Veterans Connect Event Brings Free Essential Services for Veterans All in One Place
Swords to Plowshares invites veterans across the Bay Area to access a variety of resources aimed at lowering barriers to stable housing, employment, healthcare, legal aid, and more. San Francisco, CA, July 23, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, hundreds of veterans are expected to visit the Veterans War Memorial Building in San Francisco for Veterans Connect: a one-stop event offering Bay Area veterans access to a variety of free and essential resources. Organized by Swords to Plowshares and sponsored by the Bob Woodruff Foundation, the resource fair will bring together over 30 local service providers who are committed to supporting veterans facing homelessness, poverty, unemployment, and disabling health conditions. 'We aim to create a Bay Area where no veteran is left behind,' says Tramecia Garner, executive director of Swords to Plowshares. 'For 50 years, Swords has continually stepped up to address the unmet needs of generations of veterans. Thanks to the many partners showing up today to inform and support veterans, Veterans Connect allows us to go beyond our everyday services and offer a unique opportunity for veterans to experience the wide range of community-driven resources available to them.' Veterans Connect aims to reach veterans who may struggle with navigating social services. According to the 2024 Point-in-Time Counts, 587 veteran households experienced homelessness in San Francisco (7% of the total unhoused population), and 661 veteran households experienced homelessness in Alameda County (9% of the total unhoused population). A huge majority of these veterans experienced unsheltered homelessness – 81% in San Francisco, and 74% in Alameda County. 'New this year, we introduced our Community Engagement Grants to support local events organized by Got Your 6 Network partners and that bring veterans and military families together to foster connection and impact,' said Deirdre Armstrong, director of partner engagement at the Bob Woodruff Foundation. 'We're proud to support partners like Swords to Plowshares, who help connect veterans to local resources and who share our mission to ensure veterans, service members and their families have stable, successful futures.' Resources provided are free of charge and include onsite enrollment in housing services, job trainings, legal assistance, and healthcare; appointments with VA Mobile Medical Unit; haircuts and dental screenings; hygiene items and clothing; an e-bike give-away; counseling and mental health resources, including connection to service animals; and more. Shane Gillis, Druski Headline Eagles-Themed Sketch at 2025 ESPYS
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. On Wednesday night, some of the biggest names across all pro sports gathered for the 2025 ESPYS. Along with putting together a comedic showing as host, Shane Gillis also paid homage to the Philadelphia Eagles. Gillis, a native of Pennsylvania, is a known Eagles fan. He got to show his support on a grand stage at the ESPYS, teaming up with internet sensation Druski for a sketch. Over the past few years, the Eagles have perfected a secret weapon that has since been dubbed the "Tush Push." It is the offense's go-to on the goal line and in close-yardage situations. Even with opposing teams knowing the play is coming, the Eagles still have great success when they execute it. Gillis, who is playing a janitor, rallies the team around an idea he's been brewing. He then proceeds to explain the "Tush Push," which is met with some backlash from Druski. When the sketch wraps over, the broadcast cuts back to Gillis sitting in the crowd with Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. He seemed to have enjoyed the production and jokingly claimed that the staff came up with the play in a similar fashion. "Yeah, as a staff we did," Sirianni said regarding the creation of the Tush Push. "It was kind of exactly how you showed it right there." Ahead of taking on this huge role as host, Gillis opened up on his sports fandom in an interview with The Athletic. While looking back at the Eagles' run last year, he cited multiple instances as his favorite moments. Also read: Former Champion Rushes to Defense of Eagles Star Jalen Hurts "I was at the game when Saquon hurdled that guy. I saw it live, and that's the most incredible play I've ever seen," Gillis said. "I've watched football my whole life. I've never seen someone do that. That's insane. He had so many really incredible moments. The Super Bowl was wonderful. They just killed the Chiefs. At the beginning of the game, I remember there being a terrible pass interference call. And I was like, 'Oh, this is going to happen again.' And then they took the refs out of the game. Not much they could do." For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Bruce Springsteen's New Album Debuts Twice On The Same Charts
Bruce Springsteen scores multiple Billboard wins with Tracks II and Lost and Found, as both reach ... More the Top Album Sales and Americana/Folk Albums charts together. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 06: Bruce Springsteen performs onstage during the 17th Annual Stand Up For Heroes Benefit presented by Bob Woodruff Foundation and NY Comedy Festival at David Geffen Hall on November 06, 2023 in New York City. (Photo byfor Bob Woodruff Foundation) Bruce Springsteen's new box set Tracks II: The Lost Albums is so massive, it had to be released in several different variations. The project includes seven full-length albums that Springsteen recorded at various times throughout his career, but chose not to release for one reason or another. Given the volume of music, the release comes with a hefty price tag, but Springsteen wanted to ensure fans of all kinds could afford it. At the same time Tracks II dropped, the rocker also shared Lost and Found: Selections from the Lost Albums, a one-disc offering featuring just a handful of Springsteen's new cuts at a budget price. Amazingly, both of those brand new albums become charting wins in the U.S., even appearing near one another on some of the same tallies. Tracks II and Lost and Found Debut Together Both Tracks II and Lost and Found debut on the Top Album Sales and Top Americana/Folk Albums charts. Tracks II is the bigger winner between the two, opening at No. 7 on the rankings. Lost and Found launches at No. 16 on the Top Album Sales ranking and at No. 22 on Billboard's tally that focuses solely on Americana and folk music. A Box Set Worth Hundreds of Dollars Despite its price tag — Amazon is selling Tracks II for $260 on CD and more than $300 on vinyl — it emerges as the top performer between the two. Tracks II sold 10,400 copies in its first tracking period, according to Luminate. Lost and Found, meanwhile, sold 5,900 copies — a little more than half as many as its larger companion. Bruce Springsteen's New Bestseller Lost and Found can only be located on the two rankings mentioned, while Tracks II opens on half a dozen lists. The box set appears lowest on the Billboard 200, coming in at No. 67. It also launches inside the top 20 on the Top Rock Albums, Vinyl Albums, and Top Rock & Alternative Albums charts, landing at Nos. 13, 14, and 15, respectively. Throughout the years, Springsteen has only sent five titles to the Americana/Folk Albums chart. 40% of all of those projects debuted this frame, as he earns his first new arrival in more than half a decade.

Bob and Lee Woodruff to headline The Norfolk Forum; discounted tickets available for military community
When ABC News journalist Bob Woodruff was critically injured by a roadside bomb while covering the war in Iraq in 2006, his life changed in an instant. But his recovery was not just a personal journey; it became the foundation for a mission that would change the lives of countless others. Together with his wife, Lee, Bob turned adversity into action, founding the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) to support injured service members, veterans and their families. Since its inception in 2006, BWF has grown into a national leader in addressing the complex needs of veterans returning from service. From mental health and traumatic brain injury (TBI) care to employment assistance and housing support, BWF ensures that service members don't just return home, but truly thrive in civilian life. This April, join Bob and Lee at the Norfolk Forum as they share stories from their bestselling memoir, In An Instant. Their story will captivate the audience and leave them with a new understanding of the fragility of life, the strength of family and friends, the bravery of the military and healthcare professionals who helped save his life and lessons on how to survive and overcome even the most tragic of circumstances. 'Bob and Lee Woodruff's story perfectly embodies The Norfolk Forum's mission to inspire, inform, and engage citizens,' The Norfolk Forum's Executive Director Maura Murchake told We Are The Mighty. 'Their courageous journey will shed light on the critical issues of injury recovery, caregiving, community support, and the sacrifices made by military families. Audience members will be reminded of the transformative power of love, resilience, the strength of the human spirit, and the power of storytelling to drive change.' Veterans and active duty service members are invited to the Forum for this incredible event on April 29, 2025, at 7:30 pm at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, VA. The promo code, 'PATRIOT,' is for military and veterans and it reduces the regular single ticket price of $60 (plus fees) to only $40, inclusive of fees. The promo code needs to be UNLOCKED prior to checkout (see graphic): For more information about The Norfolk Forum, visit Bob Woodruff's injury was a stark reminder of the risks faced by those who serve in the military. As he recovered, he and Lee quickly realized that while top-tier medical care was available for high-profile cases like his, many other injured veterans struggled to access similar resources. The couple knew they had to do something. Thus, the Bob Woodruff Foundation was born—driven by a deep commitment to 'ensuring our heroes have a successful transition back to their communities and their families.' With the backing of corporate partners, individual donors, and a network of nonprofits, the foundation set out to close the gaps in services for post-9/11 veterans. Today, it funds and supports programs that tackle some of the most pressing issues veterans face, from invisible wounds of war to financial instability. The Bob Woodruff Foundation takes a data-driven, results-oriented approach to its grantmaking, ensuring that every dollar donated is used effectively. The foundation focuses on three key areas: One of the most urgent challenges veterans face is the lingering impact of post-traumatic stress (PTS), depression, and TBIs. BWF partners with organizations that provide therapy, peer support and innovative treatments to help veterans recover and regain a sense of normalcy. BWF funds programs that use art therapy, equine therapy, and mindfulness training to help veterans cope with the psychological effects of war. It also supports initiatives that provide access to cutting-edge TBI treatment, ensuring that those with brain injuries receive the specialized care they need. Returning to civilian life can be overwhelming, especially for those who struggle with unemployment or homelessness. The foundation invests in job training, emergency financial assistance, and housing support to prevent veterans from falling through the cracks. A significant focus is placed on veterans experiencing homelessness — a crisis that disproportionately affects former service members. Through partnerships with local shelters and housing initiatives, the foundation provides safe, stable housing solutions to get veterans back on their feet. Many veterans leave the military with a wealth of skills, but transitioning those skills into the civilian workforce can be challenging. The Bob Woodruff Foundation funds programs that help veterans translate their military experience into meaningful careers, whether in business, technology or entrepreneurship. From resume workshops and interview coaching to corporate mentorship programs, the foundation ensures veterans are equipped to succeed in today's job market. The foundation does more than just provide financial support—it also works to raise public awareness about the unique challenges faced by service members. Through its 'Got Your 6' initiative, BWF helps break down misconceptions about veterans, showcasing their resilience and contributions to society. The foundation also collaborates with policymakers, employers, and healthcare professionals to ensure that veterans' needs remain a priority at all levels of government and business. Supporting the Bob Woodruff Foundation means making a tangible difference in the lives of veterans and their families. Whether through donations, corporate partnerships, or volunteering, there are countless ways to get involved. For those who want to contribute, visiting the foundation's website offers opportunities to donate, attend fundraising events, or support veteran-owned businesses. Every dollar goes toward programs that directly impact veterans in need. Bob and Lee Woodruff took a deeply personal experience and transformed it into a nationwide effort to support America's heroes. The foundation's impact is undeniable, changing thousands of lives through access to mental health services, career opportunities, and essential resources. As Bob Woodruff himself once said, 'We owe it to our veterans to ensure they come home not just to survive, but to thrive.' Thanks to the Bob Woodruff Foundation, that mission is being carried out every day—one veteran at a time. For more information or to get involved, visit .
