the swing were slowly evacuated, while others at the top were left hanging helplessly in the air. One witness shared the footage with the caption: "Apollo 13 broke, with people stuck at the top for 20 minutes." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Since being uploaded to TikTok on Friday night, the video has been circulated over 500 times. One viewer expressed their horror, commenting: "No, imagine being stuck up there and it starts to move because of the wind.", reports Cornwall Live. It comes after a woman travels 8 hours for wedding only to be told to leave for not reading invite 'small print'. Another remarked: "I saw this happen from my house and I thought the ride was shut.", while a third revealed: "I was stuck up there." Boardmasters Festival organisers have been contacted for a statement regarding the incident. The drama comes after other fairground ride horror stories including that of Jade Harrison, 27, who said she was 'lucky to be alive' after she was flung from a faulty ride at 60mph. Jade was at Hull Fair in 2019 when she reluctantly boarded the Airmaxx 360 after pals persuaded her. Just 90 seconds in, she heard a loud click from her seat clamp and then moments later, she was catapulted through the air. She told the Manchester Evening News: "I wasn't planning on going on any rides. But my friend wanted to go on the Airmaxx 360. I didn't want to be left on my own." Just 90 seconds after boarding the ride - which can spin up to 60mph and spins intensely - Jade said she heard a concerning click coming from her seat clamp. After initially disregarding the noise, her friend said they had heard the same click, although it didn't raise alarm bells, and she "didn't really panic". Before long, she was catapulted from the ride and into another, then falling to the ground and losing consciousness. She said: "All I remember is the feeling of flipping like you do in a dream when you wake up startled. "When I came to I was laid on the floor next to the ride but everyone was just around me and I was a bit confused. I kind of forgot where I was and what I was doing so it took me a minute to realise what had happened. Then obviously I started panicking and everyone was telling me to calm down. It felt like ages for the paramedics to get there but in reality it was only about two minutes." "I'm lucky to be alive. The most painful part was my chest. I couldn't sit up or take a deep breath. When I got home, I couldn't get out of bed without my partner's help." Following the ordeal, Jade received a significant five-figure compensation from Taylor's Funfairs, the company that runs the ride, which admitted fault in the incident. The Health and Safety Executive shelved a criminal inquiry into the incident in 2023.
